As per the title, a sky rep rang me about 30 minutes ago and offered me the HD sub for €5 a month for 12 months. Seems like a good enough deal.

EDIT- the rep MAY have offered if to me on the basis of me having a HD box.

Did they offer you a new HD box?

I still have the old white non-HD Sky+ box and would consider HD for a fiver if they gave me the latest box.

No although the girl did say that she could see I have a HD box so perhaps it's only to people who have them?

I assume you're out of your original 12 month contract? Just get someone else in the house to sign up as a new customer and you'll get a free hd+box, most offers have free standard installation too.

Still quite shocking that they are charging extra for HD channels, but whatever....

Worth it if you watch the F1 anyway. BBC are only showing 10 races live this year and a HD sub gets you the sky F1 channel.

What channels will the €5 extra per month get you? Is it the "Sky Entertainment HD Channels" pack @ http://www.sky.com/products/ways-to-watch/sky-plus-hd/index-roi.html

you will receive some of the HD channels without a sub
one or two of the BBC channels & of the ones listed on that link RTÉ2HD (ch115) is not dependent on a sub

plus you can add some HD channels yourself:

I left them a year ago - the hd charge has always been the deal breaker when they have called me. Even €5 is too much

Well I took up the offer and was told the following-

It is only available to certain accounts that already have a HD box (although I'd imagine that if someone rang and said they wanted it sky would jump at them)

It is for 12 months and cannot be changed, although every other aspect of your sub can be.

Tbh it's worth it for me, I watch a lot of the stuff on e4, sky 1, universal and Atlantic.

As a side note the HD versions replace the SD in the EPG, so rte 2 HD is 102, sky 1 HD is 106 etc, except for e4 strangely.

So just to clarify? If I am on the the entertainment pack, I can pay €5 extra per month and get the f1 hd channel (and some other stuff) even though I dont have sports or movie pack? I would love to see all races live.

any money is too much for a HD sub. I have the movies and sport, and that is costing enough. HD should be standard at this stage.

I got this as well because it allows access to Sky Sports F1, which otherwise you would have to pay for the Sports package. €fiver a month for that and the HD pack is ok value.

I have diaried it for 12 months time as they told me the HD sub would go back up to €15 then. Will be pulling the plug on it then. €15 is looney money.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,003 ✭✭✭JDxtra

I would consider €5 - €7 a reasonable amount for the HD sub. €15 is too much.

To make the HD pack part of the basic cost, they would have to increase the cost of the basic pack. Many would not want that.

The only reason why we have many HD channels on Sky is because they have subsidised them. Even ITV (in the UK) claimed they couldn't afford HD equivalents of their ITV2/3/4 channels. Then Sky did a deal with them, and voila. Albeit with an exclusivity clause of course!

The HD sub is €15 I thought it was only €9.50.
Time to ring sky me thinks

It sounds like they are talking s**** and making up their deals as they go along. I've been on €5 HD since December 2011.

HD should really be free at this stage

I was told when I ordered the Broadband that I could avail of this. I only have the old white box I was asking could he do me a deal too, said I'd get the new HD box, €30 installation which is a joke... and a fiver a month. Said deal is open till end of March.

Rang today to cancel HD and got Multoroom and HD for €20 for 12 months (€10 saving p/m). This offer was given straight away no hassle

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 9,010 ✭✭✭Soups123

Just an FYI, I got this deal today.

Simply rang the number, said I had spoken with Sky last week as I was considering a switch to UPC and that at the time I was offered HD for €5, I advised I would consider and call back and here I am. No problem sir the upgrades team will call you back, 5 minutes later all done.

also got a saving on my overall package from the cancelation team. sweet

Yes I got the f1 hd channel via hd subscription last year. Its well worth 60 for the f1 for the year at 5 per month but I got it free last year for 6 months.

Same as myself on a rolling contract since last sept

€72 for all channels and hd and multi room but no movies there's probably better out there

Just rang to look for a 'what can you do for me' on my monthly bill of €91.

Operators said... nothing he can do. So I said 'drop the HD sub ' and that'll save me €15 per month. Put through to cancellations and on asking to cancel the HD - was offered it at €7.50 for next 12 months!

