Gels & Electrolytes affecting urine colour ?

    Hi,

I did a 30k run yesterday yesterday evening and drank about 1L water with 3 high5 electrolyte tablets in the hours before. The flavour of the electrolytes was cherry and made the water a red colour.

I also ate 2 high5 iso-gels that were berry flavour and dark red in colour. I urinated twice during the run and the colour of my urine was a strong red colour.

I am concerned that this might be blood but then thought that the supplements i took in the hours before could easily cause this colour.

Has this happened to anyone else ? I'm going to try next long run without electrolytes and gels to see if it still happens.

    Thanks for any tips

This will probably get locked for being seen as quasi medical advice, many things can affect urine colour berocca always does it for me. However, a deep red (like wine) colour can signify blood in urine (hematuria). I have experienced this when running marathons in hot countries when I got my hydration wrong. In these cases should clear up within a couple of hours! if not off to your doctor!!

Dark coca cola colors urine can be a sign of rhabdomyolasis (sp). If you've significant muscle soreness too, get to a doc ASAP.

    Get to a doc anyway.
