    Hi all
I ave a serious amount of weight to lose (4+ stone), And have just joined up at the gym. The fitness instructor told me it's a good idea to have protein after my work out. The problem is I don't have time to go home straight after and make a meal so what would be a good on the go protein source? A protein shake perhaps? I'm following a low GI diet btw.

Why don't you make a meal before the gym and eat it after? Or/and take a protein shake along with it?

I usually have a can of tuna and a few nuts into a resealable food container. Tuna is very low in fat and high in protein.

yes a protein shake sounds the most convenient after your workout. but ideally this will have carbs too. These can be simple High GI carbs as your body wont store them as fat after a workout. As you said you can stay low GI rest of the time.

there are special recovery supplements as above with a good ratio of protein:carbs. This ratio is usually 1:2 Protein to carbs

you can just buy ordinary protein powder and mixed it in that ratio with simple glucose powder bought in tesco.

there is also an AllinOne supplement you could take postwork out

or you can skip the carbs post workout and just have the protein. this may hamper recovery though.

Thanks guys. The workout I'll be doing is quite low impact as I need to avoid joint injury and get some of the flab off before I can do more intense training. My diet is a shambles though and I really struggle to eat enough protein so the shakes would probably work out well for me.

Also are any of the protein powders any use from Holland&Barrett http://www.hollandandbarrett.ie/pages/categories.asp?np=&sid2=&showAll=False&cid=47&sid=&sort2=1&bid=&searchtext=&page=3
I don't really have access to online shopping at the moment so if anyone can recommend a good one to get in shops? Thanks!

Where are you based? There are a few shops around town: Camden St - Fighting Fit being one and if you're near Dun Laoghaire there's UNsportsnutrition

A smoothie or some Greek yoghurt will do post workout
