Good luck with the EGM Orwellians.
Good to see problems are being addressed. Have heard the inter club league is a bit hectic and like our own possibly a victim of it's own success.
    Hope you find a solution.

Are new members welcome to attend the meeting?
I have checked the club website - is there a list of proposals to be put to members. I am presuming that as it is an egm, that there is?
If so, where could one see them so as to at least form a view.

    Thanks

Anyone in Orwell who's paid (or is intending to pay) league fees for the upcoming season is welcome.

Proposals will be put to the floor on the night.

Don't forget this is tonight, of interest to all racing Orwellians.

Not sure if I'll make it myself due to work, but hoping to.

Any idea how long this is expected to run for? I'm hoping to attend (was told I can pay-up membership on the night) but I have to be home for a call at 21:00 so need to leave at 20:30. Will head along anyway and bail if needed, but would be good to know how long they generally run for.

Won't make it myself, but as it's my first year in the club league whatever decision is made won't really affect me, it's all new to me!

I don't know when the last EGM was, so tbh I don't really know. It depends on the amount of discussion wanted/needed. I would hope to be done by 20.30, but I suppose it could be 21.00 if a lot of members want to make a point.

It's worth coming along and hearing what the situation is, and maybe asking someone to stick a hand up for you if you're tending toward a particular solution.

That bad, eh? Right, I'll be in the seat nearest the door so for a tidy getaway at 20:30, but it'll still be good to get down to see the lay of the land and to get the sign-up done.

I'd imagine that it will generate a good discussion.

Actually I have a pretty good idea

Orwell are withdrawing from CI and with it the UCI, and will form a breakaway League

They are currently in contact with an unnamed "ex American racer" who they are referring to under the codename Juan Pelota, They have asked him to become President of the new league and he is expected to announce a comeback racing in it in a special pre-recorded interview that is due to be aired on Thursday...

Jeebus all these secrets about Club Leagues is coming across all very Masonic!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 8,138 ✭✭✭buffalo

I think all the clubs have been informed, and there'll be a proper statement on the front page of the site soon, but for now I can confirm that Orwell have decided to withdraw from the league and go it alone for 2013.

Both the inter-club league and Orwell itself are victims of their own success really, leading to huge numbers taking part on Thursday nights. With a cap on numbers coming in at some level, and with Orwell being the biggest club in the league (and the biggest in the country), the only realistic option was for us to do our own league. Any other way would involve disappointing a large number of our riders.

We debated running our own league alongside the inter-club league, and leaving some riders in that, but doubling up on organising, marshalling, fees, etc. was deemed too much of a headache and stretching our resources.

Hopefully with Orwell out, some of the pressure is off the inter-club league in terms of numbers and safety, and it will continue to operate with success, and both leagues will grow and prosper in time.

Ah sh!te, gonna miss battling the Orwell crew every Thursday. Best of luck with yer own setup.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 68,317 ✭✭✭✭seamus

I think that's probably the best outcome for the safety of all riders in both Orwell and the inter-club league.

Will the league continue without Orwell or is that the end of the league?

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 2,505 ✭✭✭colm_gti

So what happens with the race circuits? Will each league be forced to come up with new routes? Or will the orwell league be run on a different night to the ICL? I doubt the residents around the route will be too happy with 2 races a week. Or will each league be run on each route on alternate weeks? Say orwell use Brittas when the ICL is in Batterstown, and vice-versa. Will the orwell league even use the Batterstown circuits anymore?

There's a draft plan for the new Orwell League, which I'm sure will be published once the details are finalised. The plan is to co-ordinate with the other clubs to make sure there's no clash in schedules.

The league will continue with the other clubs. The issue was basically with the size of the league becoming unwieldy and dangerous. Options included having a "quota" of riders that each club can enter in the inter-club league to keep numbers down.

I missed the EGM, but afaik there has separately been discussion about changing the routes or adding more routes as residents were getting a bit peeved anyway. Given that Orwell's league doesn't need to satisfy a number of clubs in different locations, they're free to look at new circuits more suitable to Orwell's location.

Phoenix Park ftw.(On the cycle path with joggers doubling up as both marshals and mobile chicanes).

I think some new circuits are required for everyone's benefit - particularly the poor residents of Batterstown. The IVCA are now largely just running TTs through the village, but they will still be getting "regulars" (including TTs) probably on Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday evenings with a number of weekend open races thrown in as well

I love the fact that you explained to the proles where Roly's is, and that it's a bistro.

I think he may have just been trying to distinguish it from Roly Saul The Restaurant in Dundrum. It could have created confusion for the Orwellers ;)
