I knew that it was expensive but I didn't realise just how expensive. Didn't know that it came in "rock" form either I always thought it was some sort of rubbery puke splat thing. Must keep my eyes open at the beach from now on.

It is theorised that ambergris is produced by the stomach of the sperm whale to ease the passage of hard parts of squid exoskeleton (squid being the main diet of these animals)

How do things like this go from being what they are to being something this valuable?

Because people have more money than sense.

Ambergris has been used for centuries, but not so much now as it's so hard to find and therefore expensive. Likewise musk, from the glands of certain animals (well, they find it sexy). Chemical compounds that mimic it are found as basenotes in perfumes that you probably enjoy - though I'd say they're ruined for you now. :D
Harks back to the days when people didn't want to smell like a teenage girl in a florist's that has been scrubbed down with detergent.

"I'll be home in three days," wrote Napoleon to Josephine, "don't wash."

Funnily enough the only time I have heard of the word Ambergis was in a not so well known song by a very well known band below are the lyrics can you guess the band (no googling) but I bet you will anyway!

I catch the scent of Ambergris

    And turn my head surprised

My gaze is caught and held and I

    Am helpless....Mesmerised

No, what's sick is women rubbing this stuff all over themselves like a dog rolling in shyte. Sometimes walking into a room full of dolled up women is like being tear gassed.

****whale vomit found in co clare*****

    could be worth 100k
TWO surfing pals may have struck sea gold after finding what appears to be a lump of rare whale vomit that could fetch them tens of thousands of euro.
Alan Davey (38), from Ennis, Co Clare, was getting surf lessons in lahinch from his friend Brian Miller, from Cratloe, when they saw the unusual substance, believed to be ambergris, on the beach.

I just google imaged what that stuff looks like. I could easily have walked over it millions of times. It just looks like a normal rock!

On doing so, unemployed Mr Willman discovered the substance is likely to be ambergris - a lump of sperm whale vomit – which is used in perfumes such as Chanel No.5 to amplify the scent.

So that explains why Chanel No.5 smells so bad...
