I'm going to buy a hatchback soon - want to move up a few years.
what i'm want is something above 2005 and less then €7500. I don't do a lot of mileage, but do take long road trips to france once a year.

been looking at corrollas, astras, mazda 3s, and focuses (doesn't seem to be many decent focuses around!)

    any recommendations welcome thanks

A Kia Cee'd as ha been suggested above by another poster or a Hyundai I30. These are both the same cars mechanically and they are very reliable cars.

 I was talking about reliability, something those petrol Golfs are severly lacking in. The ''seedy KIA engine'' you refer to is a far more reliable, better designed and smoother engine than the Golfs.

Oh and your incorrect on the Golf having more ''poke'' than the Kia also.

The 1.6 engine in the car above certainly does have more poke than the KIA.

And as for reliability, I never said that KIAs aren't reliable, they are. And they are making some good cars compared to the ****e they were churning out a while ago.

But Golfs are just as reliable as a C'eed. And they are better built, look better and are a nicer place to be on the inside. Aim for a well maintained Golf, so many for sale here that just aren't looked after, same for a KIA or any car...

OP do consider the Volvos I put up there, they're great cars.

The Golf 1.6 fsi and Kia ceed 1.6 have identical 0-60 of 10.6 seconds, they also have an identical top speed of 119mph.

Now the thing is, that most golf 1.6s aren't FSI. The normal 1.6 is 102bhp and a good bit slower.

Whether a 1.6 golf is faster than a 1.4 golf is a moot point, and trying to say that the 1.4 engine in the Kia is anything but well above average for a NA engine just makes your argument for the Golf over its rivals look a bit weak.

You do know that the Kia Cee'd comes in 1.6 petrol also?
Both the 1.6 FSI Golf and Cee'd 1.6 are roughly the same in performance terms.

A petrol Golf is no where near as reliable as a Kia or infact many other mainstream brands for that matter. They aren't better built either. If they are so good you'd think VW would give you a nice 7 year warranty with them. As for the interior yes imo the Golf is better in that regard but it's still nothing special.

    I don't like them anyway
What about Mazda 3 or astra ?

The c30 looks nice but I'm guessing it has a smaller boot space than a focus or Mazda 3, I need space to fit a mountain bike inside sometimes with seats down, and I've 2 dogs
Plus the c30 is 2 litre petrol , a hard reseller , no?

The Mazda 3 are great reliable cars. You won't go far wrong with one imo. If buying just have a good look underneath for rust as this is a weak point in mazdas.

Apologies, it is broken, I think the car has been sold.

I do know that they make a 1.6, but do you know that you can get a 1.9 diesel and 2.0 diesel, and 1.8, 2.0 petrols etc in the Golf? I was talking about and comparing the cars that I had put up there, a 1.4 and a 1.6 FSI.

A car is only as good/reliable as the person who maintains it. Wish more people in this country would realise that.

That 7 year warranty is great, but its nothing to do with the reliability of their cars, it was a business decision, best way to get into the European market. Also, look at the range of cars that the two manufacturers offer, VW has a wider selection and sells more vehicles overall, again business wise offering a long warranty might cost a bit much for them...

I never said a Golf was anything special, its a good all rounder I was recommending to the OP who doesn't do alot of miles and does the odd long trip in France, which would be nicer in a Golf of one them Volvos.

The tiida diesels are the 1.5 dCi renault engine, they look great on paper, they're quite big inside and cheap, but they're a nasty yoke in the flesh.

A diesel doing low mileage isn't usually a great idea either.

I'd go for a Volvo S40. 1.6 though. More of a saloon I suppose, but very practical and a tidy size. The difference is tax is only €150 per year. Economy and insurance would be the same.

A lot of those S40's come in high spec - leather seats etc. Based on the Ford Focus platform too, so serving and parts are cheap.

I see, we Irish are still completely obsessed with engine cc size. :)

You know, I did put a 1.6 there aswell, and two other cars. A 1.4 would be grand for alot of people, who don't really care what or how they drive.

I never said it would blow the socks off you...

Sorry to hijack thread, can i ask which size engine in the civic did u find best?

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 3,305 ✭✭✭Green Hornet

The 2.2 diesel is quite a nippy bus and the 1.8 petrol is nippy too while delivering 40mpg.

The 1.4 is dead as a dodo though.......but I think Honda added VTEC to the 1.4 in 2010 or so and that improved it.

I know the OP is looking for something older but just answering the previous poster.

i found the 1.4 slightly underpowered, the 1.8 is a great engine and a great ride and more fun to drive than the 2.2 diesel, but the diesel has grown on me.dont need to work the gears as hard as the 1.8 and getting 60mpg:D

Out of those I'd have the first one. Try and gt a few quid off, but its a superior car to the mazda3 and the base spec on the corolla is pretty poor so I'd rule out the other corollas on that basis.

    That Civic looks good.
Dont know if they have a timing belt, I know the VTECs have a chain, but not sure about the 1.4

It's in a different league to a Mazda3 to be fair.

Thanks guys , what I'm after is a reliable hatchback , for space I just pull the front wheel off my bike so that's not a big deal, and two small dogs will fit in most boots :) , just can't afford to blow 6000 or 7000 and wind up with a ball of .....
If I'm gonna spend the money I want a hassle free car for 3 yeaes. I've seen a few 1.6 petrol focuses , have we ruled them out ? I wouldn't touch a 1.4 drove one before and kept looking for another gear
