Does anyone have any info on election counting positions ? What are they looking for and is it good experience ? :)

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 9,487 ✭✭✭banquo

If you can count, you're in. Duddy^^^ (Returning Officer, the Boss) will explain everything to the team.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 291 ✭✭roxyworldgirl

Ha ha seems like a tough application process.
Does it look good on cvs ?
Pretty sure this is a stupid question because I'm sure of the answer but is it paid or what? Just the way they ask for a cv and basically a cover sheet seems very formal if voluntary

    :)

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 9,487 ✭✭✭banquo

Email returning.officer@nuimsu.com, Ciaran (Duddy here on boards) will be able to answer all your questions. I know it's an open call for applicants, don't know how many they actually need but always worth it throwing your name in.

You can ask about it at the Hustings, if the candidates have no policy on it in their manifestos.

    Also, I am unaware who a lot of the people running for things are. Truly no longer a student ;_;

Don't worry though, I'll make up for it in hackyness when I triumphantly return.

I'm fairly sure her name was half the reason she was convinced to run. From what she and her friends have said anyway! There are some epic campaign slogans on the way!

    Hey,

I (Kieran Timmons) am running for Vice President for Clubs, Societies and Union Development. I have linked my campaign page which contains part of my manifesto. I still have some more to add to it, should be up by the end of the week. I know which part of my manifesto will drive Banquo mad :D. If you have any questions about my manifesto you can ask me on this or by pm.

Whoever has the banner outside JH 1 should probably take it down...a night in the rain has left it looking like some kind of anti-abortion material.

True, with that crowd it's get'em while they're young, or in this case while they're college students :)

I did theology for a year a while back and i'll never forget the two elections for theology rep within weeks of each other. Without naming anybody, one person stepped down after the first election but at the start of almost every class there was a speech by one of the two candidates. Not that I was complaining, less theology class time. It was a rare occasion any of the other people running would come over to canvas in Saint Pat's. But I think, without the help of one of those candidates, I wouldn't have been able to vote at the time:)

I'd like to address your statement "Unforgettable Fire"

It's not like me to take to heart what somebody says on this but I think what you've said is unfair.

If you think I'm talking ****e, I'm going to give you my last years manifesto and compare it with it's current state. Please keep in mind that every candidate made promises that might not have fully came into fruition. I understand now what is possible in this job.

Bare with me, I wrote quite a bit last year.
"You cant spell entertainment without maynooth. Ok, you can, but thats not the point, Maynooth is simply the place to be and the high level of inward migration from students of other colleges is testament to that fact. Another generally accepted fact is that the SU with its ridiculously amazing €2.50 deal on fosters can barely muster up a handful of people on a good night. You couldn’t buy a napkin in mantra for €2.50! Why then is our beloved underdog, the SU, in such undesirable circumstances? Well maybe it’s because our entertainment really aint up to much.
Apart from the odd mega gig like Calvin Harris, the SU really is being underused and is being abandoned by students as a result. Why are we standing by and watching that place gather cobwebs? A big dream of mine is to have the SU back to where it was 4 years ago when I first entered college. That was a time of enthusiasm, when anything could happen and that burning desire to entertain is absent from the SU of this year. Bigger acts, Intervarsity battle of the bands, more super sweet cheap drink, less mickey joe hart and a lot less crazy frog being played on the jukebox on repeat. "

Answer: Bar is the most active and profitable it has been since 2009, I run 2 nights there a week, usually a quiz, bingo or getting live music for Thursdays. The Freshers Week video got over a thousand views in 2 days. We've shifted the balance from the odd mega event to constant free events to cater for changing times and tightening budgets. Ask the bar themselves. Things are much better.

"Put short, I want to make you excited about the Print. I want students to talk about it, learn from it and most of all I want you to feel a greater connection to this establishment after reading it. "

The print has had greater readership this year, if that is judged by copies left over. I would never criticise Broni's because as Paczini said, its a matter of opinion, but it is a friendlier and more student orientated publication. People know their union better from constant blurbs and notices of the sevices we provide. Both styles have their merits and cater for different people and I think it's great that we have the student standard to provide a more journalistic approach of student life.

The promise of regular video production:
Finally in January we got the camera, after a 2 month waiting period. This camera was needed to fulfil my main campaign promise last year. In the two weeks I’ve had it I have produced a new series called MSUnreal with 4 episodes so far and a huge pick up online achieving over 1,400 views in 4 days. I promised a news show and you’re going to get one. This election is a distraction and disables me from producing anything but I know how easy it is. If you don't believe me that's fine.

    Radio
"I want to establish a radio station as well but I’ve heard this could be very difficult. For that reason, I would establish regular podcasts and have already been in contact with students who would be more than happy to host them."

Ask Broadcasting society founder and current president Colm Walsh what I've achieved with him on that front. Equipment secured by me is almost fully up to spec, station name is registered and all thats required is one installment of funding. It is inches from being fully realised and not to point the finger but there is red tape involved.

There was one other promise which was annihilated straight away at hustings last year because I found out it wasn't in my remit and that is getting wifi for river and rye. It was hit on the head there and then.

Perhaps still everything I said, despite being the truth is still all lies to you, and I have achieved nothing. In that case, I deeply regret making you read all of this. Thanks. *insert smart gif here*

Fair play Mal. I came off worse than I intended in my post. Apologies.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,764 ✭✭✭mickstupp

    @MalCallan
I still have no idea what the thing looks like. Are you guys only printing a hundred or so? I can never find a copy. Does it say PRINT on the front? In big writing? Because if so... I still have never seen a copy.

Last year I knew what I was looking for and it was prominently displayed for minimum three days, often you could find it for a week (or I could at least). This year, not a hope.

Maybe with future issues, could someone come here and post up a big screenshot of the front cover, just so complete morons like me can find it? Maybe with a list of places you leave it? I don't even know when it gets printed. Every week? Three weeks? Two months? When should I be looking for it?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 9,487 ✭✭✭banquo

Is it about every two months?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 9,487 ✭✭✭banquo

Oh. I'm totally impartial, but everyone needs to look at Steve Fleming's election video right now. Hardest I've laughed in months.
