Big difference in shaft flex between irons and wedges. Can I ask why and hows it working out?

I take certain ones out depending on where I'm playing.

The 3 wood and hybrid are probably for the chop this year. I might pick up a 910 4 wood. The 7 wood experiment is going very well and a 4 is just a little easier to get airboune off the deck.

Do you find you've lost any control on full shots with the softer shaft?

+1, very interesting topic and one I've done some research into before ordering some wedges recently. With alot of off the rack wedges now having "wedge flex" shafts I was interested to see what this meant.

It varies from company to company but general consensus appears to be that a "wedge flex" shaft is equivalent to a standard DG S300. Why the manufacturers can't just put the specific flex of the shaft on the wedge is thought to represent the "wedge flex" shafts not being to the exacting standards of normal shafts and some thinking "wedge flex" shafts to represent a shaft manufacturers' offcuts that they couldn't otherwise classify as exactly S200, S300, S400 etc.

In terms of a suitable shaft for a wedge general opinion indicates that it's more important to try and match the weight of the shafts in your irons than the flex. You want a stiff enough tip to minimise the dispersion of your shots but yet with enough flex to offer some feel for those delicate shots around the green. Most advocate going for a slightly softer flex in your wedges than in your irons to improve this level of feel but quite alot of pros then choose the same flex in their wedges as in their irons to keep things consistent. It's all relative I guess and depends what works for each individual.

Don't know what wedges and shafts you had before Gorfield so would be interesting to see if you went a flex softer with the new wedges. Also can you advise on why you changed most of the bag to Cleveland (sponsorship deal?) Hadn't you a relatively new set of TaylorMade blades before, what did you do with those?

I think it varies depending on the player, ive experimented with Derek in foregolf on different shafts and i found i rerely hit my wedges flat out if ever! Dispersion with the softer shafts wasnt any different, while spin and feel was defo better.

I do agree the wedge manufacturers using wedge flex is a cost cutting exercise and i would advise good custom fitting with wedges as you can test bounce angles and lofts better.

My old wedges were Foregolf hakusa wedges with DG SL x100, i loved the heads but i couldnt feel the headweight when pitching.

Ive only changed driver and wedges to Cleveland, sponsorship deal?? Amateurs arnt allowed sponsorship deals......;) just equipment support. Ive gone back to wilson irons as id used them for many years with great success. I used Tmade blades last year as id signed an equipment agreement with tmade through the irish team. I didnt have the year i wanted last year so im returning to using wilson irons.

    Hope ive answered everything!

How do you find the gap between your 5 iron to 20 deg hybrid? I was at the range today and was thinking I could add a 17 degree hybrid because I think I could live with a similar gap. Mine is up to a 21 deg 909 hybrid. I'm a bit afraid I'd miss the 4 iron on longer par 3's.

To be honest I personally feel a smooth easy swing on the 20 degree can cover my missing 4 iron length - well worth dropping the 4 iron to accommodate the 4 wedge system , I love it and feel a lot more confident from 100 yds and in now.

I really like them, more playable than std DG x100, i found the ball flight to be most consistent with them as opposed to anything else. Love them.

Irons are stiff shafts and I think I'll get stiff shafts on anything new I buy in future, I think they're a little better for me.

I have space for one more club - any ideas?

    Taylor Made R11 irons 4-9, P, A, S wedges
    Taylor Made Daytona Rossa putter
Balls - something for €2 or less a ball, ideally low spinning.

Irons are stiff shafts and I think I'll get stiff shafts on anything new I buy in future, I think they're a little better for me.

I have space for one more club - any ideas?

3 hybrid or a 60 degree wedge. I find my 3 hybrid a nice club for the longer par 3's or when the ball is nestling down a bit in the fairway. Also handy for when your ball is caught on a heavy green fringe and you can use it as a jigger/chipper.

I'd be a big fan of throwing in a 3 hybrid. Probably my favourite club.
Not liked by a lot of my playing partners but I'd be lost without it.

    Slightly off topic
Was watching QI last weekend and the word jigger came up.
Think it has the most meanings of any word in the English language, with 28 different meanings

Some strange ones indeed, I'll look twice in future when someone says they carry a jigger in their bag.

    "- Jigger: Has 28 different meanings. It is a measuring device (a jigger of rum), a handcar, a sail, a small weight, a snooker rest, a flea, a prison cell, a boot-sole polisher, an old-looking person, a distillery, a pe**s, a copper's knife, a potter's wheel, a back passage, a lathe, a woman's coat, a sieve, a dancer, a pulley, a door, a thingummy, a golf club, a ouija board, a policeman, and a vag**a."

So I took a swig from my jigger told that jigger to stick his jigger up his jigger.
