Aintree Grand National 2013

I've backed T43 but not going mad. The Strong Gale influence in the stamina hasn't been very successful despite a lot of attempts.

Sunnyhillboy has to come into calculations. He has been around the course and beaten a whisker last year when coming back with a cut on his leg. 25/1 will look very attractive come later in the year.

Join Together should probably be favourite for this I think. I saw a post about his pedigree - he's basically purposely bred for the race. His run in the Becher shows he can jump the fences and by the way he finished so well there. Only concern is his age but 8yo have won it '73, '83, '92, '02.

Seabass is probably still well treated only getting a rise of 5lbs. No doubt he'll get a around 3 Aintree phantom pounds so will be closer to 160. did he not get home or did he have a long season last year?

Alfie Sherrin is an interesting one but not one I'd rely on. I need to look closer at his recent races though. I'd say McCoy will ride Sunnyhillboy though.

    I completely agree.

    My two against the field right now are two that i backed last year;
Sunnyhillboy - would have won with better jockey
Seabass - definite improvement to come.

on his own for me backed him at 20s 14s now was going better than anything when coming down last year

Anyone think Carruthers might be lined up for this with his run over hurdles in the Cleeve or is it purely to get a an eye on the World Hurdle?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,838 ✭✭✭Nulty

Actually just saw the feature on Marcus Bradstock on the Morning Line there. No hint of the National and I don't think the owners are interested anyway.

All of the above plus Prince de beauchene, although he won't be as well handicapped this year after being raised 12lb for winning the bobbyjo chase.

He has a real bit of class about him though so unless the British handicapper takes draconian action with his weight then he'd still look to be the right sort for the national.
I was very taken by his hurdles win at Limerick. Drifted like a barge on course but won cosily from a useful type in venture capital over a trip shorter than ideal. His next run(prob the bobbyjo) will tell a story

    Looked a decent trial

Ruby seemed in no hurry to give him a hard race but when Russell looked cooked on Make Your Mark he bustled him up to take a staying on 2nd without getting beat up.

I'm assuming his mark will be a bit higher than last year however.

I'm assuming Ruby would have the option but will ride one of the Mullins/Wylie horses so does Katie Walsh ride again?

Surely Katie will be on board again.

10 5 for Treacle, should defnitely get in off that.

I think somewhere around 10 stone will get in again this year.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,340 ✭✭✭sting60

Tidal Bay rated 162 for the National yet is on a current mark of 171.Based on those figures he is thrown in off 9 lbs less than he should have.I would love to hear why Phil Smith gave Tidal Bay a rating of 162.The horse I like is Wyke Hill 33/1 will stay and gound is not an issue.Another horse to watch if he runs is The Rainbow Hunter 66/1.He pulled up last time out[scoped bad] but his previous run was excellent where he gave Loc Ba 13lb and beat him ,Loc Ba won his next race in a canter. The Rainbow Hunter is a horse to watch in the comming weeks to see if he really should line up in the National.

Tidal Bay gets in 9lbs "light"

While I know it's to encourage class horses to run & nor have horses running out if the handicap its a bit much. Is be properly pissed off if I owned a 155 rated chaser who actually had to run off 155

    .
Let him complain. Wasn't complaining when Colbert Station had about a stone in hand set up for the gamble over Christmas

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,838 ✭✭✭Nulty

40th horse on the list is carrying 10-6. There will be plenty coming out above that in the next few weeks.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 15,775 ✭✭✭✭Slattsy

    Those weights are a disgrace.
Ted Walsh has every right to complain.

And before you go off on one Urban ;) what a horse has in hand (unofficially) has no credence here.
Just look at Tidal Bays rating and weights compared to Seabass and tell me how thats fair.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 18,335 ✭✭✭✭UrbanSea

Never said it was. Whatever about attracting good horses but it just takes away from the fact that it's a handicap.

Soll catches the eye. Lol Ladbrokes really love to stand out. They go 8/1 the field, the lowest elsewhere is 12/1 fav

Its a great spot, Definately go racing ladies day  need i say more. Buy your tickets online soon enough because they will sell out soon and touts will fleace you! Also try and avoid havng to collect them over there as you have to go a bit out of the qay to que to collect them. Tatts tickets are the job and if you keep an eye on security you might get to get into one of the more fancy enclosures! I hope you like fosters because all they have is that and bitter. The place is manic so get there early! Enjoy!

4.84 using Betfair back prices (on which you'd have to pay commission)

4.756 using best bookmaker prices so looks good if you fancy the 3 coupled

I can’t resist a super long shot at a great price, and What a Friend ticks all those boxes in the National. He loves good ground, looks like he will stay forever, and judging by Paul Nichols today is being aimed at the race. 190/1 on Betfair at the moment is defiantly value. He has proven top class in the last few years with a couple of placed efforts in the Golf Cup and a few other notable top class runs. He hasn’t run this year yet but that is more than likely because he likes good ground.

    1 Point win 190 Betfair..

Tidal Bay is out. He suffered a small fracture.

Makes Phil Smith look an even bigger clown now for the way he tried to frame the weights just to get him to run

I wonder is this part of the reason he missed the Pillar? Has Nicholls been leading everyone on

Tidal Bay is 12 so is that career ending?

Had a quick scan of the entries last night. The 3 I put on a very rough short list were Jessie's Dream, Midnight Chase & Magnanimity

However the weights will rise now, at least 5lbs IMO as I don't think Albertas Run or Imperial Commander will run & Quito De La Roque might not run shouldering top weight. That makes me less enthusiastic about Midnight Chase & Magnanimity hasn't won over 3m apart from a point to point

IC will defo run. NTD has basically confirmed it as long as the horse can breathe he will run him.

Lay side is blank on Betfair for anyone who backed T43 also....

Actually ignore this, Betfair surely suspended on the Tidal Bay news so I'd say the market is just sorting out after it reopened

Bad result yesterday for T43. Makes the price taken worthless. They say the ground was the problem, must have been tacky heavy. He's shown he's very effective on better ground by winning at Cheltenham last year but I'm not sure I want to go in again. The Strong Gale thing puts me off.

Cappa Bleu, ironically, was cut after performing well over 3m. He has Strong Gale in his pedigree too so the biggest worry about him wasn't put to bed. Do they really get 4m3f110y (the shortening of teh distance by 110y will help I'm sure). You need to gallop to the line as was shown last year.
