Switching to Three - things to know.
Keep your number & your phone - You can keep your old number and your existing phone when you move to SIM only
Network checker - It's best to check your phone will work on our Three network. Simply free text "Check" to 50100
Unlock your phone - If you bought your phone from another network, you might need to get it "unlocked" before you can use it with a Three SIM. To do this you'll need to get in touch with your old network and ask them (nicely) for an unlock code so you can use it on Three..

I think this is hilarious, Three asking people to be nice to get their phones unlocked from other networks, so that they could move to Three.

Simple rule don't move to Three, they are consistently ranked as the network with the worst customer service and worst coverage, fancy a new iPhone? well you better make do with 2G Edge cause their network ain't worth a fiddlers.

@Stinicker agree with you on their customer service, although their boards.ie reps have been helpful.

I've been with three for years. Never have much problem. Granted I spend most my time in Kildare Dublin but I always have great signal and 3G. And never go over my bill. It works for some people.

Never had a problem with 3 the past year. Even when I occasionally travel home to ballygobackwards, the service is grand.

3 have a bizarre business model, they've never made a penny in Ireland they consistently operate at a loss, but don't seem to care.

With Three I get free texts and calls to all other Three customers, free text to all networks, free calls to all networks on weekends, and unlimited internet. For how much? €20 a month prepay. Methinks I'll be sticking with them for a while longer.

I would assume that the (nicely) was a joke, but then again, why should any one have to deal with a rude customer?

Been with three for three years.

Not one problem with them. EVER.

You people didn't get the pun, Three never unlock their phones (it doesn't matter how nicely you talk to them or whatever be your situation), but they've the audacity to ask people to get their phones unlocked from other network.

Three unlocked my iPhone when I was released from contract but it took an order from the Small Claims Court for them to both release me from contract and unlock my phone. They really are the single worst shower I have dealth with in my entire life.

I don't get it, if you move to Vodafone/O2/eMobile etc I'm sure they will ask the same thing, they won't unlock another networks phone.

Slightly off topic but ..... do any of you reckon Three are taking over from Meteor as top provider in Ireland ?

Really can't be arsed to switch network when I get my next phone.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,157 ✭✭✭srsly78

This is hilarious. 3 reps on this forum have officially stated that phones not provided by 3 are not supported!

Phones from other networks may not have compatible software, leading to the dreaded 3g switching problem, leading to more irate customers posting here.

Meteor aren't anywhere close to being the top provider in Ireland, customer wise it goes vodafone>o2>meteor/emobile>three

ummm yeah would you prefer people rang up and screamed at the support of their soon to be ex network demanding for an unlock code?

    spread some joy OP

plus been with three for a while now, had no issues. yes they have an indian call center and i know that puts people off but any occasion i've had to deal with them i've not had any bother.

I'm pretty sure my old Europa got unlocked....

I'll use it as a tester later on and see what happens

If you ask Three nicely to unlock your phone you'll be told where to go fairly lively by the Indian call centre guy.

Sure weren't Three gluing sim cards into phones at one stage and outright refusing to unlock phones no matter how much credit you spent with them?

I don't think you guys are reading the post's properly, I'm not asking people to be rude. My point is Three don't unlock phones of their customers, but they are asking people to get their phones unlocked from other networks, so that they can be used on 3 Network.

3 don't have edge or GPRS, it 3G or nothing. It's one of the reasons I wouldn't use them as you could easily be left without any data connection.

If you live in a city though where you are more or less guarenteed 3G and don't move around much they have quite good value plans especially for the iPhone 5.

I doubt any network will commit to supporting phones not provided by them, people could turn up with any random phone running any type of software and expect them to fix stuff. It's unreasonable to expect 3, or any other network, to commit to that.

This isn't a problem on other networks. You can buy sim-free phones that will work properly on all network EXCEPT for 3. It's only 3 that have a non-standard setup.

They have known about this for over 3 years and make no effort to fix it.

They have a deal with Vodafone, if you are out of coverage for 3 your phone switches onto Vodafone's network and if your phone supports it will use 2G/Edge/GPRS there.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,157 ✭✭✭srsly78

And then it won't switch back to 3g afterwards... this is the problem. Domestic roaming is a non-standard setup.

Are these phones 2G only or something? I've bought sim-free phones that have worked fine on 3.

Nope they are normal modern phones. Hilariously even official 3 phones have the same problem sometimes after an update - they even **** up their own software. The 3 forum is littered with complaints about this issue.

People have even used it as a basis of complaint to ComReg, and been released from contract.

Exactly my point, O2 unlocked my(missus) iPhone when I told them I was travelling abroad within the 6 months of the contract, but Three told me they can't unlock the phone as long as I'm in the contract or I can pay the full price of the contract to get it unlocked even though I wasn't moving the network or cancelling the contract, I just wanted to use the Phone when abroad.

maybe if you were more detailed in your OP OP.

ya know background as to how you thought this was funny instead of just bolding a part of the press release/ad and assuming that we all know exactly what you are talking about.

Like people like me who have had a grand total of 0 issues?

pay for voicemail? who uses voicemail? plus i think with the 11gb of data used this month for 20 quid kinda balances it out

eMobile 34.50 per month: Unlimited calls to all networks and landlines 24/7/365, unlimited texts to all networks and 15Gb of data. Also got an iPhone 4S at half the price you would pay on pay as you go.

It is because you still have the 20euro credit to spend on other calls. I also get a 10er free with all that when I top up and 3 is the only network that works where I live.

Really? I find that hard to believe. Do you have any figures or sources because after a quick search I've found nothing.

But you don't get anything until you hand over €20 ;)
