got my ticket this morning. Hopefully the bastards won't cancel again this year.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,345 ✭✭✭Somnus

Excellent. I'll definitely pick up a ticket for this

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 805 ✭✭✭xerces

I think I'll pick up a ticket for this.

Crack The Skye is my favourite Mastodon album, but I also enjoy the more melodic approach they took with their most recent album The Hunter.

Got my ticket (again) Any word/rumours on whose supporting?

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 7,863 ✭✭✭seachto7

wonder will they release a full length dvd of the Brixton show. There were some pro shots online last year of a couple of tracks, and if it's anything like those, I'll cream my pants!

Got my ticket, wonder who's supporting? Please be Gojira!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,320 ✭✭✭roast

Curious about supports. Always wanted to see Mastodon, but the addition of Gojira is what sold it for me last year.
Really hope it's the same line up.... doubtful though.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,345 ✭✭✭Somnus

I agree. I would love for it to be Gojira, but can't see that happening now tbh. Should still be a good gig though!

Can't believe this is still on sale. Both nights sold out so fast last year.

somehow managed to miss that this was coming up...after seeing the thread though tickets have been gotten and all's well with the world. much obliged

I'd say Gojira were a massive factor in that.

Saw them a few years go (maybe 5?) in the academy and it was one of the best gig's I've ever been too and I'm not even much of a mastadon fan, a ticket just fell in my lap and a lad i knew way driving up anyway.

I read the start of your post and thought that we were going to say you had two spare VIP tickets that you were willing to sell on. Ah, well!:( Enjoy though!

Really wanna go, but my friends are broke at the moment and we'll just be back from Rock Am Ring at that stage, so might not be easy to get to the gig after that.

    That's cool.

We'll need a pic of the lads from Mastodon holding a small sign that says hello to Boards.ie's Rock & Metal forum though... :pac:

Looking forward to this so close now, hope the academy is still intact after the slayer gigs, had a sneaky at their recent sets and pleased to see a certain 13 min track theyre currently ending with, i imagine theyll chop and change over the 2 nights.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 79 ✭✭Deschain

^ Yea I seen they were ending with The Last Baron, I really hope they do again. It would be a fantastic ending, what a song.

How did that get here!? :P

I won't go back on what I said though, I'll gladly buy a round if there's ever another R/M beers. Not that I'm bloody loaded or anything, but I've learned a lot about music throughout my time on this forum and it would be a simple gesture of appreciation (I hear attendance at such events is pretty sparse in any case!).

Driving up from the shticks tomorrow. Any advice on parking around the Academy?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 552 ✭✭✭whiterob81

I drive into gigs in the academy from Dublin 15 the odd time and I normally just park on capel street because it's free in the evening time. But if you're leaving your car overnight I'd recommend the car park behind cineworld on Parnell street. They do a €9 overnight rate.

Ah, Capel Street it is. I could park behind the Grand Social as well. Good to know thanks.

what time will mastodon be on as im not interested in the support and am heading to download tomorrow so taking it easy on the oul sauce.
    cheers.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 552 ✭✭✭whiterob81

Not sure about Mastodon but I've been told that Harvester are on just before 8 for 30 mins so I suppose anytime from 8.30 on

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,451 ✭✭✭Wrongway1985

Pretty good gig not the best ive seen em great to have them in the academy though finished around 10:20 no encore unfortunately played around 19 tracks 10 of which were off the hunter, At the end Brann said they might play some different songs 2moro so i reckon the 2moro will have the better set wont be there but will catch them at download for sure quality act.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,150 ✭✭✭Passenger

What time were they on stage at, 9ish?

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 7,863 ✭✭✭seachto7

Was it me or was the sound utter ****e? Couldn't hear the vocals, guitar solos or talk between songs. I was in front of the sound desk too. Some serious guitar porn though. If I lived in Dublin I would go tomorrow. Some "hits" missing off tonights set. Overall a good gig. The pit was good craic to watch.

Was hoping for some more enthusiastic feedback considering how well Slayer were received yesterday and the day before. Hopefully tomorrows performance will be great, really looking forward to it.

Met brent afterwards sound out pity id left my ticket back at the hotel guy i was with got his signed, it would be easier to say tracks they didnt play off the hunter album which were the title track, bedazzled fingernails & creature lives played the rest opening with black tongue of course, rest of set included wolf is loose, crystal skull, megalodon, oblivion, iron tusk, crack the skye, march of fire ants, blood and thunder, missing a track amongst those so imagine 19 they played

They didn't play the wolf is loose. Class gig all the same, ****e sound though.

Ur right cross that off twas hand of stone the 2nd track they played whoops, sound was ok in certain areas i moved around a good bit though.

Was wondering, they seem to have dropped it from current tour set list. Damn. What are the chances tonight they'll crack out Emerald again, it being Dublin an all...nice

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 862 ✭✭✭Vudgie

Mastodon and poor sound seem to go hand in hand....though they were crystal cler last time out in Vicar Street.

I am heading tonight and I was hoping the venue would help their sound:(

  • Hosted Moderators Posts: 6,817 ✭✭✭jenizzle

I really enjoyed the gig but I'm a bit disappointed with the length of their set tbh - they played great and really seemed to be enjoying themselves, but just over 1 hr 20 is too short IMO.

The sound came and went where we were. Couldn't hear their vocal at the start, then a few songs into it, it was grand, then it went again.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 463 ✭✭hellyeah

im going against the grain here, but was up stairs on the balcony and i thought they sounded great. Was a sober gig for me so its not the beer talking.
Have seen them before when sound quality was poor. Really enjoyed the gig and thought the crowd gave them a great reception. Good warm up for me for download.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 21,659 ✭✭✭✭Mushy

I thought the sound was grand, could hear everything clearly. Was in the pit, was absolutely great fun. Crowd was cool, no idiots. Brant being off the drugs is doing him a world of good. Easily best time Ive seen them. My body is thankful it didnt go on any longer.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 463 ✭✭hellyeah

^ Yeah looked pretty crazy down there all right. No idiots is always a plus.
The band seemed to appreciate your efforts down in the pit.:D

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 11,959 ✭✭✭✭scudzilla

Pits have changed A LOT over the years, too many fcukin idiots just go in there for the violence and to hurt people.

In pits i went in during the late 80's/early 90's these idiots were soon found out and fcuked off, and people looked after each other. Too many times now i see kids going down and not being helped up IMMEDIATELLY.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,561 ✭✭✭rickyjb

Poor sound and no encore = a bit of a let down really. Couldn't hear the higher pitched guitar notes all night (aqua dementia sounded way off).

Vicar St. was a much better gig, and Marlay Park even.

    At least Slayer were class...

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 552 ✭✭✭whiterob81

Thought it was a deadly gig. Great setlist and they seemed to be really into it. Sound was really ropey at the back of the venue but I thought it was grand once you got into the main pit

Overheard a couple at the end of the night

Girlfriend: "Brann is such a ride, I would so do him"

Boyfriend: "Ah **** off, he looks like Vanilla Ice"

    :)
