Facebook searching cookies

    Hi All,

I have been searching for an ex wife on Facebook, to be honest I have visited her page on a number of occasions as she has been leaving me secret messages on her page. I NEED to delete all trace of this as my present gf is asking questions.(im sure this sounds funny but trust me its not, there are kids involved, and yes, I have been a p**ck)

I learned how to delete all the searches but whenever I type in the first letter of her name her profile is up straight away, how do I clear this?

Any help would be really appreciated.

    Thanks.

    Is this in Facebook search?

Perhaps Facebook uses Flash cookies? If you use Firefox there is a browser addon/extension called Better Privacy that deletes these local shared objects (
    LSO).

I'm sure someone else will have the fully correct answer but no harm in deleting the LSOs anyway. Be warned though that this will also delete many active logins.

You must have added her as a friend. Undo that in settings and then clear the LSO's?

I have never added her as a friend.

Well she must be a friend of a friend, it would be quite normal for her name to appear. Wouldn't worry about it, not much you can do. If you and GF have friends in common she might appear when she is logged on too.

    Block her

Yeah, these days on Facebook when you start typing someone's name FB tries to auto-complete by guessing names from your friend list or even friends of friends. There is probably some privacy setting buried deeply that disables this but if it's an LSO issue then using Better Privacy or a similar LSO removal tool may help...providing you don't go back to looking at that page again. If you do then you will need to run the LSO removal tool again or change the settings so that it runs every time you exit your browser.

Here, I googled LSO removal tool for you :) May or may not fix the issue.

    Thanks for the reply's.

I have tried all of the above including blocking her.

We have no mutual friends .

Facebook must have some sort of cookie that keeps a track of this.

You could also try posting here. Perhaps someone in that forum may have the answer.

Where exactly are you typing this?

Looks like you're stuck with this forum even though this is not a security issue per se. The mod in Blogs/Wiki's and Social Networks locked your thread there despite it probably being more relevant to it being a FB privacy issue.

Where it says" search for people, places and things."

As soon as I type the first letter of her name it brings up a list of people that I have previously searched for, including friends, but her name is stuck at the top of the list. I need to either delete her name or reset the entire list.

    Thanks.

Yes r3nu4l, I sent them a private message to apologise, thanks for the advise anyway.

It doesn't do that, it is making links and guessing who you are looking for. Somebody on your friend list or a friend of somebody on your friend list has befriended her. That is all that is happening, your gf will just have to understand that is how Facebook operates.

This is most likely a formula on Facebook's servers, which you cannot change, so not a cookies issue. The formula the use isn't published, but it's going to be a combination of how often you interact with them, friends you share, attributes you share... a whole myriad of things.

Having said that, if you block her (not just unfriend her) she shouldn't show up anywhere: http://www.facebook.com/settings?tab=blocking

following up on the above, to figure out if it is happening server side, try logging on to a different machine and do the first letter search thing and see if the same results.

Or even just use a different browser on the same machine :)

    Ok do this.

Facebook shows the 5 closest matches when you start typing in names, and after number 5 it says "See more results".

If your ex wife was called say Mary Murphy, search for people with similar names and click on them. For example Martin Murphy, Marty Murphy etc. That should push the ex further down the list. If you can do it right enough times, the Ex should disappear from the autocomplete list.

No-one, I just came up with the idea, but it ought to work.

    Nice idea too.

Interested to hear if it works or not. Would imagine it depends on the total amount of times the ex's page has been searched for by the op

Did you even have your status as "in a relationship" on FriendFace with this girl?
If so they no search or clearing cookies will get rid of her name, this is the kind of info they hold onto.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 432 ✭✭Kinky Slinky

If you block someone on Facebook they won't turn up on your search results.

Probably the answer. If you were ever connected before, it will bump them up to the top of your search results. I know this for a fact and has nothing to do with client side cookies.
If you block someone on Facebook they won't turn up on your search results.

Do this and block them. Simple as. If your not willing to block them then with respect you have issues deeper than social networking.

If you can't clear stuff then hide in the noise.

Or post up "I am gay" and say some of your old mates were messing with your account when you left your phone down or similar excuse
