Seriously charitable gesture, yes he is loaded but this is a genuinely lovely thing to do, he didnt have to after all.

According to his Wiki page "In 2009, the couple's joint wealth was estimated at £125 million" So his amazing deed would be like me giving 2 euro to charity.

Jesus, it's a nice thing to do, isn't that enough to say? I thought I was pretty cynical but not compared to some of the miserable feckers here...

With all due respect, that covers about 90% of clothing companies in the world most companies have their clothes made in Asian countries, none of which pay their staff well.

Every penny to every charity helps, yes he is loaded, but you know his salary for that time will be a pretty penny. There are wealthier even than him who wouldn't part with their píss were it not a bodily function.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 19,802 ✭✭✭✭suicide_circus

David Beckham is a business. Every move, press release etc is calculated to increase profits, nothing more.

They do a lot for charity, always have. It's easy to be cynical about it but at the end of the day vulnerable people are benefiting from what they do... even if they themselves also benefit indirectly as a result.

Would it be better if they didn't use their fame etc to help those less fortunate?

Fair play to him, Cant understand all the negative responses here to his gesture ?

I doubt there is a person in the developed world that would argue that the Beckham name is indeed a brand, but not every brand is generous enough to donate large sums of money like that.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 12,438 ✭✭✭✭El Guapo!

I can't understand why people try to see the negatives in absolutely everything.
Even if there is some ulterior motive behind it, who cares. It's still a very nice thing to do and I'm sure the charity will be very grateful for the donation.
Fair play to him I say.

Under French law he gets to keep all his merchandising rights and no club contract can take it away from him. Its good business and a nice touch. Plus the new French tax regime would of pulled a massive lump off him anyway.

Of course it is good if vulnerable people benefit. But the backslapping and kudos Beckham Inc are getting for this publicity stunt is OTT

It's not OTT in the world of football. He's a footballer donating his wages to charity.

In a global sport partly ruined by money and greed it's a pretty big deal and hopefully will inspire other of the more elite footballers to contribute some, if not more than they already do.

David Beckham is a great man off the pitch and a great leader and ambassador for football on it.

All that wealth and he still can't afford to feed his wife.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,788 ✭✭✭tritium

I've always thought him massively overrated as a player. However as a human being he earns my respect with this absolutely beautiful gesture. Who cares if it's not huge relative to his wealth, when you think of how much good this gesture will do. Compare this to the spoilt brats of the premier league pissing away their wages on cars and gambling.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,701 ✭✭✭JJayoo

    Strong logic.

I might have to explain my point for the slower posters. The only reason people are talking about this is because it is brand Beckham. It shows how little the actual children involved matter and in fact they only seem to "exist" when they are associated with the brand.

To prove my point, where are the threads dedicated to Patrice Motsepe? A man who has pledged to give half of his wealth to charity. He is worth 2.65 Billion.

so when is his wife launching her new collection in paris again ??

nice gesture , but other reasons for it im sure
why give it to a paris charity ? could he have not gave it to unhcr and then not be accused of trying to butter up the french for some other commercial reason.

stick woman has a hand in this , and not out of kindness

Only 2.65bn of 5bn? Why doesn't he give more? He doesn't need it all and neither does his family. He is so greedy. Probably doing it to make himself feel better about the amount of people that got sick from working in the mines or didn't make any money from his low salary, share-the-profit based remuneration for his workers. He is probably just trying to promote his business by doing this.

Oh wait, I'm not a massive cynic and actually think he did something that will benefit loads of people. As did Beckham.

yup , he helped loads , no doubt , the kids , him , his agent and his bint of a wife selling more rags

and using your logic - he has 150 million , why not give a hundred million , he does not need it and neither does his family , he is so greedy

it is self promotion - but if kids get some help , great , but its still self promotion

dont get the two things mixed up

He'll make millions with some French perfume or lipstick company now.

Does he ever play a full game any more ? I notice when is actually on, he just takes free kicks and corners and jogs about for the rest of the game.

no no go ahead , explain away

becasue as you wrote it , it looks like he still has loads more to give , why does he not give more , well same applies for david beckahm inc

and as i have said twice now - i think if the kids benifit then am all for it , but dont bull**** me that this was not calculated for better promotion in paris
altruistic ? na , i dont buy that

I'd be well peed if I was writing his paycheck every week, and it really stung to pay that much, and he gives it away to charity. His Boss must be really nice..

You haven't seen very much of him lately then have you.

    Cynical cynical people on here.

Fair play to him, who gives a shi*e about the tax breaks or supposed ulterior motives. Bottom line is, a worthy charity will benefit to the tune of a few million euro.

    Well done becks.

How is it spin? Its a fact. Its ALL his wages. Not a days, a weeks or a months. All of it, for the term of his contract.

But sure you think he doesn't even play anymore.

I shed tears for him, poor Becks, he'll starve.

Absolute Pocket money compared to the french fashion deals that'll come rolling in.

People do realise that Beckham needs no more publicity to entice sponsors, right? He is a sponsors wet dream already.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,547 ✭✭✭Agricola

Fair play to Beckham. He's a dying breed. A professional footballer who isnt a money obsessed narcissist, unlike so many of the toerags that have dragged the game into the gutter in the last few years. You wouldnt see a lot of the preening man babies playing the game today doing something like this, no matter how rich they were.

So for it be worthy to you, he has to give every penny in his bank account and everything he may ever earn again to charity?

You're a tough cookie to please. A couple of million to a childrens charity is more deserving of derision from you than anything else.

    calm down there love ;)

what has been donated or to who is not the question , have you read the thread?

not one person has said its a bad idea, or that the children wont benefit hugely,
what is being questioned is the motive ,IF ANY
i for one dont believe it is motive less , if not for his wife clothing business , then for some other sponsor related reason .

do you think the LA galaxies paid so much for him becasue of his playing talents ? no , they did it for replica shirt sales and media coverage
they could have gotten 5 MUCH better players for that amount

they went for him for good commercial reasons , as did PSG
so all around him think its good for business , and lets not forget he is brand beckham , the end result for the charity is lotto winning land for them , delighted for them , and dont try infer otherwise

most altruistic people dont let the world know of their actions , he did.
he could have gone and done charity work on the qt , or donated it without telling anyone , he did it for self promotion

nothing wrong with that - but that is what it is

    understand now ?
