If you're looking at antennas could you not just ditch 3 and sign up with a local fixed wireless service?

Having increasing problems with 3g signal dropping and being ongoing weak.
I have the dongle and router in a window at present facing our local mast..

I've been thinking of moving it to the loft and adding a YAGI antenna,

My dongle is locked on the 3 Network, whom I still use..

    however
I read somewhere on the tinernet that the Locking also stops an antenna being used although the port is on the dongle.. Can anyone confirm if this is so?? Is the Antenna port of my E160G locked out, or should it work fine.

Using an external aerial is a very good idea. I use one, have posted about it here: http://www.boards.ie/vbulletin/showpost.php?p=81441236&postcount=4

I am using a stock locked Huawei e122 modem from 3, and the antenna port works fine. I've never heard to the locking process disabling the external antenna port.

Caveat emptor on buying cheap gear from eBay. It might be alright for proof of concept, but doubt it will last especially in our weather. That deal doesn't include the actual cable either.
