Why would they? Where do you draw the line? Walkers? Skateboarders? Drivers? Pilots? FFS.

Well let's try this. When you're out running, do you nod to all walkers? If not why not? Why are you so sportist?

Besides, we don't even like triathlonists!

We have spent more money on our equipment than you have. Why on earth should we even look your way?

I dunno...a runner stepped out on the road yesterday in the Phoenix park without realising I was behind him, he gave me an apologetic wave, I waved back, everyone's happy....

What if they were just commuting, would they still get a wave? How about walking to the shops?
Seriously, if you're able to keep track of who has or hasn't waved back, you're not running fast enough.

Is there something special about exercising which requires acknowledgment?

Do you acknowledge fellow patrons when you walk into the chipper?

"Good day, sirs. I too am indulging in a little not-really-cod and chips treat."

I cycle and run up and down Howth and only ever get acknowledgement from cyclists when I'm cycling and runners when I'm running.

Sometimes I'll even cycle out there and run up the hill in a cycling jersey, still nothing from the roadies.

Not sure what you mean. I acknowledge runners every day. "Get off the fookin' cycle track you dumb cnut!" is my usual salutation.
In this instance I'm willing to settle for "Hi!".
    Hi!

I think runners hate them fooken aul.ones with the ten meter leash as much as cyclists hate us :'(

I give the little one finger wave to cyclists coming the other direction. If I'm catching someone going the same way as me I'll bust myself to catch them and then sit up and cruise by with a nonchalant 'keep her lit!' as if I'm making no effort. Very satisfying. Hard to be casual when running as I'm usually in a state of some distress to begin with so I don't bother.

I'm currently in a service station in England and they're just as ignorant over here. I must have walked past more than 20 people walking in the other direction, and not one of them even acknowledged me, let alone waved. Anyway I got my own back by ignoring every one of them...

Me and my OH hired a vintage VW Campervan a couple of years ago and drove around Cornwall, we got flashes, toots and some manic waves from other VW Campervan drivers as we passed each other.
Never got any such acknowledgement from other motorhome drivers - so it's a 'same' thing.
You also see motorcyclists giving each other the nod.

As for cyclists, when I'm out on a cycle at the weekend, I've noticed half of passing cyclists will nod, half won't.

As I've said before, there are places you can go if you wanna be waved at all day.

I met a lone runner up near the back of the reservoir near Roundwood on Sunday, loping along in the driving sleet. That's a hardy man I thought. Fair play. I'll give him a shout.

He jumped out of his skin when I said hi and nearly fell in a ditch. I was ashamed and resolved then and there to never hail anyone from the bike again.

I should probably go and join Orwell now.

They wouldn't have you now that you've publicly admitted hailing a mouth-breather.

6 of my 8 crashes have been directly attributable to the irresistable urge I get to wave to other cyclists and road users when on the bike. I think this may be a syndrome of some sort.

I have been known to wave to those using other methods of transport, but only if it can be described as "training" or "sport". Joggers regularly receive my acknowledgement, particularly if they are struggling, or putting in a great effort, I ignore those runners who look lean, tanned and effortless - I put this down to jealously.

I holler at those riding horses, but that is for a different reason altogether.

If I was you, I would check that one of them hasn't nicked your wallet and is pretending to be nonchalant.

I love to nonchalantly run alongside slow cyclists. You just gradually creep up on them util they realise you're there and get a fright. They usually accelerate away then out of shame.

My friend and I did a test whilst out on our spin on Saturday morning, nodding/waving to every cyclist that passed, with only 1 in 3 acknowledging. As a result, I'm now less likely to give the nod!

And I'm usually cycling too fast to acknowledge runners....

When I see a runner/jogger, I usually think to myself 'if they worked really hard, they too could some day buy a bicycle', and until that day comes I won't acknowledge them....I see it as a form of encouragement for them to work harder....

I was travelling on the Naul to Balbriggan road on Saturday morning and met a very friendly group spread out over a few kms heading the other way. I nodded at each of them as I met them but it became a bit tedious after a while.

For the record, no one, not one pedestrian jogger or cyclist passed one audible comment to me as I was fixing a puncture at Guinness on the quays on the way home (18:00).
Got back on the road in double quick time.

Walked to tesco to get a sliced pan this afternoon, picked up a brennans white sliced pan, got the nod off a similar sliced pan buyer, even though he was buying a Johnston Mooney and O'Brien brown sliced pan, seems there is a sense of camaraderie between bread buyers.....little did he know I was also a cyclist in disguise....

Us McCambridge men wouldn't be caught dead nodding.

Proper road cyclists are thin on the ground so it is only right to give a courteous greeting when another fellow enthusiast (sufferer?) hoves in view. I try and nod/say hello to most riders I pass, and probably get a response 50% of the time.
