Do they just stay online ALL THE TIME so no one can post anything bad without them quickly deleting it? When do they sleep?

They have pagers that go MENTAL whenever certain trace words/phrases are posted.

I use a bot account to check for flirting and anyone implying I'm overweight. It hasn't worked yet... apart from randomly banning people for no reason.... But it's still running and nobody's noticed yet.

Thesaurus is a tool mandatory for embarking on a rampage of bitter abuse towards fellow boardsees.

OP has his answers. All very good ones too.

He should now allow the Moderators to ask questions about him.

I love that rare time late at night when the mods are gone to sleep, there's a good crowd and everyone's a bit wired and we do what we like with no immediate consequences.

It's a bit like when the rents are gone and you crack into their stash of drink with a few mates... Ah good times :D

Why don't you and your mates just buy your own drink?

Oh right. Because you're apparently a child.

    Ha ha.

This is a good synopsis of their role from wikipedia:
They are sentient computer programs, displaying high-level Artificial Intelligence, and are representatives, or "Agents", mods, of the main antagonists within the Matrix boards.ie. They are guardians within the computer-generated world of the Matrix boards.ie. Something akin to the anti-virus of the Matrix boards, guarding it from anyone or anything (most often Redpills trolls) that could reveal it as a false reality or threaten it in any other way. Agents Mods also hunt down and terminate any rogue programs posters, such as The Keymaker, which no longer serve a purpose to the overall Machine collective. They appear physically human, but have a tendency to speak and act in highly precise and mechanical ways.

    The actual answer is this:
when you report a post, warning klaxons alert some of us. "us" being the whipping boys for the mods.
Then, we wake the mods. If it's worth a ban, the user gets banned and we get fed for the day. If the user doesn't get banned, we get whipped, repeatedly, with a whip made of diamond and on fire.

So please, report only posts that are worth a banning.

It's an unusual situation really. The mods are employees for Daft Media but seem quite happy to be spending their time working for free. What makes people want to do it?

Seen it on the news recently that tax inspectors in the UK are investigating Goal.com for the use of free labour. Goal required match reports to be submitted and again people were willing to spend their time doing it for free.
"HMRC ensure that businesses comply with the national minimum wage rules across the board, and where we believe these rules are being abused, we will not hesitate in investigating further. Where we receive information of possible [national minimum wage] abuse, we will always analyse it to identify anyone breaking the law."

The law might differ here. I'm not sure.

What is it that makes people happy to be doing these things for free?

    They're not employees, they're volunteers.
And that thing about Goal being investigated?
What's the point in referencing that? It's not like Boards can be investigated for it. No one is forced to be a mod. They're asked if they'd like to do it and they oblige willingly. There's no slave labour involved!

Same with Goal. No one is forcing their employees/volunteers to do it but people are more than happy.
Tax inspectors had a look and said wait a minute, these guys are working for you and you are not complying with the minimum wage.

(I'm not saying for a second boards should be investigated or anything like that. Anyway I think the definition of volunteers in the UK and Ireland may differ to Daft Media's benefit.)

Many people appreciate boards.ie and all the years of enjoyment it has given them. And so they like to help out...to give something back.

I've been a mod on other forums, and even a Moderator Manager at one point...and I loved it. But it can take up quite a bit of time...depending on how well behaved the members are. :D

A few years ago who my roster was all over the palace. I would often go on boards very early on a Sunday morning, after doing this for a while I realised that there are some people who are determined to put their.. "unusual ideas" out there..... and had picked early Sunday morning in the hopes that the site was not moderated at certain times. This has not happened in a long time so Boards seem to have fixed this problem.

Internet forum modding is one of those endeavors that makes me wonder am I a member of the same species as these people. Instead of kicking back and having a laugh, they seek to be unpaid policemen, virtually cuffing perps who break laws such as failing to read charters and shutting down illegal rackets such as starting numerous stupid threads. Just goes to show, people will hunger for any kind of power, no matter how tiny and irrelevant it is.

But then again, you wouldn't be able to kick back and enjoy boards.ie without moderators because it'd become a sprawling sh*teheap of spam bots and petty squabbles.

So these 'sub-humans' you look down on so actually allow you to enjoy the site.

    Weird ain't it?
