    Just a rant!
    • To start off with I am not an overly emotional person especially with people I wouldn't be familiar with.
    • I do have a somewhat stressful job but I never let it get to me and I have clear boundaries!
    • I do not run to the doctor with any kind of illness, touch wood the only illness that I ever really get that requires me to attend the doctor is tonsillitis and at that I know when I can get over it myself and when I will need an antibiotic!

Ok woke up Tuesday morning not feeling great! I had a chesty cough and every bone in my body ached, had a headache and felt dizzy. No Appetite at all.
I Called work and told them that I wasn't feeling 100%, would work from home catching up on admin work etc and that I would be available on email!

So that was my Tuesday morning, cough was really annoying me so at about midday so took some codinex and off to sleep for an hour or so only to be woke up about an hour or so later with Violent pains in my stomach (not kidding but they were like labor pains, they used to come every ten mins and last for about 2 mins).
I knew they were somehow connected to my chest and how I had been feeling all morning ( don't ask but I could just feel it as if there was crap from my chest going into my stomach)

They really scared me so I made an appointment to see my GP, at the GP that I attend there is 4 doctors and I usually don't specify which one I want to see, I don't have a relationship built up with anyone of them so never mind.
Anyway I saw the GP who owns the practice and who has been my family doctor for over 30 years (all my life)!

I told him what had happened that morning, now in fairness to him I said I was more concerned about the stomach pains, but he was really sarcastic, kept asking was I stressed at work, anything going on in my personal life etc etc...

I said to him the pains that I had were real and had to be something to do with my chest, he replied you have common cold! I said it feels like more than that to me!
He started typing and then printed out a letter, I asked what was this? Referrral to A & E...
I said I don't think this requires A & E, I think it has something to do with my chest, again he told me I had a common cold and kept referring back to stress, something in my personal life etc etc, he alluded to anti depressants being available if I wanted them, I told him it was very real and that my chest was very sore and I felt sick also...
He again told me that I had a common cold, at this stage I got emotional so he prescribed me buscopan for the stomach spasms but didn't examine my chest, take my temperature etc...
I said I had taken codinex this morning was that ok and he said if he keeps your cold at bay go ahead...
I was about to leave and I asked him for a doctors cert to give to work, technically I didn't need one but I thought when I was at the doctors I might as well. he then actually sniggered as if to say so this is why you are really here..
At this stage I was an emotional wreck! He didn't fill out the cert for me but signed one and sent me out to a packed waiting room to get it filled out there with two big red eyes from crying!
I went to the chemist to get the buscopan in case I did have any more stomach pains and I also asked for a bottle of codinex.
The pharmacist pointed out to me that the codinex especially on an empty stomach could be causing stomach spasms, was that the reason I was prescribed Buscopan? Wouldn't I have been nice going to A & E ?

So home I went, I was an emotional wreck, It was sicker I got, took my own temperature which was 39.
I spent the rest of the week up until this morning on the couch, coughing, sweating, dizzy, pains everywhere, my chest was so blocked up I could hardly breathe... I have not gone to bed since Monday night as no way could I lie flat down.

I had enough this morning so I made an appointment to go back to see doctor, a different one this time, when I walked in the door this morning he was standing beside reception, he really had a worried look on his face when he saw me and came up and asked me was I ok, I said no not really (can barely speak at this stage) and he said have you made an appointment, I became really emotional again (which is so unlike me but he really got to me on Tuesday) and told him I had and walked into waiting room before I started crying again. I wasn't going explaining that I had specifically requested another doctor.

When I was called he and the other doctor were clearly discussing me in the hallway! And if I was a mind reader it was my "mental state" etc that he was referring to...When I sat down with the doctor I had an appointment with she said have you stomach pains again, I really kept my emotions together and explained that where I was concerned about stomach pains on Tuesday I always believed that my chest was the primary issue and I told her about the pharmacist diagnosis re the codinex and she agreed.
I told her how I was feeling all week and she examined me, I had a high temp, swollen glands and a chest infection! She was so nice and understanding.

