A new Voluntary Organisation has been set up in Wexford Town. Suicide in Wexford has increased hugely recently and especially involving the Bridge and Quays. For the first time ever all Emergency and Voluntary Services have come together. Wexford Civil Defence, An Garda Síochána, RNLI, HSE/NAS, Order of Malta, Wexford Local Authorities and Wexford Fire Service have all come together to put a new organisation into action.

Wexford MarineWatch’ was established in January 2013 primarily to try and combat a long epidemic of suicides off Wexford Bridge – one of the longest bridges in Ireland today.

Most of these individuals are not recovered in time and get swept away by the very strong tidal flows in the Harbour. This can result in drawn-out lengthy searches for weeks, with no sign of closure for the families affected. It is distressing for the Community, the rescuers and the families involved.

Wexford MarineWatch provides the Harbour area with ‘Safety Prevention Patrols’ – operated various nights a week by trained Volunteers. These members kindly volunteer their free time on a Rota-basis each month, to help save lives and make people aware of the dangers of the water. They also monitor life-saving equipment in the area ensuring all are intact and functioning correctly. Each Team has a Supervisor who is responsible for liaising with the Emergency Services including the Coast Guard.

Wexford MarineWatch is 100% funded by donations from (YOU) the public and the generosity of local Businesses. Without this support, the scheme cannot operate. Each volunteer requires a certain degree of Training, safety clothing / foul-weather clothing, in addition to Lifejackets, Radios, Searchlights, throw-bags, Insurance, storage etc., all which costs money.

Each member is asked to volunteer just ONE NIGHT of their time per month – usually from 10pm – 3am.
Volunteers work in several teams of THREE and are in constant contact with the Coast Guard & Gardai.

All successful applicants are required to undergo Garda vetting. They will also receive appropriate training to carry out their duties – such as First Aid, Suicide & Water awareness etc. These are official recognised courses and will also benefit members in their day-to-day life. Each volunteer will also be provided with Foul-weather clothing and safety equipment while on duty.