Happy (ish) out for moment...I know the wife would have liked Multi Room. Probably should have pushed for a deal on that. Maybe next week- i make another call based on what I read here!!!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 26,167 ✭✭✭✭Berty

I rang them up, got 20% off my TV so now only €27 and got them after that to add the €5 HD sub to it so I'm still getting €2 less for the next 12 months. Top this up with the €322 saving I'm making moving my Vodafone Landline & Broadband to them and it has been a good week to do business with Sky. :D

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 207 ✭✭after_shock3000

Just got it there for the 5 euro too. Seems they can pick and choose their prices going by what I've read here anyway. I've no doubt that if I go to cancel the HD in 12 months time they'll off the fiver deal again.

I remember reading on her that there was a big difference depending on which call centre you got routed to. AFAIK the Scottish centre was more likely to offer a deal than the Irish one.

Anybody get a deal off the Irish centre?

She was definately Irish and the Customer retention guy was Irish as well yesterday. Other girl then who sold me the broadband was based in Ireland, not Irish granted.

I rang 0818 719 834 for upgrades. Got Irish center and they give me upgrade to HD for 5 a month. 30 Euro for installation and New Box free. Without 5 euro for 12 months is was going to cost me 289 euro for box and installation.

A couple of years ago I wanted to add Sky to another room in my house and I availed of the offer they had at the time of a Sky HD installation and they would move the old box to another room for no installation charge, plus a ten day 'cooling off' period where I could cancel the HD if I didn't like it.
To be honest, I wasn't 'blown away' by HD, I could see the difference in quality but I just didn't think it was worth the €15 a month extra for it. Within a couple of days I rang up to cancel the HD and I was immediately put through to the 'disconnection team' (or whatever they were called), I then had some salesman try to 'hard sell' me the HD, insisting I stuck out the full trial to watch as many HD programs as possible so that I could 'come to love it'.
I stood my ground and insisted I didn't want it, not because it was no good but simply because I thought it wasn't worth paying anything extra for, I told them that I thought they should be offering that quality of TV as standard not charging extra for a better picture. In the end he gave up and simply switched off the HD, leaving me with the new HD box and the multiroom installation for no cost...:)

I occasionally watch the odd football match on ITV HD and a few other HD programs on the free HD channels but I still refuse to pay anything extra for HD, if enough people did this they would eventually be forced to provide it as standard.

The trick is going to cancelation team, reason for leaving say 'purely cost', almost certain to get a 20-25% reduction, going through to up grades or customer service will get you limited discount.

To be fair to sky, I was stunned that they offered the f1 channel as part of the hd pack. I mean they could have stung all the f1 fans for sky sports subscription.

Called yesterday, spoke to an English girl who said the deal was over, rest she could offer was 7.50p/m for eight months.

Chanced the arm today again, got a Derry man, fiver for hd for twelve months.

Another reason I like dealing with Sky.

I rang this morning to cancel our Sky HD and to discuss how we can save money on our monthly bill. I was immediately offered 20% off our Entertainment and Sports package plus half price Multiroom X 2 for 12 months. This equates to a saving of €31.40 per month or €376.80 over 12 months. I accepted the offer ....... and we still have HD!!

I found the cancellation department to be very helpful, they went out of their way to help us save money. They even said if after 12 months is up to contact them again and they will see what they can do.

Also, the above savings are in addition to the savings of €342 over 12 months we will make by transferring to Sky for phone and Broadband.

So, our total savings on TV, Phone and Broadband over the next 12 months will be €718.80!! Thank you Sky. :D

    Sorry for delayed reply.

This is what I did (and it worked no prob)

Called up the normal Sky number, when given the options, select 'something isn't working'.

When operator picks up, I told him, eh.... Yeah I signed up for that €5 a month HD sub last week, but I'm still not receiving any HD channels

The operator said he'd have a look at the acc, said it doesn't look like it was activated, to which I said some one from Sky rang me at dinner time and asked if I'd like to upgrade for the fiver, I said yeah I'd love to, them I said the operator said as I was eating my dinner he'd call back, but I assumed it was all up and running?

He said no bother, I'll activate it now!

    A white lie harmed no-one. ;)