I didn't go into how the other doctor had treated me, as I would not have been able to keep my emotions in tact and anyway he owns the practice! She prescribed me antibiotics which I am sure are having an effect already and exputex for my chest.

Just needed to get that rant off my chest!! Thank god I don't suffer from stress/depression etc but I know one thing for sure that if I went into this surgery on Tuesday with stress or depression I would have come out a whole lot worse!

I wouldn't have taken the A&E referral letter. Then the hospital can phone him up and say "Why the **** are you sending people with chest infections into us, you idiot?"

Don't go back to that doctor's surgery OP. Find someone else.

I need a doctor after reading that........you disagreed with his diagnosis so he suggested and facilitated you going to a and e for further checks and you broke down???? why? also if you did not require a cert why did you feel the need to ask for one... your work does not require one after 1 days absence .

I was going to go to the doctor to get my knee looked at, but then I took an arrow to my other knee.

Doesn't take much to upset you if one doctors visit made you cry, no wonder he asked about your stress etc.

I'd say she broke down because she was very unwell and had a temperature. Jaysis, you're all very unsympathetic.

    Summary.

OP was unwell. OP went to see Dr. Acula. Dr. Acula was a snidey inconsiderate cunt and didn't take OP's complaints seriously. OP was upset. Dr. Acula suggested mental instability/ anti-depressants. OP even more upset. OP went away feeling ill and upset.

OP returned to practice a few days later even worse and requests different doc. OP sees Dr. Acula discussing her with other doctor and believes he was suggesting OP had emotional issues. OP sees Dr. Nicewoman. Dr. Nicewoman examins OP and confirms physical issues. Dr. Nicewoman is very nice to OP and OP goes away vindicated.

Ah no, do format it please. I know the world probably won't have written text in a few years, but until then it would be nice to read something that does not come across as a stream of conciousness.

As for the first Doctor; you should write a letter of complaint to the managing partners of the Practice. I know he is obviously one of them, but a bit of tut- tutting from his immediate colleagues might make him squirm and think twice next time about writing off the chronic symptoms of a physically ill, but mentally well, person.

The letter likely won't do much, but it will give you some satisfaction and you will probably get an apology. Relatively speaking, there is little point approaching an external body over something minor, albeit important to you.

If the Practice allows for it, you should register specifically with the Doctor of your choice and avoid any awkward encounters in the future.

My dad was building a wall for a neighbour years ago who was a doctor. The doctor was out watching him as he was finishing on Friday evening, pointing up the blocks.

'Sure it doesn't have to be prefect, the plasterer hides your mistakes', the doctor says to him, half condescendingly.

'And the undertaker hides yours' my Dad replied back.

If you're feeling like shíte, and used up pretty much all the energy you had to get to the doctors, having the doctor treat you half arsedly ( as you see it) and not listen to what you are saying is enough to make someone upset.

Some doctors can be assholes, with no empathy for patients and make you feel like a fukin tool. I've had it happen to myself and I've also seen it on clinical placement. (I also know that some patients totally take the píss with doctors visits but the OP stated he didn't even examine his/her chest or temp??)

I think this is what happened.

Girl goes to doctor, doctor said she had a cold. Girl said no and started crying. Doctor told her to go to the hospital. Girl refused.

Girl goes back and sees another doctor.new Doctor is more sympathetic and gives girl antibiotics. Girl is satisfied with the diagnoses.

    They end!

Surely any good doctor, when confronted with an obviously overwhelmed patient, is going to ask about stress?

And after asking her about stress she got more emotional? Isn't that a red flag for anxiety and stress?

I think this story was a two way street and not a simple case of the doctor not listening. I think he was doing the right thing alerting the other doctor to the possiblity of his patient being stressed. He'd be wrong not to.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 35,954 ✭✭✭✭Larianne

The OP went to the doctor, with a really bad cold. Doctor told the OP it was a common cold, OP didn't really listen to the doctor and went on about the pains in his/her stomach. OP thought the stomach pains were related to the chest. Doctor said again chest problem was a common cold. Doctor was trying to find out (possibly) was stress causing the stomach pains (could have been an ulcer etc.) and because the OP wasn't particularly paying attention to what the doctor was saying, the doctor started writing a referral to A&E to shut up the OP.

