XP ip conflict with another system, help :(

    hi all, I hope somebody can help me out here as i have never came across this problem before.

    I'm trying to use my xp laptop for first time on a new upc thomson router installed last weekend and I can connect to the network but not able to get browser working

    I no there are other threads regarding this subject but i really can't make head nor tail of them to be honest.

    turn off wireless for a few seconds and turn on

    reboot

    at a command prompt
    try
    ipconfig /release
    wait 30 seconds
    ipconfig /renew



    if you've entered a static address then change it

    ok so i've switched off the thomson router and turned it back on again, but before i done that i had a look at the WiFi protected setup wizard on the laptop, the only network it gave me the option of trying to connect to was "click here for porn" and when i selected it, it asked me for my network password so i stopped right there

    this has me right freaked out now

    so i did all that and when i tried to run the command it told me there was no device available or something to that effect, had to turn off the laptop as it's effecting the wireless and i couldn't surf with my mac while it was on

    Sounds to me like the xp laptop is full of malware.
    Download malware bytes into a USB using your Mac and run it on the laptop.

    It sounds like you've got another working computer, so what I'd suggest is:
    • connect to the router admin interface from the Mac, and assing your XP laptop an IP address (see here to find the manual - usually this is something like "Go to http://192.168.0.1, log in as admin user, go to LAN Configuration, and set an IP address for your laptop's MAC address).
    • Boot into the XP laptop and assign a static IP address (see here for step-by-step guidance).
    • Check if network connectivity works
    • Run through more checks to see if the laptop has an infection of some sort - for starters, I'd use the System File Checker (open command prompt with Start > Run > Cmd.exe, type "Sfc /scannow" and press Return) and see if everything shows up correctly. Check for anything dodgy running on startup with msconfig (start > Run > msconfig) and autoruns. Run Malwarebytes in Safe Mode, then run an offline scan using something like the F-Secure Rescue CD
