Was it another dude? Then that'd be gay. Otherwise no.

gayest instead of stupidest. Not to be taken literally obviously.

But getting back to the original point, texting as a tool for conversation is pathetic.

Texting is grand. When ya don't have time or you're not in a position to ring someone ya can get info that ya need. Besides phone convos can be awkward when you don't know someone too well. Lay off.

Sounds gay. I'm seeing a pattern here, OP.

I have a mate I play CoD with a few times a week. 90% of our text message conversations consist of

    "live?"

    "Eating. 15 minutes"

In regards to phone use, I'm glad texting exists.

It private/quiet moments and at an appropriate time, a person can receive what maybe an important message during a function. They can get it and reply quickly and quietly without causing a disturbance to those around them. Phones on silent mode.

I'm glad texting also exists because it sometimes cuts down on un-necessary chatter and each possible text stays centered around one topic. Mindless, time wasting waffle is helped to be cut down on for me. I say what I need to say and get on with life.

I don't like the short abbreviations of text-speak extending into normal grammatical use in standard literature and possible test submissions, etc.

Text-speak has its use and place.
A tool is only as good as how its used.

Still prefer the tried and trusted 'Telegram' myself, though correspondence is far less frequent, and at times can be a little 'out of date', a question such as:

"Are you still searching for the perfect husband?"

Could be met with the reply:

"No, I'm now married with six children, we'll talk again 'soon', bye for now"

Maybe just ring the person rather than replying to them all the time and encouraging them to text you,
if it bothers you that much

My only issue with texting is text speak. And when people get so used to it that they use it on Facebook or on forums it makes my brain hurt.

I don't text as much as I used to due to Facebook and I also prefer to call people these days as well.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 4,180 ✭✭✭hfallada

Texting is cheap and quick. And you can check what the other person said which on the phone or in person you could forget. Plus you can text a person when you can't phone them

Voice recognition software, I'm no troglodyte.

Also, I've bound my keyboard to a branch with sinew. I call it keyboard on a stick.

Teenagers are the worst.I have to text my niece to tell her to answer her phone when I'm trying to ring her. It's as if they've forgotten that a phones primary use is for talking to people.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 4,940 ✭✭✭Corkfeen

I've always felt uncomfortable speaking to people on phones etc so t'is fantastic for people like myself. Not every single person wants to engage in a long winded conversation when they need to contact someone..

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,738 ✭✭✭Jay D

Depends on the persons. If texting is working fine then happy days. I won't have time to be talking to someone during work etc although a text might lift me a bit if the craic is good.

Personally though it's the talking that does it best. Each to their own.

Nah don't mind texting at all but only because I hate talking on the phone.

Nothing wrong with texting, it's quick easy and fun but i do prefer to chat on the phone, depending on who im chatting to of course.

I have big fingers, so texting is a bit hit and miss. I tend to avoid it. If you have a teenager available, it is much quicker to chuck them the phone and get them to do it. Somtimes the teenagers run off screaming, several have run off with the phone and five or six called the Gards. I'm going to have to invest in a teenager of my own to follow me around.

Was just about to reply to say this. I hate phonecalls, except to my mum and boyfriend, so texting is great for me, I use emails to contact people for work issues where possible, hate phonecalls so much.

    Not me.

You can text somebody about anything like 'did you see that goal?' 'Yeah it was great etc'.

Now think of that phone conversation?

    'Great goal eh'
    'Eh yeah...so eh...do you...like...stuff?'

Obviously it's not that awkward with your mates, but the point is, you communicate and acknowledge the smaller things via text.

    A conversation isn't always required.

In short, all hail text messaging and all it variants (iMessage, BBM)!

It's getting harder to text on these new smartphones.

    Texting was a great invention.
Twitter I have discovered is just texting the whole internet at once. Well only if you are famous or funny, otherwise nobody ever reads it.

    I blames unlimited text plans.

It has turned the nation into simpletons.

I can see some situations where a text can be useful but this crap of sending text after text of utter scutter is idiotic

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 2,117 ✭✭✭Defiler Of The Coffin

Touchscreens have made texting too cumbersome. If only Apple had made it fashionable to have a phone with nice big chunky buttons. Still, don't see the harm in actual texts themselves, language erosion notwithstanding

I like texting, thinks its up there with sliced bread and ice cream. Anything that means I dont have to listen to more bullsh1t than is necessary is a winner in my book.