Doctor could have went about it a different way if the patient seemed stressed. At least checking the OPs chest and temp etc.

It could be possible that the second doctor probably gave the prescription for antibiotics just to get rid of the patient.

It is also possible the doctors in that surgery how have an 'opinion' of you OP and I wouldn't go there again.

I'm getting really fed up with the "it's too long, I ain't reading it" crowd. You're only exposing yourselves as illiterate muppets tbh.

OP I have some sympathy for you- it's hard enough to haul yourself down to the Dr when you feel like death and for him to be so bloody dismissive when you're paying a small fortune for the privilege is beyond frustrating.

    Hope you feel better soon.

Except for the fact that the doctor seemed to be adding to the anxiety.
I mean surely a person goes to the doctor to get treatment for whatever is wrong with them. If the doctor does nothing but say it's "just a cold" and "it's all in your head".
I think if anybody went to the doctor with stomach pains and the doctor dismissed it as a cold, you would start to worry - you know yourself it's not just a cold and if the doctor is not willing to accept that it will only add to the worry and anxiety!

Having a chest infection means that you get hypersecretion of mucus in your lung tissue. If this was a serious chest infection or especially pneumonia. It would be measured on the CURB65 scale. If the patient was a 2 or higher on this scale, they potentially could be hypoxic which can lead to anxiety/stress. So get down off your horse horse especially when you don't know jack**** about chest infections. obligatory

And the OP didn't help things by saying it was stomach pains caused by her chest. And the fact she was very emotional would make any doctor ask about stress.

I'm not saying the doctor acted perfectly, but we only have a one sided histrionic account of the visit. I'm glad she got sorted in the end but I think they both could have handled it better.

Apologies to people who found the post hard to read, I was as I said ranting!!! changed it a small bit, hope that makes it easier!

    In response to some posters,

My issue wasn't agreeing or disagreeing with his diagnosis; rather him refusing to examine me for the any of the symptoms that I described to him and referring to me having mental rather than physical health issues.

I know at that stage I didn't require a cert for work but I thought it would be better to have one than not to have one, I got the impression from the doctor that he thought that this was the only reason I was here.

At no point was I been sent to A & E for a chest xray, I was been sent for abdominal pains that had sense gone and were the results of me taking codinex on an empty stomach. I really think he should have known this? But in my oppinion he was only giving this to appease me, he didn't believe there was anything wrong with me in the first place. Anyway been sent to A and E for something that can (and was this morning ) be treated in a GP surgery is a huge waste of resources!

Being so emotional is unlike me, I felt like crap and the doctor refused to examine me and instead referred to mental health, he wasn't even referring to a "common cold" as being the first issue just the pains in my stomach must be caused by stress/Mental health issues.

He never once examined me, that along with eluding to mental health issues and the availability of antidepressants are my issues.

I did not become emotional until he mentioned stress at least 5 times and blatantly refused to examine me.

I wasn't looking for sympathy I was looking for treatment, I was fairly sick all week, It's my first time taking an antibiotic in over
three years and they are working!
I think after paying €50 for a consultation and I think by just looking at me or listening to me trying to cough that crap out of my chest an examination was the least that I deserved but had to go back and part with another €50 for that!

Just one more thing, he kept saying I had a common cold, but I did not have a blocked runny nose and I kept pointing this out to him, it had however gone to my head by this morning!

Too much effort to read tbh. Are you still alive OP ?
Pipe down, did you see the way it was originally formatted??

No one wants to read a long post when the OP doesn't even use paragraphs.

Some people just don't want to read.

The doc didn't say it was all in her head though. It's what the OP inferred, not necessarily what was implied.

Pretty much this tbh. I go to my doctor when I feel there's something not right with me. I don't tell him how to do his job.

When my doctor has a problem with his computer he calls me. He doesn't tell me how to do my job.

    We get along just fine.

So why bother going to a doctor if you - and I'm assuming you have no such medical training or education - apparently know better?
