They're told to say that, you think it brings them any joy?

Buy your fuel elsewhere if it annoys you that much.

The female manager I bumped uglies with seemed kinda cool. Got free lunches for a while too.

They don't make money from Lotto do they? Why do they do it?

In all likelihood he was ordered by some jumped up pimple faced over weight recently promoted store manager high on Lucozade orange and bored out of his mind wanting to impress his superiors is probably why.

Loads of places are doing the lotto question thing now.

Just say no and walk away. Seriously, does it annoy you THAT much?

Topaz is usually the biggest rip off around for fuel so they don't usually get my custom.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 426 ✭✭Baneblade

yea its annoying but its a fairly safe bet the topaz worker is more annoyed by having to say it to every single person

I had an interview with them last year and they are all about this. I know the staff in my local Topaz well. I've said it to them before in a nice way and they say they hate doing it . Highly annoying I know. Same with McDonalds. "can I have a large meal please" Would you like to try a sundae etc. I gave out **** to one of them at the drive thru one day.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,147 ✭✭✭PizzamanIRL

Just have patience with them and understand the fact that they're told do to this by the boss. They couldn't care less if you want an extra packet of crisps but they have to ask.

well that's a disgusting way to act with someone who was probably put in the postion to ask without giving a fiddlers fart whether you wanted a sundae or not.

No it's highly annoying. People don't like it and if Topaz did their homework they should know this well. People don't have the money they used to these days and they don't need to be parting with anymore than they have to at the moment. Even if it just a euro her and there.

Why would you do that? They are only doing their job. Actually, they probably would get disciplined if caught not doing it. Don't be such a dick. I doubt it had any negative impact on you really other than proving you to be angry.

And you're the fool giving out to the lad on till over that instead of saying it to a manager

It is very annoying and a bit cringeworthy.
Treated son to a BurgerKing meal the other day as i couldn't be bothered cooking, asked for the medium size and she asked me did I want the bigger one.
If I wanted the bigger one I would have asked for it , I kind of felt embarrassed for her having to ask.
No point in getting annoyed at the 8.65e workers though, they get enough sh!t.

If it's annoying then don't go in there anymore. Simple.

I'm amazed by how little it takes to annoy people these days.

I don't know why you are thanking that poster, they showed the common sense not to "give out ****" to the till worker just doing their job.

    Unlike you.

It generates more customers coming to the store. Once there the likelyhood is they'll purchase more than just a lotto ticket.

    That sentenced is constructed poorly.

what you meant to say was

"I'm an ignoramus who doesn't give a shiit about anyone who serves me"

I basically said that "this cross selling is really annoying and you should speak to your management about this. Like I wasn't f-ing and blinding at him. But It's highly annoying. All I want is what I want..not extra's like handburgers sundaes and whatever. If I want I'll ask

Ahhhhhh so your previous post was to make you look like the big man bolloxing a worker out of it, when you were actually quite civil and polite about it??

Should have said that in the first place old chap!

    Not at all .

Not a case of being the big man. But this cross-selling thing is all over the place. Clearly people don't like it.

As I said I know the staff well in my local Topaz. But when it's a constant thing all the time it becomes a constant annoyance. And McDonald's Burger King...wherever. It's such an American thing. First saw it travelling in the USA.

But more like "here mate asking do I want extra's to my order is really annoying...probably a bit direct but not rude. Sorry I should have phrased it better

Marks and spencer were at this at Christmas, do you want mince pies and Dunnes Stores for a while with do you want phone credit. Feel sorry for the staff who have to say it.

It's called upselling, most retail workers are forced to try it these days.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 12,741 ✭✭✭✭Ally Dick

There's a stunning Russian girl working in my local Topaz. I heard a rumour that she does <cough> a different kind of work during the day to supplement her income. My mind races when she asks if I would like to do the lotto

As a former retailer worker, i can promise you that as annoying as it is for you to hear it constantly, it's a lot more annoying for the poor soul behind the till. We K NOW you don't want us to ask you anything. But at least you only have to hear it once or twice a day, we have to ask hundreds of people a day.

TBH I have always found the staff at my local Topaz very pleasant to deal with. The "would you like to do the lotto?" or "and do you need a lighter?" when buying cigarettes are mildly annoying, but in my experience the staff are the most pleasant of any chain that I can think of.

They are plainly being told by management to what to say and how to act, but I believe it would take a very strong and decent person to be so consistant in retail, so I just try to enjoy the good quality customer service.

When asked by Topaz minion "Would you like to buy a lottery ticket?", I find the best action is to ask them in detail what is the lottery, how does it work, is it a draw, how many numbers do you pick, can you pick more, can you pick less, if not why not, can I buy foreign lottery, do I have to pick the numbers in Irish or English? Take as long as possible! If upsell and cross selling slows down operations they might revise their strategies

As a former Dunnes worker, we were told to ask everyone if they wanted phone credit or plastic bags and that the managers would be closely monitoring us throughout the day. Out of principle I never said it to the customers, just smiled and said hello, was more then enough.

Now I just use the autotills in Tesco to avoid human contact....
