Shock score 25-0 win for Ireland over World Champions England. With Ireland having beaten Wales last weekend and France having lost away to Italy they have a good chance of claiming a historic championship. Major strides being made in the last few years but this is still a massive surprise. Let's hope they can keep it going for the rest of the campaign.

Lets hope for the clean sweep tomorrow:D

Great win. To put it in perspective, that England womens team have only been beaten something like once in 5 championships

Great result for them. Presumably England were big favourites for this?
Clubs yesterday, Women's team today. Hopefully that trend continues tomorrow.

in fairness,as someone who follows womens rugby, england rightly or wrongly have decided to focus on winning the sevens world cup this year and so 17 front line players have moved from their 15 a side team to the seven a side team(and won last weeks houston sevens).
So while its a good ireland win and makes them favourites to win this year,it cant be forgotten its pretty much an England 2ndXV this year, not the same squad who beat NZ 3-0 last autumn.

yes,but it doesnt mean as much though does it? england are the best womens side at the moment. Ireland didnt beat that side, they beat the reserves. If you win something you always want to feel you are the best and have beaten the best-well i do anyway!

They dispatched a semi-pro England side that put 70 on their previous opposition. Nothing takes that away. Very few gave Ireland a chance. Well done and more of the same please.

Great win, well done to them.

BBC headline is "England thrashed by Ireland"

Delighted for all the girls but in particular for Fi Coughlan, Joy Neville & Briggsy who would have been the wrong end of similar scores against England. I remember being at the similar fixture 11 years ago when England trounced Ireland 79-0. This is a major turning point for Ireland, some great self belief in this team.

Big ups to the IRFU for streaming the game too.

And let me tell ya having played against some of those "second string" English girls there is nothing easy about them!!

Oh What was the score last weekend for England ?
They're still no matter what way you put it semi pro, which in our case the girls have jobs to do along with the usual training, Along with a few Gaa commitments you can't really compare the 2, I was up in St Marys a few years back we were basically beating them with 10 mins to go and they scored 2 trys to win in those 10 mins

I just compared the teams to last year. Very similar packs and I think two girls in the backs the same.

I think about 6/7 changes overall. Hard to say how many of them are down to the 7s and how many are down to form. I think a few of their girls who played in the backs (Scatmore and Richardson) are definitely because of the 7s. Don't know how many of the forwards were down there.

I'm absolutely delighted and I don't accept the 7s is the who,e difference between the sides.

    Well done Ireland!

The Irish ladies have the beating of the rest of the teams they are due to face.

If anyone has even a passing interest in womens rugby I would urge them to go out and support the girls in Ashbourne when France come to visit.

sorry to make the point as a couple on here trying to rubbish what i said-entire backline is different, both props different(they cant be playing sevens surely!),and 2 back rowers.
also throw in 2 of the best womens players in world rugby who were injured in autumn- full back danielle waterman and flanker maggie alphonsi who are with england sevens too-it is virtually a 2nd XV that the team beat today. So while a good win, lets not carried away as people on here usually do!

    Fair play to them.

Met the coach phillip doyle on a job this time last year. What a sound man. Yapped away to him for ages about the ireland team, the set up and where he thought the women's team was headed.

Yes but Ireland had new players this year too. I'm not trying to take away from your point but please can we not just be happy for the girls? I'm sure if the gods align tomorrow and we beat the English men we won't have people saying "ah but it was practically a second string side site tuilangi wasn't playing" or whatever - you beat the team that's in front of you and that is what the girls in green did today.

And I couldn't be more proud of them.

Maybe they should just doff caps and bow instead? What's the point in running women's 6n this year at all if England aren't going to field a full side, eh?

Rugby like most sports is a man's game as we know. However fair play to these women, they've obviously gotten over the Spain incident and progressed. I have to say that's admirable.

How dare you accuse me of being a sexist, I'm merely stating facts, you know as well as I do that Women's rugby is entirely irrelevant. That doesn't mean we can't support these girls. See you'll patronise them and I'll tell them the truth.

As a woman who plays rugby I don't find the sport in any way irrelevant.

And I believe you are sexist based on your opinion that the sport is irrelevant when it has such an up-and-coming profile in Ireland and the world.

All sport is entirely irrelevant. Pretending relevance is contingent on gender is sexist, unless you're using a completely different definition of the word.

I'm being truthful here not sexist, nobody really cares about the women teams. I heard there was a great ladies side out of Roscrea Club recently but nobody goes out to watch their games. That's sport, its male dominated and it always will be.

No, if it was a mans game only men would play it. Woman's rugby is hugely popular, nothing to do with money.

    Anyway I'm done.

Why the hell can't we just congratulate the team on a fantastic achievement without throwing in some crappy qualifying remark? Why is there a need for the negativity?

And if we're going to judge a sport based on popularity then every sport bar soccer might as well not bother as they're all just small time in comparison.

In conclusion, well done to the team on a fantastic achievement.
