What is the process of cutting off electricity supply ? I always assumed they cn do it by flicking a switch at HQ... On reading their last warning letter with date of the big bad cutter men, it said not opening door is an offence or something similar ( ripped it up). Do they need to get in house to cut it off ? They read meter outside with all the other apartments meters so they could cut it there right ?

Well if they do cut it off, your nuts will be freezing for sure.

They'll come with the local sheriff if you don't let them in.

And of course as you all know it's legal to shoot a sheriff but the debate around shooting a deputy still rages on.

They usually just remove the service fuse which is beside the meter.

They flick a switch to cut you off. Then upon further continued non payment they will pursue you with every legal means possible. This may include selling your debt to a debt collection agency who will then make regular visits to your door seeking payment, before they too will pursue you through the courts.

You'll be forced to pay eventually OP.

What are you planning on doing for power whenever they cut off? Reconnection fee is very high.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 5,377 ✭✭✭zenno

Come to an agreement with them that you will pay them €5 a month, at least you are proving that you are at least trying to pay them something.

They could try but i refuse to pay due to a supposed resolved issue going back a few years when i was overcharged for 2 years.

So it is fact they don't need to get in apartment to cut power ?

They need access to the box.

I've seen whole apartment blocks being cut off when ruffians set fire to the box in the basement.

So yeah, anyone could I suppose.

Doesn't change the fact that yours will be shortly and in the official, legal manner.

You should take people's advice I think and swallow your pride.

Start talking to them about paying the bill off in installments instead of some imagined stand-off where you don't let them in.

Yes but covering all options, the CWO will not help leaving charity option as last resort imo. Just trying to cover all angles.

"We run the gas off the electricity and the electricity off the gas and we save two hundred pounds a year, but then a few weeks later ah god, I'll never forget it now, we got a new boiler..."

Anyway if you get cut off you'll have to pay a reconnect fee

They can't flick a switch at HQ they have to come into your house to remove the fuse or else removing the wire going into your house altogether

You can always try to bribe the guys who come in to do a purposefully shoddy job resealing the fuse box

see the Social Welfare people if you are genuinely unable to pay....

You may be under the misguided impression OP that you have any legal recourse once your bill is left unpaid. The fact is as has been mentioned previously that it doesn't take much effort for the utility company to cut you off for non payment, at which point a reconnection fee will be required and your account cleared before your electricity will be turned back on.

Attempting to switch to another provider will also prove difficult because they have all become wise to this sort of behaviour and will refuse you an account very quickly.

Your only real course of action left open to you is to clear your account and THEN pursue a dispute action with the provider. They will not listen to your claims otherwise and neither will any court.

If he had money to pay bribes, he probably wouldn't be posting this in the first place.

Apartment buildings have a switch room for utilities such as electricity supply and cable tv that feeds each apartment in the block. They only need access to this room and not specifically to your apartment.

Know a guy who works for esb and has to perform cut offs - they don't need to get in.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,196 ✭✭✭yellowlabrador

If you claim benefits you could as for the householdbudget package and they will deduct some of your arrears and also pay towards your next bill. They will deduct the money at source or else get a prepay meter installed and pay your arrears off a couple of euros at a time.

Ok so now i'm sure they don't need to enter apartment, seemed the likely scenario. If only laptop batteries lasted longer so i could spend day in library powering it up and get my hands on a camp stove.

Just pay under protest and chase them for whatever you feel they owe you later.

the internet connection i am sure would would cover the cost of the power , i would imagine - priority and all that.

also , i would suggest that if you start using a camp stove in a block of apartments your neighbours might want to kill you, as they are notorious for starting fires and also killing their users with fumes.

payment play , few bob a week , sorted , no need to be causing hassle of it

You'll be grand sure. "Acquire" a few solar panels and you won't have to bother with the library

No they don't. They physically cut off a section of the electric flow, ensuring it's too big for a spark to jump across or to be bridged with a coat-hanger. That's why they carry electric saws ...

Once they gain access to your building they will remove the service fuse for your apartment. No need to even let you know they were in.

So thinking you can pull a fast one is going to get you nowhere.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 9,992 ✭✭✭Degag

OP, call your supplier straight away and come to some arrangement. If you get disconnected you'll have to pay a large proportion if not all of the arrears up front and the reconnection charge also. Not to mention waiting a few days to do so. Wake up, because not letting the engineer into the house doesn't solve your problems.

Better off dealing with the ESB than a debt collector.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,987 ✭✭✭JDxtra

You will be cut off, and it is entirely your doing (or lack of). It's irrelevant whether you think they do / don't need access. Better off focusing your remaining energy (get it?) on coming to an arrangement with your supplier.

Debt collectors have no legal powers and can be ignored.

This is not the 20's in Chicago.

Have you a south facing window you can hang a decent sized panel out of?

No need to be struggling with camp stoves either. Just get an ordinary 4 burner gas hob from a skip or the buy n sell or one of those places and a drum of calor

Ask for a PAY AS YOU GO meter to be installed for free.

Each time you put 10 or 20 euro in credit onto the payment card and enter it into the meter...a percentege of the credit goes off the outstanding bill.

Very simple process and thesse meters are readily available from all utility suppliers (gass and leccy).

If you are in financial difficulty then talk to MABS and also the SVP too.

    Hope this helps.:)

Very few places sell the top ups, do you know if they can be bought online ? I can't find anywhere that says online payments top up.

Any shop with a payzone/paypoint outlet will sell top ups/credit.

This is what the gas PAY AS YOU GO meter looks like.

Its more or less the same for electricity.

For customers with a PAYG Meter.

    Your questions answered

Where can I buy my top ups?

Electric Ireland top ups can be purchased in any Payzone or PayPoint outlet.
