    Hi,
Have to get a car asap, have €2800 to spend max but would prefer to spend less if possible. I've been looking for the past few weeks but there seems to be few diesels with an up to date nct. Have had so much trouble and cost with my old car that I'd like to buy something that won't cause me much hassle or money for the next year anyway. Work is an hour away - all motorway. I like the Mazda 6, volvo or Santa fe but open to any suggestions -1.9l max. Please help!!!

Telling the OP to avoid Volvo and to buy a Vauxhall is utter crap. Are you sure it wasn't supposed to be the other way around?

OP, buy a Volvo. Great cars. And you won't look like every other guy with his common as muck cars like Astra, Focus etc.:)

My parents have 2 there is nothing wrong with to drive. At the end of the day the op has 2.8k to spend you can only get so much for that and I can think of alot worse than a skoda.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 57 ✭✭niallkkk

theyre gr8 cars but they have become overpriced.taxis use them a lot(diesel ones) thats why they fetch good money

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 871 ✭✭✭TPM

you may not get as new as an octavia as you will some other cars for the same money. this is because they hold their value well.
maybe this because they are expensive to run and keep breaking down:P
IMO that vw engine is one of the most durable reliable engines around, the Octavia is one of the cheapest ways of getting it.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 57 ✭✭niallkkk

are they not nearl same price as vw at this stage?

Funnily enough I have an astra van too serious room in the back I had half a Ton of laminate flooring in the back of mine last week(600 square foot) no hassle at all it wasn't even half full. Some how I don't think the op will go for an astra van. And i wouldnt recommend an old model astra petrol to anyone.

From what Ive seen the VW are still more expensive sometimes it may not be alot but there seems to be better value in skoda over VW specially in the OP'S budget.
Saying that If he comes across a VW in his budget I would recommend that too

i love mine.the wife takes the piss cos it looks like a greyhound van(cos of grid on back window).the five grwyhounds was a joke but i can fit a 2 seater sofa.

My father recommends small economical Japanese cars. My sister in law (is the only one of us who) always takes his advice and brings him car shopping :D In fairness, she spends only 2 to 3 grand on a car, she has never had a breakdown, drives over 100km every weekday and finds them cheapest to run.

work 1 hour away on motorway might be worth looking at smaller engine petrol cars, big motor tax saving ?

Yeah, BMW engine, with a Mitsubishi turbo and no swirl flaps, more durable than the BMW setup IMO

When my dad had his mg he use to buy all the parts in the uk and have them sent over. There is few mg mechanics left going around now alright but I'm sure a good independant would be fine. I know youngs in Kilkenny still have all the mg equipment and still service mg as they were originally a rover dealer and still sell land rover. Not sure about the Dublin and other areas.

    is it worth the hassle???
is it more of an enthusiasts car?

Do you reckon with this sort of money (i.e.) the €2500 - €3000 mark if there is any benefit of buying from a dealer??

I've just never considered buy private tbh, just because my dad always advised against it.
But most dealers are selling 'as is' at that price anyway right???

EDIT: ( I ask this cos all suggestions were from donedeal straight away :) )

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 11 Padraicw

Like the look of the MG. would consider the Octavia too. My wife has a passat, great power but lots of trouble with sensors etc. thanks.

Few dealers will give a warranty I a 3k car. Generally when buying at this price you will get a way better deal buying privately.

I thought so, so what if any benefit is there to buying from a dealer then....
(At that price of course, and Sorry to de-rail the topic, its just I'm in the market for around the same price at the moment. :P )

I know a lad who had ECU and injector pump problems with a rover 75 and was a nightmare

At that budget you wont really be dealing with main dealers more likely small independent car traders. on that fact I would buy private at least yo uknow where you stand warranty wise and will probably buy a good bit cheaper

Its a rover 75 basically. It's not as if a mechanic won't be able to service or repair it.
