The very first single I bought by myself was Kiss - Crazy Nights :) It was a 45 rpm 7" record. At that time I was only really beginning to take notice of music and I loved the energy of this song. Eventually I became embarrassed about my choice but I've come full circle again and now the song evokes happy memories for me :)

The first album I bought was Iron Maiden's Live after death, the double cassette, recorded live on tour. I practically wore the tape out listening to this.

    What about you?

Not telling. You'll take the pi55! If I could go back and change them, one of my choices would be the same as yours, but I'm not saying which...

Hint. I've never bought a single.

    Other hint. I hate Kiss.

    Ok. Mine was MJ's Thriller.

The first single and album that I asked for are really fuqin embarassing, but here goes - The Helicopter Song by The Wolfe Tones, sorry, but I was very young and didn't understand anything. The album was, *cringe*, by Gary Glitter, can't remember the title. If I could only turn back time....

First album bought with my own earned money was News of the World by Queen. I never bought singles much.

First Concert? - Well that's a bit better - Led Zeppelin Knebworth '79.

Single: Ultravox : Vienna. I bought four singles together, can't remember the other 3 !

Album: ZZ Top, Eliminator. Well it was a tape and there was always the hope that they'd land outside my door some day with some of the women from the video. :o I still have the tape in the box with the inlay card.

Jeez am I feeling ancient - but way back in 1973 when the ripe old age of 9, I bought my first "pop" record - it was a compilation album of chart songs called "Unreal", released by K-Tel (I grew up in Aussie, until I was 12). I loved that album and still treasure it.

And as the years went by I always chose albums because several songs would be released as singles - so it was better value - and so many of them had posters inside, song sheets you could read without a magnifying glass :D.

Mind you in the mid 80's I was a DJ and used to buy loads of singles every week but just can't recall ever buying a single when I was a kid.

Still have all my vinyl, singles and albums - and wouldn't part with them and scratchy sounds for the world.

Ha ha, a sales assistant with a great sense of humour :D I got that album on tape too, for my birthday. In fairness it's a classic album and listening to it made me go and buy the rest of their back catalogue on tape.

Also, 9959, I love Bing's Christmas tunes :) Was that the album Merry Christmas that was later renamed White Christmas?

Yes, it was retitled 'White Christmas' in the mid-eighties, record company merger/takeover or some such nonsense.
In my opinion Bing was the greatest crooner of all time, I would make a distinction between crooning and singing, therefore I would nominate Frank (Sinatra) as the greatest ever singer, for the uninitiated I would highly recommend 'Songs For Swingin' Lovers!', classic songs beautifully sung by Frank with fantastic arrangements by Nelson Riddle.

Haha you're welcome, I probably bought the single (or rather got my brother to go to the shop and get it for me!) on the strength of that performance, although it has a weird beat, at least it was kind of quirky and unconventional.

Top of the Pops of that era was full of quality music, we were lucky to live through that time. Imagine if your formative years were during the Kylie/Jason/Bros era? gah :D

I remember buying a 'Shadows' single at a jumble sale when I was very small, I think it might have been a tune called 'FBI' or something like that anyway.

It was years later when I bought my first album, a vinyl double LP which I still have - Billy Joel's Greatest Hits Vol 1 & 2 - sometime around 1985 I reckon.
