Link would be appreciated. Can't find it, but I can find Kings Mountain 200 in Sequoia California - presume that's not it.

I'm still vaccillating. I'm planning on a super randonneur series this year but have yet to get in a spin longer than the commute...

Welcome to my world, there is no harm in that. Looking nice and flat, Longest I have covered all year is 20km.

Yes indeedy. Been getting out regularly at the weekend, max 100km last week. Finally got turbo set up in the garage so been having a go at that for the last 3 weeks or so, interested to see if makes a noticeable difference. Looks like a nice route, and new territory for me so looking forward to it.
    Cheers, LG

Just have too decide to do it fixed or geared, how flat is flat? I have heard the word flat thrown about in a ficticious manner by Audax Ireland, it looks reasonable enough on mapmyride though.

Quote from POD: I rode the 200k on Monday to check the routesheet and can confirm that it's probably the easiest 200k that you'll ever ride. The roads are pan flat and once Dublin was cleared were pleasantly quiet.

    Hi there,

the website has pay by post and PayPal options plus an entry form.

Is it possible to turn up on the morning, pay up the entry fee and the cost of the one day licence?

    No worries if not.

The Brevet cards have to be prepared before hand so it's never been allowed with the exception of the Mick Byrne 200 that has such a high turnout that they allow registration on the day for a small bit extra.

For 5euro entry, though, it's worth a punt, you'll get the route sheet and notes, so if you can't make it you can always try it out yourself on another day (just without the card or recognition).

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 504 ✭✭✭LeftBlank

You would need to ask the organiser that - some allow entry on the line, some don't.

    Absolutely right.

Won't be doing it on a day like today though.:P

No entries on the line in this one anyway from the organisers mouth through an old e-mail I found, closing date for entries is the 18th Feb.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 27 pinpag

To all interested parties You can email a completed entry form and pay on the day if you do not have a PayPal a/c. Oneday licence available on the day ,I will post again after I clarify cost with Cycling Ireland.ps you do not have to be a member of Audax Ireland to take part but you need a licence (cycling Ireland rules)and Lights are mandatory.

Weather wise next week is forecast to be very cold. I have seen frost and ice mentioned on some weather sources.
Fingers crossed it will be ok.

I've decided to sign up for this after yesterday's ride. I'm hoping the legs will hold up for next weekend.

If the weather's crap maybe I'll try and do it on on the flat-barred hybrid with winter spiky tyres on, now that would be hardcore!

Thanks for the info. It swung it for me and I fired in an application by email this evening.

If it made it in on time I should be good to go for my 1st audax.

I am just afraid you will bring the people carrier again and then beat most of us up the Kings mountain like you did at the hill climb and I will be both impressed and humbled again.

Looks like it will be a nice crowd.

    No trailer this time! :D

This is not a race or a sportive as you well know! I'll try and do the first bit out of Dublin zippily enough but I think my average will be around 25kph.

You'll find me whimpering on the side of the road somewhere near Ashbourne as light is failing and I'll still have 30km to go!

I wouldn't worry about that - most of us will be in the same boat ! Can I remind everyone that unlike some Audax events this is a self-catering ride, so you'll need to bring your own grub, or buy along the way. What most people do is stop at the control towns where you need to get proof of passage (receipt etc) which in this event are Ballivor at 64km, and Kells at 127km. Of course if anyone wants to stop more often than that, feel free to do so.

So out of the loop with all these events..can someone do a small summary of what it is? :)

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 6,831 ✭✭✭ROK ON

    Forecast looking bad.
IrishWeatherOnline predicting snow on Sat & Sunday for Eastern Coastal areas with inland daytime lows of -7deg.
Yr.no predicting freezing temps for much of Sunday.
Accuweather forecasting freezing temps on Sunday.

If this comes to pass then I'm out. Will do Midleton 200 instead.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,440 ✭✭✭cdaly_

Plan is for sunday to be very cold (max maybe 4 or 5 Celsius), light to calm N/NE breezes. A very cold saturday night with frost which will likely persist. Probably no precipitation between now and then so frost rather than ice likely. Something of a risk of some slight drizzle (only maybe snowish) along the east coast probably not affecting the N2 or west of it.

May be a chance of a bit of fog about...

Thinking about giving this a go myself but don't know what to expect. Can anybody give me some insights?

The furthest i've cycled in just over 100k and that was last year for the Tour of Louth. This year the furthest is 70k with a few 60's and 50's aswell. I'm just not too sure that i'd cope with the distance. Would love to give it a go as i'm looking at it in 3 x 70k segments (Ballivor, Kells, Home) and since its probably the flatest 200 around.

