Anyone know whats the reason for switching from 8.5 driver to 9.5. Seems a major change to me for someone who has a very high ball flight as it is.

I assume it is the one which suited him best.

He said it was 10.5 in the neutral position at his press conference. Keeping the same shaft he's used since the Open.

He's supposed to be getting £150 million over 10 years. Handy money for using the clubs and doing a few commercials and the like.

He still had the Scotty Cameron in his bag the other day when practicing.

I was surprised by it and assumed it would be a Nike putter.

According to the article in the Indo (i think!) he has been alternating between both putters...

How could Nike be allowing this???

Tigers uses a Scotty Cameron also...

I think the deal is bigger than what putter he uses...its more important that he still wins (whilst covered in swooshes) than he uses all swooshes and doesnt win diddly squat.

    I suppose so!

Can't wait for Abu Dhabi next week now. Hope it's not a anti climax. I've never been this excited about a year of golf before.

    Rory on too form
Tiger potentially getting back to his best
    Padraig doing well
The chasing pack all well capable of beating anyone on their day

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,098 ✭✭✭Johnny_Fontane

I have a feeling that Tiger could roar back into action this year.....

3 wins last year, no.2 in the world going in.....could be some nice prices at the bookies to be had!

"I visited The Oven and I was seriously impressed with both the craftsmanship of the Nike club engineers and how much R&D and product innovation goes on there," McIlroy said. "I've been blown away by the attention to detail when it comes to product."

I don't think any less of him for going to Nike or anything, but I can't help but cringe reading quotes like the one above. I'd say he'll get an extra 10 yards per year from their drivers as well. And probably from their irons too. And sure, maybe even the method putter will give him an extra 10 yards!

Pretty certain he was using a Nike putter last year.

And don't forget the free golf balls ;););););):D

I've heard he will be using the Method putter and that for now the Scotty is history. Nike drove a hard bargain in that regard albeit they are giving him a shedload of dosh. I'd have thought Rory would have got to keep the putter he's been using and improving with.

For the last line in the add Rory should have said.

"Where, in Vegas?" With cheeky Irish grin .

    Funny add.

Just don't think Rory needs Tiger.

Nike's priority was getting the world number 1 signed long term......they knew when they first signed Woods that he'd be no 1 or close to it for a decade or more......it's the same situation now with Rory

I'm sure they were willing to make this concession to get his name on a contract.

It may also be a phasing out thing, Nike want Rory winning, I'm sure if he said that changing his putter right before the season would throw his game off, that Nike would allow him to use it and gradually get used to his new Nike putter before using it in competition.

And he now only has one sponsor that he has to do Corporate days for, instead of the 4/5 or so that he originally had.

Why would Rory going to Nike be good for the fans? It's good for his pocket, and Nike, but that's it.

Yes , you could see it in his face, did one of his look up to the heavens . Not the start he or Nike wanted - a bit easier if he was underpar - this is when he is in tiger's world and can't just walk, about 1 hours worth of **** questions about clubs.

Anyway , hard for him to get ready for this with the week of fanfare.

I'm going to fall into my own trap - :D

Changing from a Titlesit driver has to be a bit of an adjustment - but we will see. Even I would not play a Nike driver :p

The head of one driver is similar to another. It's all in the shaft and he's keeping his old shaft.

Similar, not the same - nothing like the same at 120 mph.

    LOL.

I think Rory is great when talking naturally , was listening to him today, just something odd about him talking the Nike ****e. You know they are just lines.
He seemed new to this bull talk - he is.

    I guess money talks.

Ah I was referring to the nike shoes, nike hat, nike Driver, nike nike nike, but then he played terribly.

Just a small jab at players I see on course who step up with all the gear but then can't hit a ball out of their way! Makes me smile.

i suppose Woods, cink, glover, immelman, schwartzl were all full of it I suppose....Nike make great equipment for pros, but I suppose if thats not good enough for some amateurs, you're welcome to your opinion

I think we are mixing two issues - Rory has to get use to changing clubs (Yes), they spoke to top pros about it on the range, actually way bigger issue than I would have expected, after listening to D. Clarke, J.M Olazabal.

Rory has to talk about nike in a forced way from now on - (yes) part of the deal.

I just don't like forced corporate speak from sports people - yes, my opinion. We are allowed to listen and make our own call on that. I don't have to believe the hype.

Again, I like Rory fair play to him - but I'm not into the Nike Crap.

think about it from rorys perspective too.....being sponsored by

jumeirah, lough erne, audemars pichet, oakley, footjoy etc etc .....

how many different sponsors days/ads etc is he going to have to do, worrying about a load of contracts, keeping everyone happy etc...

total no brainer - watch it fail :P

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,626 ✭✭✭rockonollie

There's also news coming out now that Rory and Tiger filmed seperately.....of course due to "scheduling conflicts"

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 1,142 ✭✭✭Pilsbury Doughboy

Just saw a clip on SSN now apparently he's driving it alot shorter? Can that be easily remedied I wonder?

    LOL,

If you think Rory is getting it handy for $250 mil , you are having a laugh.

Every bloody half executive from Nike in every bloody region, will want a piece of him.

Anyway, best of luck to him, loved it when he was raw and spoke his mind,
Hoplefully he does not end up tierd of it all and monosyllabic like Tiger by the time he was 30.

I'm going to hold off jumping to conclusions......it is only the start of the season, and with new clubs.

There's alot of possibilities.....most lilkely that he is holding back just a little while he gets comfortable.

Rory losing 10 yards off his drive still has him near the top of the pack in driving distance and won't destroy his game

Exactly......i hit the course for the first time of the year, and the first time in 3 months yesterday.

Only hitting 50% FIR for the season......guess it's time to retire!

Surely Rory has spanked 1000's of golf balls with this Driver, It's not like he's ice cold with it

I disagree wholeheartedly. Nike manage their athletes better than anyone else, and there is no way that Mcilroy is going to have to do anywhere near the amount of press and promotion work than he did for the 6/7 companies he previously worked with.

Hes now a mega star and he calls the shot to a certain degree. This is going to be much cleaner and nike will give the space he needs to succeed.
