Eirigí Showing How to Wreck a Water Meter

The splinter group from SF have put a vid on Youtube demonstrating how to sabotage a water meter.

I'm not going to link or post the video (unless a mod says otherwise) because I don't want to get boards.ie into hot water, but it does raise some issues.

I think this is an absolutely insane thing to do. It's inciting people to destroy taxpayer property. It won't change the policy - it'll just get naive people prosecuted and cost the taxpayer (that's us by the way, not na sasanaigh) money to boot. That's before you even consider that people will do this incorrectly end end up cutting off their water supplies.

Is there any reason this could possibly be a good idea?

So long as they show how to do it correctly, good luck to them.

But those water meters cost over €300!

(Phil Hogan's friend's company buys them from China for €10 each and sells them for Irish Water for €150 and they double the cost again)

    Absolute scum thing to do

It was so much easier to blame it on Them. It was bleakly depressing to think that They were Us. If it was Them, then nothing was anyone's fault. If it was us, what did that make Me? After all, I'm one of Us. I must be. I've certainly never thought of myself as one of Them. No one ever thinks of themselves as one of Them. We're always one of Us. It's Them that do the bad things.

As someone whose family have been on a local water scheme since before I was born (Im 30 now) and have been paying for every drop of it in our house and our farm for decades, its nice to see the likes of Eirigí making a fuss for us these past dozen or so years....oh wait, no!!! They dont give two s**ts when we have to pay for our water which they claim is a neccesity, but heaven forbid they have to drop a cent for it......

Bunch of p***ks if you ask me.

The response from the representative of Eirigi is laughable in that article.

Anyone expect this to be a news story about a blunder manufacturing the meters?

As in: How to wreck a water meter... get it wet.

    I'm deeply disappointed.

Republicans showing their true colours once again.

Firstly, this is hardly the biggest crime in the world and it's one that will probably get support from a lot of angry and financially stretched people. So "showing their true colours" is probably a bit dramatic.

Secondly, I had no idea that video was endorsed by Sinn Fein, Fianna Fail, Fine Gael, IRSP and a whole host of unaligned republicans. What's that? It wasn't? So what you really meant to write was eirigi showing their true colours once again. I see.

    Simple mistake

That is such a weak argument.
You could at least define your scale for us.
For example, would you put vandalism is at the zero point on the scale of crime and, oh lets say genocide is at the ten end of the scale. I assume tax evision comes in at one or two on the scale.
Anything at three and under is grand, acceptable cos it's not as bad as an eight, nine or ten.

Seems to be the case round here a lot, this attitude of sure whats the harm in me breaking that law when there are others doing much worse stuff than me.

Like you said using a scale here would go something along the lines of, ah sure its ok for me to rob someones house because there was a lad in court yesterday found guilty for murder.

Who said acceptable? Where did I voice support for this?
    Nowhere.
I was pointing out that the post I had referenced was inaccurate and over dramatic. "Republicans showing their true colours."
Setting aside the fact that eirigi do not speak for all republicans, this post is still ridiculous.
yeah, the whole demand for a free and equal Ireland was a smokescreen for our true desire which is to damage water meters.

As has often been said, with them in charge we'd end up with a 32 county Northern Ireland instead.

I nice surpise on the bill for the cost of a new one and the work to install.

Something similar to what the Parisians did when they tried to bring in clamping there. Superglue the lock rendering the clamp useless.

It's probably on a different scale in this case but I can't help thinking how the French effectively are lauded for what they do in revolt of something with which they disagree...however if the same was to happen in Ireland there would be outrage.

Maybe someone can clear it up for me. If enough people were to do this rendering the stopcock chambers useless would there be incentive enough to repair or replace the chambers or would the cost be too large and if it was too large is that the ned of water metering? I can't help thinking that no matter how many people blocked the chambers with cement the government would press on with implementing water charges. A new source of continued revenue which is effectively irreversible once implemented would far outweigh the cost of repairs in the long run.

Eirigi are a bunch of scumbags. Always taking things to the extreme. The only thing wrecking your water meter will do, is get you in a bit of hot water, no pun intended.

A standard water meter is about €80, the new ones are RFID so they can be read by a van driving down the street, maybe not €300 but definitely €200 or so.

Water meters will probably rust solid within a few weeks anyway. No need to mess with them.

While I'm all for the truckload of cabbages or whatever to keep the entrenched powers on their toes, how does making 100% certain you can't get your car back help fight clamping? Hope they run out of clamps?

I commented on the fallibality of the argument used. Thats why I selectivly quoted you, because I was only talking about the use of that quote as an argueing point. I did not make comment on anything else you said.

However, as you asked, your use of "It's hardly the worst crime in the world" is an implied acceptence of the stance being taken by those promoting the damage to meters.

Your grand to go ahead and drink all the sea water or stuff you collect in a bucket from rain you like for free you know. The stuff that comes from the tap costs money to get it there though.

They just go for a flat rate water bill. At least with a meter you can theoretically reduce your bill, with flat rate it'll only go up.

Could you be charged with criminal damage for sabotaging the meter?
