"Riegel Number"

I'm trying to come up with a generic formula that will allow me to compare runs with each other, regardless of distance. At the moment, I'm using a modified version of the Reigel formula, used in most pace calculators. My version: [latex]R = \frac{T}{D^{1.06}}[/latex], where T is the time (in minutes) and D is the distance (in km). A lower RN signifies a better run.

    So, for example:
    • a 10km run in 50 minutes would give an RN of 261.289
    • a similar effort would be 5km run in 23:59 (RN of 261.308)
    • a 10km run in 45 minutes would be 235.160

Anyone have any better comparison methods?

Are you talking about comparing training runs or races? If the latter, you can use the following (in order of usefulness (IMHO):
    IAAF Scoring Tables
    VDOT or Mcmillan

If you're referring to the former (training) there is little point in comparing training runs. In fact, it's likely counter-productive, as you may end up pushing yourself on each training run, in order to 'score' better than a previous run. If you want to establish progress, that's where races come into the equation. You could compare effort levels (for example by Heart rate, or by Garmin Training Effect, or Polar Training load if you have a supported watch), which would allow you to make comparisons over similar style runs, but it's a little subjective (as you may be less tired one day, etc).

IAAF are great (especially to compare male/female) but they don't have some distances like 4M so I use vdot, age graded and IAAF for race times. Also for a beginner they might not even register on the IAAF table with their race time but will for Vdot and age graded.

VDot looks pretty good, thanks. I'm largely doing it because I like tracking and graphs :) Wouldn't be worried about a better score on a particular run, more looking at it for overall trends.
