What supplements do you take and Why?

So I've delved into researching supplements lately, comparing this to that and I've read all the marketers slogans 'This is the best', 'You'll be ripped after a month of this' and all that jibber jabber, excuse the Mr T saying:p

    I've tried quite a few at this stage and whittled the only 2 I use really are;

Whey Protein- to help me get in my grams of protein. If I thought I could eat my target of protein grams/day I wouldn't take this.

Creatine- Because I get good results while cycling it.

Other than that I take my vitamins.

So, what do you take and why? I'm interested to see are BCAA's necessary as they're already in your protein shake so why take them? Beta- alanine, why?

    Cheers,

Fish oil caps - because I don't eat enough fish.
Whey - Although I don't consider this to be a supplement - its just a food I occasionally have.

Whey Protein - I take whey protein post workout to aid with recovery and also to increase my protein intake. It's cheap compared to a lot of other protein sources.

Maltodextin - Used post workout as a quick releasing carb

BCAAs - I take it intra workout, again to help with recovery, I train to a high intensity a lot and this really helps with my recovery. There's electrolytes and glutamine added in to the particular product I buy as well.

Fish Oils - Loads of benefits but mainly for insulin sensitivity, for my skin (which can get bad) and to improve my ratio of omega 3 and 6.

Multivit - I find I get colds a lot less when taking a multi and also because I wouldn't get nearly enough vits through food.

Creatine, caffeine, green tea extract and vitamin D3

Caffeine - Increases muscular performance, energy expenditure, glycogen storage, recovery rate, endurance.

Vitamin D3 - Faster fat loss, (possibly) higher testosterone, increased muscular strength and because most Irish people are deficient this time of year.

All have non athletic benefits too.

Whey Protein - just to add extra protein - usually in a smootie or a quick shake if i'm hungry. I'm not religious about taking it as I feel I get enough from food.
Currently taking kenetica but brands vary.

    BCAAs
    - I weight train fasted most of the time so this helps with energy. I take Dedicated - BCAA sensation

    Essential Fatty acids
    - I eat a good bit of fish but still feel benefit of taking these. I take animal omega.

ZMA - I think this is the best supplement for me. Wake up refreshed with a little less soreness.

    Multivit
    - sometimes take berocca. not religiously.

Paddy is there really any need of all those? Your bill must be enormous per month!

i know it seems a lot but it isn't when bought in bulk. i budget €100 per month, but realistically its between 70-80. Its better than having a few midweek pints is the way i look at it.

where i save money is by being smart about my diet. eating whole foods no frills, i enjoy eating the same thing day after day knowing that its good for me.

linseed and cottage cheese are 2 brilliant and cheap foods

250g linseed in aldi €2.70, 30g per day will give 5g omega 3

300g cottage cheese in aldi 85c, 45g protein per day

I suppose when you put it that way it doesn't sound too much. Aldi seems to be the place for dietary needs!

Eggs ( whey is a supplement so I'm putting eggs cos I eat them as fast cheap food)
Vit d3 cos we live in a place with no sunlight
Vit e cos I'm spotty without it and I'm 37 so I don't want to be spotty
Fish oils cos everyone says eat loads of fish oils ( I think it's cos they're anti inflammatory
Multi vit cos it tops up everything I forgot
Glucosamine cos I'm scared my joints will wear out if I don't
Creatine cos it makes me stronger, I was away over Christmas ( three weeks ) so I wasn't getting my creatine tea ( tea with creatine dissolved in it it's a thing google it)
I didn't feel weaker at the gym in the hotel but when I got home to my gym the first week I felt weak but then I felt better after a week back on the creatine tea
Vit c cos you can't have too much

Having worked in a several prisons, they provide "Ensures" on prescription to inmates. These are meal replacement high calorie (1500 per shake) shakes not protein shakes, they are not given for muscle development but to those that need extra calories (drug addicts, the infirm etc). There is actually quite a blackmarket in the prison of inmates selling their ensures to other prisoners, so the ability to get these on a regular basis is limited. The taking of vitamins again has to be done by the medical service in the prison, inmates cannot hold tablets themselves, The doctors have better things to do than to bring inmates down to the medical wing in between sets to administer BCAA's....I would love to see the smuggling of a 5kg tub of whey. (ouch)

I think my point was too sarcastically made and people are actually going into it literally....somebody pointed out to me that these guys in prison have a high carb (meals often involve half a sliced pan of white bread), low quality protein diets and yet can keep themselves in good shape (some in amazing shape) without all the mico nutrients that are taken by us. Now fish oil and protein shakes are food that's one thing they can get that from food, ....I look on all these products with scepticism remembering that taking a water tablet will have a 20% placebo effect.
