Well we all know in Health & Fitness food is key to whatever your goals are, whether it be bodybuilding, powerlifting, weight loss or whatever you need to eat!

So I think this thread might be a good idea for people to post possible bargains for good quality food and what prices you bought them at. Cause lets face it, if you can eat healthy for cheaper, you're going too.

Foods can include anything from meats to fruit/vege or whatever you feel necessary!

there's a great post in Bargain Alerts most weeks on the Aldi super 6 and the fruit and veg offers in the other supermarkets as well:

    http://m.boards.ie/vbulletin/showthread.php?goto=newpost&t=2056854015

I got a butternut squash and veg mix for soup (carrot, onion, swede, celery) for 79c each in Aldi.

  • Fruit/Veg from the supermarkets selling below cost.

Meat from your local butcher (buy the specials and use your freezer).

Pasata (not pasta) sauce, is like 40c in Aldi, savage for making your own healthy pasta or chicken sauces with. Basically it's crushed tomatoes, the sauce thats on any pizza base.

True but considering I use circa 7 eggs a day it can get expensive throughout the week.

Saw a close-up video on Youtube yesterday of a hen laying an egg... It was interesting to say the least

Is it true that you're better off not washing eggs until they're ready to be cooked (assuming you haven't bought from a store)? I seem to recall reading something about a protective coating being removed when cleaned...

Big 500g tub of Greek Yoghurt in Aldi, only 99 cents or something like that. It lasts for a whole week to put on fruit or whatever for breakfast.

Also, their tins of mixed beans and really cheap too.

By and large, eggs are NOT washed. Maybe 1to2% need washing.

I see Tesco do their own porridge oats for less than half the price of branded ones. Reading the nutritional information they seem identical to me.

Does anyone use them or know if they are the same as branded ones?

I got 2 2kg bags of oats for 4 euro in dealz on William street, Limerick. Flavahans stuff, it was beautiful. I'll definitely be topping up when I'm in next.

Porridge,Eggs and Veg in Aldi are generally really cheap.

Also for those who like them those salad/baby potatoes are great for those who want to cut down on the spud without giving them up,bags of them are pretty cheap though small but portion them and you will be fine..

A butcher in my town sells chicken breasts for 1euro each on a Monday so we usually get 8/10 a week

Jeez I wish a butcher round here would sell them that cheap. Are they of good quality?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 114 ✭✭baz15

Dunnes do a good 3 for €9 offer on some of their meats. Theres a fairly good selection, chicken breasts, mince, turkey, salmon and a few more. Keeps me fed for a few days anyway

boscos in carlow do 5 good sized chicken breasts for 7 euro. I normally get a full chicken from tesco or superquinn depending on which is cheapest, rip all the meat off and just use that in stir frys but I think I'll pay the euro or two extra from now on and get the chicken breasts. better quality stuff i'd imagine and no big messy carcass to throw away every 4 days. The 5 breasts works perfectly into the 5:2 fasting too and each meal will have more 'standardised' amounts of chicken in it rather than eyeballing shredded chicken lumps out of the bowl in the fridge.

10 breasts for €10 in most butchers in cork too. I get mine in Wilton

This is mostly for the people of Limerick reading but Dealz on William Street is a brilliant place to pick up a few bits.

Got 2kg of Flavahans oats for 2euro there a few weeks ago. Got a 1.5kg bag of them for 1.49 in there also. Dunnes in the parkway are doing a deal on Flavahans oats the same that Dealz had on- 2euro for 2kg. Lovely oats too.

Got 8 food storage containers for 1.49 in Dealz also.

Picked up Sultanas also in Dunnes for 1.25.

Anyway, if you're ever passing Dealz or the other 1.50 shop on William Street definitely pop in, you'll save yourself on stuff if not food, loads of other stuff.

why are they better than farmed?

Farmed salmon contains excessive levels of fat, wild salmon contains 20% more protein.

Despite being much fattier, farmed fish provide less usable beneficial omega 3 fats than wild fish and much higher amounts of pro-inflammatory omega 6 fats.
Farmed fish are exposed to anti-biotics and much more concentrated pesticides and is actually dyed a pink salmon colour, as otherwise apparently it would be grey. Some more info here: http://www.whfoods.com/genpage.php?tname=george&dbid=96

Those Tesco fillets are delicious, give them a go if you like fish.
They seem to fluctuate the price of them from 50% to 100%, but in my experience they are usually 50%, when they are not, there is another Tesco owned brand that do the same product in a different packaging for the 50% price.
