Is it possible to loose weight without exercise???

I am soon to have major surgery and due to the nature of the problem, I am unable to exercise. I have put on around 22lbs since the problem first started to impact on my life last Oct (yes it was due to eating a load of crap and not being able to exercise). I always kept my weight in check by eating healthy (most of the time!!) and brisking walking for 45mins every day.

So really I am just wondering how do I loose the extra weight and try to maintain it without exercise?? Is diet alone going to be enough??

    All advice welcome.

Yes you can use weight without exercise as long as you are in a calorie deficit.

He didn't advise against it tbh - he just said that it would probably help my recovery if I wasn't carrying the extra weight. He then just gave me the usual tips on eating healthy foods etc.

I have never really dieted before without exercising as I always felt both went hand in hand so trying o loose weight without going out for my walks is new territory for me. Thats why I'm looking for some advise.

Work out your calorie needs (see the stickies) then eat less than this. You can use something like myfitnesspal.com to track your calories and count them for you.

I have lost a stone in the last three months through changing my eating habits alone. I wasn't particularly overweight to begin with but wanted to eat a more balanced diet, while seeing if I could lower my cholesterol levels through diet.

Myfitnesspal is great for not only tracking how many calories you are consuming but also seeing the nutritional value of foods.

Thanks guys - have had a look at the stickies as advised. Sat down today and worked out my new meal plans. Really looking forward to getting started and shedding those lbs!!!

Thank you for your advise Jurg but if you don't mind I won't be following it.

Also maybe you shouldn't be quite so lazy when reading a post as if you had read mine correctly you would have noticed I wrote that due to the nature of my problem I am unable to exercise. Also I stated that up until this happened to me I exercised every day, so no I won't get off my lazy hole and do some exercise as you put it.

Please report offensive posts rather than taking a thread offtopic. Cheers.

I apologise Oryx for taking the thread off topic - I admit I replied rather hastily when another poster got a bit hateful instead of reporting it.

    That's me told off!!! :o

Go onto any weightloss calculator online and put in your current weight and the amount you want to lose and it will tell you the calories you can eat in a day without exercising and yes it is possible of course!

There is a load of misinformation and junk science spouted these days, many of those spouting this pseudoscience are either trying to push their own fad ideas (Atkins/5:2 fast plan/paleo diet) or emphasising a spartan exercise programme. The truth is remarkably simple. Work out what your resting metabolism rate is per day, and eat less calories than it requires to maintain weight. You WILL lose body weight in this way. It will be less rapid than if you combined it with an exercise programme, but the laws of physics dictate that if you obey the basic rules of your body, it will comply with your desire to lose weight. No junk science, no waffle, just fact.

People will tell you to stop eating grapes or cut out all bread from your diet or some random food that is magically bad for you all of a sudden or whatever, but this kind of puritanism is objectively pathetic and only leads people to become demoralised and give up. Not bragging or anything but I've lost four stone through basic 'watch what you eat' and a moderate exercise programme. This is after years of being a victim to every fad and every piece of 'self help' propaganda in the market. Stop eating crap, eat less in general, and you will lose weight. Its not rocket science.
