(where this myth that we're rich comes from is beyond me, the company ran at a loss last year)

Would you make a donation to boards if they asked for your support (In the same way Wikipedia has it's yearly appeal)?

Shall we organise a another naked mod fundraiser to help out? :D

They're in violation of the defense act on the military forum. A letter from the DPP might force them to open the wallet further. A site hosted in Cavan promoting careers in the British military is illegal.

Now what were you talking about?

Ran a loss as in couldn't afford to keep the lights on or put their coke n' hookers on the company tab?

Many companies ''run a loss'' for reasons best left up to the imaginations of their accountants.

No, I give boards free content from which they can generate traffic and thus advertising revenue. I certainly wouldn't donate money to a private company. If the site was a non-profit charity, and dropped the advertising, maybe.

The users give enough as it stands.

I would gladly, my only gripe is that I can't seem to subscribe without using Paypal.

I despise Paypal for my own personal reasons, if someone wishes to explain how I can make a subscription via laser/visa etc without Paypal, I'll be up and going asap.

Worth remembering that Facebook didn't make a penny until 2009.

Boards.ie it would seem, has plenty of ecommerce nous and is running the Google model: get big, get popular, and hopefully make some money down the line when all that peaks. Profit, at the end of the day means very little when you have not got all your cylinders firing and Boards most certainly doesn't, when it comes to possible ad revenue at least. Were certain companies to buy Boards in the morning, it's members would have ads coming out their ears within days (ads you can't switch off).

Boards, for whatever reason, have chosen to not exploit that money making potential as of yet (if ever at all) but that shouldn't be confused with not showing a profit despite all attempts to do so, as that just wouldn't be true. The place is worth a small fortune and I sure wish I had a chunk of it for my pension fund.

Woah, things must really be bad if the owners are creating multis to defend themselves.

Boards should just get rid of After Hours and save themselves a lot of grief.

Could someone please explain the benefit of subscribing? I wouldn't want admin going hungry but I'm somewhat confused. Would I be paying for a new jumper for Dave?

Get rid of the busiest forum on the site? Sure kill the goose that lays the golden ad impressions.

The one thing I thought after moving to the UK is that the team here could make a UK equivalent of Adverts. Everyone over here mainly uses Gumtree but their layout and overall site is horrendous.

Would be difficult in getting the locations set up correctly as well as a number of other issues such as getting it off the ground, but the layout of Adverts is fantastic and would be unrivalled over here.

Ha! Its not a charity or online community. Mods are unpaid. We get no money for posting here.

Why can't boards be hosted outside Ireland and save all the legal wrangling?

    What is boards.ie worth?

It's the biggest Irish based community site in Ireland so it should be worth something.

Many of the ads only started popping up recently so maybe that will start making them more money.

The list of company's on the talk to forums is growing as well and they're fairly busy like, if they can get more company's on there they'd be onto a winner.

I think they have the numbers now, all they need to do is get as many paying people on board(s) as possible. The balancing act between keeping people on board(s) while maximising revenue will be a tough job though.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 24,537 ✭✭✭✭Cookie_Monster

well of course they made a loss, need to write off all that coke and hookers as an expense for tax purposes don't they. otherwise I'd bet they'd all be millionaires.

You get 4 red stars after your name and you get to go on the sex and sexuality forum. Those are the most important, or the only ones I remember at this time in the morning.

I don't give a crap that boards ran at a loss, what i do care about is this

I watched it in dismay remembering back to when I was a hotel worker during the Celtic Tiger earning minimum wage

How our imperious leader Dav worked in a hotel for minimum wage during the boom!!!!!

It must take a very talented group of business people to lose money despite having hundreds of rubes working for you for free

A rags to riches story reminiscent of Frank Capra, no less.

    And a custom avatar.

To be honest...it's not very much. They could attract many more subscribers if there was something else offered as well. Not sure what though :D

I have donated through subscriptions in the past which I have every intention of doing when I have the cash. Most people seem to forget that the admins aren't making a fortune and it must be a nightmare to manage the site in this current age of constant threat of content disputes and Sean Sherlock. Plus, simply out of respect for the people such as moderators who work their asses off for free and view the site to be important enough to do so.

to be fair they have created their own hell. Compared to a site like Politics.ie , the moderation on this site is like something out of North Korea. I'm surprised more poeple havnt left the site.

To be fair, while some of the modding stuff might make more work than might be necessarily needed for the mods, they did sign up for it and are willing to put in the hard yards for free and really shouldn't get the stick and hassle that some people give them.

I'd bring in Hobbes' 'Leviathan' but something tells me that might be a bit tricky to digest in AH of a Monday morning.

Anyhoo I'm not quite sure what I posted here has the bejaysus to do with the site running a loss but I've gone and said it.

Bulletin boards in general are dying a death, they're like so Nineties. Irish bulletin boards seem to be an exception to this but for how long?

Message boards have a future if they provide a service - boards.ie/p.ie/property pin/digitalspy/mumsnet/oneclickchicks/any football forum are all proof of that.

In terms of monetization of the user base there's one problem they will need to keep hidden from any investors. In my case (and I would say its common) at least the only times I regularly look at boards a lot is when I have no money or employment to have me doing something more interesting and worthwhile
