Hey, srsly pls no ****ed up sarcasm and ****ty jokes.. not in mood for that.
Basically my car started ****ing up in middle of streeg on busy roqd (N2 going to chqrleatown i think) in idle rpm started going and bouncing between 500-1200 rpm. ths car is shaking madly and.in both ways clutch up in neutral and clutch fully in. When car is rolling with in any gear it keeps jugging/stopping randomly which is annoying. It drives ok but i feel its not giving full power. There is no warning lights or anything. Its annoying and i know its unsafe really as car seems can accelerate into any other car in front of me, and rapidly stop and get hit.in back, but i still need to drive home from charlestown so hope no accidents.

Any ideas? it really pisses me off as it got full service done recently, and in a week some weird stuff like this happens.

Only thing that changed is i installed battery that has 100 amp less starting power, but in halforda they said thats the right battery. Any ideas? anything i can check?

the weird thing is when its idle for about 20 seconds rpm stabilizes and stays at about 700 rpm, but when just accelerated a bit it goes up and when drops fo idle starts bouncing. Ideas? and how much this problem would cost to fix? :(

The handful of times I come into this forum you always have something going wrong with you or your car or whatever.

The Freudian slip in my original post was "your forum".

Seriously, if you are in Charlestown, get to the shopping centre, park it and get a bus home, it doesn't sound safe to drive.

Then get it towed to a garage and have them diagnose and price the failure for you.

    e46 318i if I recall correctly.

OP did you not get a head gasket replacement recently?

We should get you your own thread at least at this stage...

Different car, but on my alfa, the crankshaft sensor went, exact same symptoms as OP describes above, when I read it first, I thought it might be it, but as it's a different car, didn't. It was a fairly horrid experience.

Wasn't expensive to fix, part was about €50ish, took a bit of labour though.

I am in my parking lot, replacing battery with old one. Got home driving mostly in 2nd gear using back roads and estate streets

It may be because of the angel eye headlights, I hear sometimes they make the RPM jump, but not as you described, ususally from 800-1900RPM

Sounds like what my car was doing when the battery was basically flat and I was jumping it to get it around.
Seeing as you've changed the battery for one with less power, it'd hardly be that?
With the new battery in, check it alternator belt, the alternator it self and drive without the radio or any lights on (during the day of course). If it's still like that, I'm wrong but at least you'll have rulled out one problem.

I miss Pudsey and his Levin.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,512 ✭✭✭arleitiss

Okay I am back home. Changed battery and went for driving. Drove 10 miles. I noticed the RPM's stay steady now more or less.
When it stops accelerating the RPM needle drops down, to 500 then rises up to about 700 and stays there. It makes a very very very little bounces sometimes (about 20-30 rpm) and that's it. Also I fueled up for 50 euros. I had fuel gauge at around ~5-10 litres left. But like still no fuel warning light, could it be somewhat that related?
Anyway I am off to halfords tomorrow giving their battery back... they gave me wrong one probably as with my old battery it works fine. My old one is 540 AMPS starting power and the new one is 440 Amps. They said that's the one I need, but it doesn't work properly though.

    Route: http://www.gmap-pedometer.com/?r=5803976
Video (**** quality, but just for the laugh): http://youtu.be/VQLyCY3SO5A

So I guess it's something to do with new battery.

The revs jumping is probably to do with the charging circuit not liking your new battery at all. If you need a need a new one, get one with identical spec this time. 440A is of a lower spec than 540A.

    I don't care, problems fixed.
People don't flash anymore I think I just thought they did : Problem solved. Not adjusting lights anymore.
RPM Stay normal with old battery : Problem solved, not getting any fixes or anything.
Engine works fine : All problems solved.

So I don't care now that problems went away. If it is blinding anyone - I am sure Garda will stop me some day and give a warning and warn me.

P.S - Too bad at least half of those who commented are pure sarcastic authors, and can't really help much other than make comments.

The only people I can say thanks for at least making small bit of help or hint

Seriously though, why can't I post? Why do people start acting like an assholes just because I post a lot? If you don't like it, why the **** do you visit forums then....
I am new to cars, driving for less than a year only, how am I supposed to know everything that some of you know?
It's same as you asking something about: XHTML, CSS3, PHP, JavaScript, MySQL, Java, C# (those are programming languages for web sites and software) and if some of you are learning them and ask a question on forums about one thing, same as me pretty much replying: "noob you fail, and write lines of sarcasm". I am in college most of the time, and I don't have time to learn about cars as much as some of you know. So why can't some just help but rather make sarcastic comment and cry about me posting a lot.

