Because the track season takes place (currently at least) over the Northen Hemisphere's winter. There is talk of moving it to the summer mind. Because it's (typically) indoors, track cycling lends itself to being a winter sport;)

Busy day for Mr Irvine today, with qualification for the pursuit underway this morning. He needs a top 4 place to get into a medal race this evening - if he makes it he'll then have to do the scratch shortly after

  • Administrators, Social & Fun Moderators, Sports Moderators Posts: 78,456 Admin ✭✭✭✭✭Beasty

Irvine is actually ranked third meaning he rides in the penultimate heat. However a number of teams have sent younger riders for the experience and their ranking may be a bit misleading because they have not done events at this level before - one of the early guys beat Martyn's PB which probably means he's going to have to improve it again to qualify

Martyn Irvine in first place with 2 to go - broken his PB by 2 and a half seconds. Guaranteed a medal race - Phenominal !!!

Qualifies 2nd - guaranteed at least a silver medal - up against Aussie Michael Hepburn in tonight's final. Fantastic result!!

4.45 I think, and dependent on the finish of the women's TT - hopefully live on BBC 2

EDIT - then he has to do the scratch race just over half an hour later!

What a ride! I didnt want to say it but I had the targets for each rider and he has achieved his! Delighted

Bit of a quandry for Martyn - does he give it a go against the current World champion, who was nearly 2s faster this morning (and over 5s faster in last year's Worlds), or does he try and save something for the scratch race, where he probably has as good a chance as anyone given his current form? The heart says go for it, but the head says he should hold something back - even then he has very little time to recover for the scratch race

There is no choice to make. How could you give it anything other than all you have got in a world championship final? There is no respectable way of riding the race that will make a significant difference to the scratch race anyway.

Au contraire Rodders - I just think he has a good chance in the scratch race, although knowing him as I do I suspect he'll go all-out in the pursuit anyway. However if he's a second or so down after a couple of km it may make sense to ease off a little - he will have virtually no preparation time for the scratch as the medal ceremony takes place between the 2 races

I see where you're coming from Beasty but I don't think he can do anything other than give it all from the off :)

Irvine takes Silver - first Irishman to get a World track medal since morana was racing Harry Reynolds in 1896

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 8,154 ✭✭✭buffalo

    Like this factoid:
Ireland's Martyn Irvine is already guaranteed to be the first Irishman to win a world track cycling medal since Harry Reynolds in Copenhagen in 1896

    edit: Beaten to it!

F'kin UCI have not made the live feed on YouTube available, here. And I'd just sat down with a cup of tea.

in fairness to Beasty I think he did ease off once his chance was gone. Scratch race should be fun. It's like an omnium day for him.

Why wouldn't he ease off though. Anyone with a race in 30 minutes is going to recover as much as possible.

It was the sensible thing to do once it was clear he couldn't win alright.

he asked for a bigger gear after the pursuit. he said he would give it a right good lash!I hope the sports council are watching

What a move! You could see he was keen for the break, always staying in the front 4 or 5. I recon he saw that they were about to lap a big group of back markers and used them to hide from the chasers. Thought it would be silver when the Austrian got him but he held the sprint line and forced the Austrian the long way round. Amazing!!!