Since its 200k, how does everbody cope with storage? I have a bike, lights and a saddlebag. Would i need anything else? Does everybody store their food in their pockets because its a short distance?

Sorry for all these questions. The other half said do it "cause whats the worst that can happen" (i.e don't finish). I'm willing to do it but just need somebody to push me/answer my doubts. It might be a stepping stone for future events.

I'll be attempting this as my first audax so unfortunately can't give you the benefit of experience, but I have done 150km solo in preparation. Before that 100km was about my max too. Pushing that out to 200 is, I think, very doable so long as you pace yourself and keep on top of nutrition and hydration. I paid a lot of attention to this on my 150km spin and I actually found it easier going than the 100k I had done where I didn't really think about 'fuel'.
There are no organized food stops on this event but there will be plenty of options and time to stop along the way. I'll probably fill my pockets with bananas, gels, fig rolls and snickers anyway. Eating every 30 mins and having a bit of variety breaks up the spin nicely I found.
Gear wise ill have the usual saddlebag contents and might bring a second spare tube if i can find room.
You may find yourself riding solo for some of the time as it is a good distance and the numbers participating wont be huge, but that's all part of the audax experience I'm told, which is partly why I'm interested!
There won't be a support vehicle but if you have a mechanical you've a good chance of someone coming along to help.
Good luck and see ya there

Assuming you could still register, you need a basic cycling computer that gives you distance travelled, as the route is supplied in the format of @35.5k turn left on r1234. Good idea to bring some money in case you want to stop for food / cup of coffee, and you'll need your mobile phone. You'd also want a pump, spare tubes, and basic toolkit, and your lights would want to be the type you can see with, rather than just be seen. You should have enough warm gear for a long cold day out.

I use a much larger saddlebag for long spins, for food, waterproofs, and the other items above.

I'm sorted for the bike gear. I take them out anyway for a normal cycle.

I was more worried about what you said about your larger saddlebag. Especially when you see some of the pictures  (bags everywhere). I think i would be more unprepared compared to everybody else who know what they are doing.

It is a long, an looks like cold, day in the saddle, but it not as is you are going through the tundra or the Sahara, at any given point you are probably no more than 70 miles from Dublin so not exactly in the middle or nowhere.

I am not an audaxer by any means, have done the W200 & Mick Byrne 200 in the past so that the experience I will be taking.

Bring along whatever foods, gels, etc that you think you will need forthe day. You can probably top up in the shops etc along the way but I always bring what I think I need and then I don't have to worry so much about the shops. Two large bottles, one with energy drink, one with water, and bring at least one packet of energy powder to refill the bottle. You will pass a shop/pub/house so you will be able to get water.

On the clothes front, you could pack for every eventuality, or plan based on the forecast and pray! I will be wrapping up warm, bringing a rain jacket but otherwise that is it. It's a risk if the weather turns I admit.

Lights of course. I will have two front (one to see with and one to be seen) and one for the rear. All batteries will be recharged the night before, but I will bring along some spare batteries in case. If you start at 8, you will get till 17.00 before you need the lights in all probability, so that is 9 hours. Your lights should be able to last for at least another 5 or 6 in case of problems etc.

Mobile phone is a must. You may need to call for assistance or just to get a taxi! At least two spare tubes. I am heading with two others so we will have between us six tubes. I might bring along a third just in case! Pump or course, a good one, check it works! Mini-tool at the least. The best way to avoid needing to use it is fully checking out the bike the day before. Check all the nuts & bolts, clean it to make sure you can spot any problems, check your indexing. Check your tyres for cut and wear. If they look worn probably better to change them. Tyre irons as well. I use my hands most of the time, but you never know when that damn tyre just won't budge and it's good to have them in case.

Many of the pictures you see or for guys used to doing 400/600 or even longer rides. 200 is a bit cycle but not in the same league in terms of logistics. Most important thing to bring is a positive attitude. Not matter what your level you will go through periods of hardship, and you you need to get through them. Pace yourself, try to enjoy a whole day out on the bike away from the normal every day stuff.

And prepare to become a legend (even if only in your own head!)

I've one of these I picked up in McDonalds in Rathgar, which I find great on longer solo spins. That said, you can get away with pockets, particularly in the cold where you'll be keeping most of your gear on most of the time. I'm always bringing more stuff than I need.

If paying entry fee on the day please have the correct amount E5.00 then E2.00 for a Oneday licence if you need one,and another E5.00 if you want a medal.Weather wise it will be brisk with pleasant sunny spells,so mind the toes and fingers and of course bring your rain jacket.