I'm disappointed, not only did I not act like a dick, I gave a suggestion, backed up a suggestion that it might be the crank sensor.

If you want a genuine answer to your question, I'll give you mine. It may sound cruel, and it probably is a bit, but I genuinely think it's fair.

    1. We are not your mother/s. There are plenty of resources out there from google, the manual for your car, not the service book, the detailed manual mechanics use, diagnostic tools, the rules of the road book, the rsa website, which could probably answer at least 50% of the questions you put up here. A bit of thought and analysis and you'd figure out at least 50% of the answers to that 50% of questions that I am referring to. ALL BY YOURSELF. E.g. your "I went through a toll" question

    2. You appear to be misfortune prone. It's rare (coming from an alfa driver) that I'd say that, but in a year of driving I'd not have the problems you have in a week, a part of me, and possibly other posters, wonders if you spend your days in college/work, thinking up posts to make. Just this week, you've had problems being flashed continuously by motorists, your car started shaking and losing power, and it's only Wednesday!

This is a fairly welcoming forum, I've found, I've not been here long, and I don't know much. A lot of what I do know is either from knowing rules/procedures (nct/how to drive right), familiarity with the area I'm in, tending to buy cheap cars that I have to figure out what might be wrong with, being on specialist forums for alfa unfortunates, reading and learning from what's on here.

Oh and another thing, it's rare to see you give back here. Most of us (even the likes of me who know feck all about what's under the bonnet) try to help out others as a thanks to those who've helped us. You don't appear to.

And I always try to help and talk to people from areas that I am familiar with, which is web development and programming forums, as you can see cars isn't my strongest side, I rather help someone with something I am 100% sure with than give 50% possible correct answer which may end up being totally wrong.

No problem :) I'm just saying that rather than coming in here every time you have a problem, do a google, I know english is not your first language, get on a few bmw sites and just read/search about your car, it's an E46 yeah? And if you see someone here having an issue you know about, then take the time to spend a few minutes trying to help them out, you may not be right, but sometimes you will and you'll learn from it too.

And there's a thanks button, it's a small thing, but people appreciate you taking time to appreciate their making an effort.

Worst thing that will happen here if you make a wrong suggestion is that someone will call you on it, not a massive blow to the ego to be honest, and again it's a learning opportunity.

An if you're an IT student, it will be a fantastic learning opportunity, and a real skill to develop for when you go to work, and are stuck there in a crisis with everyone throwing out all sorts of ideas, and you needing to learn that it's ok to do.

Yes I am an IT student, most of the free time I spent doing projects, writing all the documentation for projects and software, so the only place which seems like good place to ask for advice and help is boards.ie but even then it seems like a bad idea now. And in my opinion it's not a good idea to pick up idea that someone has from public forums and boards like these, because if it's in public and if someone has that idea - most likely somebody is working on solution for that problem already or there is solution made already.

You're doing yourself a disservice as an IT student, you're not displaying any ability to research/analyse by relying on one source of information. The day to day world of IT is not the place for someone like that.

I think that's possibly the most insulting thing you've said on here. Literally since Christmas you are posting pretty much every day looking for advice and information, and help, and you've gotten plenty, enough to get you back on the road in some cases, to help you pass your driving test in others.

Did you mean to say that it's not good to use forums to learn?

It is good, but what I mean is most of the times I've been regretting I asked anything or created a thread as they often ended up in one of the following:
    1) Derailed
    2) Locked
    3) Someone banned
And I always end up thinking.... wtf just happened?
Yes there have been a lot of threads I made which got answered and I got help from them and I learned some stuff from them. But as I said: it's 50/50. Sometimes I am glad I asked, and sometimes I wish I didn't.

Now while still doing a degree in college (2 more years to go out of 4) I am kind of a freelancer looking for work, like making websites for people I see online asking for them, websites for friends. As I don't have professional degree yet I don't charge a lot, and since I enjoy doing stuff like that - I don't mind any kind of money.
And for software: I look into problems I have myself and then search for software and if I don't find it - I code it and make it.
My latest problem was: In car, I had stereo which couldn't read Russian letters, so I made a software which converts all russian letters into English letters and released it so maybe that helped someone, maybe not. By saying all that I mean right now as still in process of learning - it's not my primary job, it's more of a hobby, I have lots of hobbies - photography, 3D Modeling, game design, level designs and so on. So I am not really looking for a lot of work right now as I don't want to take more than I can handle.

Maybe think before you post in future, do a google search etc. Also listen to what you are being told in the threads

Usually I get two things from thread:
    1) Solution and help to a problem.
    2) Individuals saying "stop posting" basically.
