Protein alternative to tuna?

I'm going to probably be searching for an impossible solution here but basically I have a salad most days for my lunch at work.
It consists of lettuce, small tin of tuna and cottage cheese. I love the tuna but I know I'm eating to much of it and am conscious of the mercury issue.

So basically I'm looking for an alternative, low cal if possible, to the tuna that will still be quite high in protein. I have tried egg whites hardboiled but I found it a serious waste of food (in terms of throwing the yolk away)

I've investigated salmon and it's only slightly higher in cals but 5/6 grams less of protein!

Sorry I sound so fussy, I'm just very conscious of my macros at the moment and keeping carbs down and my protein up (while still watching cals!)

    chicken ?

Go for smaller fish that show smaller signs of bio accumulation of mercury - mackerel, sardines, salmon, haddock etc.

Peanut butter, chicken, chick peas etc.

    Liquid egg whites?

Thanks Stench Blossoms, I was considering buying them but scrambled eggs isn't that pleasant an accompaniment to salad for my taste buds! They're not readily available where I live either, but thanks!

    chicken ?
Just thought of this this evening alright. Again, convenience is taking over but I could buy cooked chicken packs maybe? I think the protein levels are only slightly less

Don't think peanut butter would mix well with the aul lettuce ;)

Thanks for the fish suggestions though!

Any other ideas! Thanks for all so far!

It may not be convenient - But you could buy pre diced meat such as Chicken, Turkey, Pork or Beef and quickly fry it up in the morning and pop into your lunch box with the salad. Shouldn't take long to cook.

For something more convenient you could stick to the tinned fish - But aim for a fish lower in the food chain. Generally the lower they are in the food chain, the lower levels of mercury they have. Tinned sardines for example. Or if you could find precooked shrimp or crab.

why not Chicken or turkey. Perfect balance of protein and fat and convenience. Put the meat on the grill while you chop your salad. Slice it into the container and you're done. Added benefit of having more of a variation of meals too as both are quite flexible when it comes to spice and herbs and salad to go with it. Had a nice chicken avocado and mango salad in work instead of tuna the other day.
You can always grill a batch for 3/4 days if you want to.

Also what about Rabit? Some butchers will get it for you if you give them notice. It's lovely meat

Thanks for all the suggestions everyone!

I've gone with chicken breasts! Got 5 for a fiver and cooked two there this evening when I'd oven on! So they're ready to go!

Any idea how long they'll last in the fridge for? A day? two days?

I wouldn't go more than two, maybe three days. If you don't plan on using them right away, just freeze them. Invest in small sandwich bags and pop one breast into a bag and freeze away.

Also, you probably got all 5 in one bag from your butcher. Don't store them like this. It's recommended to store them on a plate and cover with tin foil.

FYI, I usually boil 3-4 chicken breasts at a time and keep them in a sealed box in the fridge in the same water they were cooked in, to keep them moist. I put in enough water to cover all the breasts, add a teaspoon of vegetable bouillone or stock cube and leave it covered at medium heat for 20 mins.

I would use 1 a day so they last up to 3 days if stored above and they've never started to smell or made me sick (from my experience only)

Turkey has more protein and is more than likely to have less chemicals added to it as Turkeys are bigger than chickens naturally and we all know chicken are one of the most heavily processed meats you can buy now.

my mom boils chicken for our dog :pac: but by boiling it would it not loose most of the goodness? Like what happens with veg...

would it not loose most of the goodness?

    define goodness.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 4,012 ✭✭✭stop animal cruelty

    define goodness.

"The state or quality of being good."

    "The beneficial or nutritious part."

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,869 ✭✭✭thegreatiam

    lol,

What goodness do you mean? the protein? the fats? the flavour?

you lose a negligible amount of vitamins, but you can counter this by using the boiling water to make a sauce or gravy.
But I doubt your dog cares that much.

The protein & if theres any other good nutrition.

l know about using the boiling water to make sauce or gravy, thats what we do with the veg.

No the dog doesnt care but lm just weary of losing the "goodness" in it.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,869 ✭✭✭thegreatiam

no, boiling meat is fine, anything that is lost is only minor. if youre really concerned, any cooking will affect the 'goodness' of a meat, steaming would affect it the least.

the taste is a different matter.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 17,771 ✭✭✭✭Mr. CooL ICE

FYI, I boil it purely out of convenience. Taste wise, its a little boring, but that's where the negatives end. Texture-wise it's fine, as long as it's not overdone.

buy some lean mince, 1lbs of lean mince has around 100g of protein and will run u around 5 euro a day. you can make it even leaner if you rince the cooked meat off with water and stick it back on the pan

Am I the only one whom if stuck will microwave a chicken breast in some water for produce a steamedish quick food ?

You could also add some nuts and seeds for the protein, extra nutrients and all good fats..
