Hi There, I am doing really well in a personal training program at the moment, my diet is excellent and I go to the gym practically every day of the week, My question is I rarely drink now but I would love to go for a few pints now and then say once a month, would it affect me much? I had a few over christmas and it made little difference to my weight loss which is down every time I get weighed. Thanks in advance

I cant imagine a few scoops once a month would have a terribly bad reflection on your training.....i dont do it cause i eat for Ireland when im pissed, and i eat for europe when im hungover!!!

ha ha!! the age old struggle

    Pints v training :D

I like to drink... a lot..

but I find if I go out then my trianing the next day is brutal and I feel bad about it. I went out last Friday and stayed out late.. then got up and ran a 5 mile cross country race which I hated every step of.. worse race ever.

What works for me is if I dont deny myself a few pints but cut down and stick to designated evenings when I have no training the next day.

l think human nature makes us crave stuff we deny ourselves so when I go out I try not feel bad about it and know I will make up for it in training the next week.

they say for people dieting that you should allow yourself a cheat day every now and again as then you dont feel your missing out.
I suppose thats true for people training too.

OP, do you have a PT? If they've designed a specific programme for you they should be the ones to ask!

A night on the piss once in a while wont be detrimental to your training especially if you're at a stage you're happy in yourself! If you were training for something specific like weight loss or a sporting event then maybe you'd have to think twice about it but if it's just training for general health then definitely go out & enjoy yourself once in a while! You need to reward yourself every now & then!

A few drinks now and then isn’t going to have any massive detrimental effect on your training, but I’d be clever about it - i.e. work it so the day you’re hungover is a rest day! I don’t drink that often, but I never train hungover. I know some people do and ‘sweat it out’ etc., but I just don’t see the point as you’ll only be half arsing about anyway and training for your conscience rather than to make any progress. I’d swap the beer for spirits though, or limit it at 2/3 beers.

Go out and enjoy yourself, just be sensible.

4-5 pints is ok, not so many that you would be wrecked the next day. Start early and finish early.

Having 8 pints, some jaeger bombs and then a kebab and garlic chip will fcuk you up thou.

I'd rather have the kebab and garlic chip then the pints :pac:

    That's crazy talk!
just to add - I lost a fair bit of weight in the latter half of last year, and didn't have to cut out the pints completely to do it. if you're sensible and you're getting your diet and exercise right, then four or five pints once a week isn't going to to stop you getting where you want to get to. In my case, it helped me keep up the regime, I'd look forward to the few guilt free pints on a friday/saturday.
in my experience the bigger problem with drink is that it can impact your eating choices after a few pints/the next day.

Like the others have said I think it will affect your overall progress very little.

I really enjoy my beers, its not something I could cut out. I think a balance is the best way between staying fit & healthy and having your fun nights to relax! My general plan is get my Gym/Runs etc in during the week and have the beers on Friday & Saturday night. My diet is very clean and healthy and I for the most part avoid drunk food (go home and have some eggs after a night out).

This approach works for me, I'm in great shape, feel fantastic and am enjoying myself. Balance is the way to go, your diet shouldn't make you miserable, if including the few fun nights out slows you from achieving your goal slightly then so be it...

Would be my way of thinking.

Hi folks, You lot just made me feel a lot better! I went out last night and had a few pints, it was great, I didnt go eating chips and rubbish after tho, came home around 12 o clock. I dont drink that much anymore, I used to have a few every night before. Since I started my training and diet I have lost a stone in weight gained some muscle kicked smoking and I feel brilliant. Thanks again..:)

Drinking can really mess up my training. I don't mind the eating crap food to much, its the tiredness that follows and the general lethargic for a day or two that really affects me.

As with anything, moderation is key (for me anyway). A crazy night out once or twice a month isnt going wreck my training, its when i get in the habit of going out every weekend that derails everything!

I train to look good and want to go out and show of my 8-pack abs, but if i go out to often then i wont have 8-pack abs!

What you want to hear is that it won't do any harm. And it won't.

However a couple of nights out a month, a take away every week, skipping a few meals, skipping the odd training session ....etc will all have a cumulative negative effect. In isolation no problem! Together makes your goals harder achieve.

Going out for "a few pints" rarely ends that way ;)

Probably more to do with the whiskey that followed the pints.

Use the hangover as a rest day, works for me. Also there's no reason not to train before you head out for your few pints. :)

hangover days are the best rest days, rest days im not hungover are too boring:)

Am I the only person who completely loses their appetite once they have a drink? If I go out after work I usually wouldn't have anything to eat till the next day as I lose interest in food after my first pint

while on the subject of hangovers and rest days, what do you all of you eat for "hangover curer food" ?

I used to binge drink every w.end, eat when I came in from the pub and eat nearly everything that crossed me the next day :o
Was wondering why I wasn't getting anywhere weight loss wise

anyways now I usually only have a few vodka's and tonic and I avoid binge eating when I come in, my problem is no matter how much or little I drink the next day I wake up Starving and no matter how much eggs or source of protein I get I always end up still wanting some high calorie, fatty, greasy food:(

I usually am the same. However there has been the occasional Sunday morning when I have woken up on the couch surrounded by enough food to feed a large family.

Yeah it's bad practice anyway, as when I go bingeing on an empty stomach like that I usually end up in a bad way!

Usually a pizza does it for me:)
