Ulster look to get back to winning ways against the Scarlets with a vastly improved team announced from last weeks "2nd XV" which played against Munster in the teams first loss in the Rabo.

There are 8 changes made to the starting line up with the return of Tom Court, Dan Touhy, Nick Williams, Chris Henry, Ruan Piennar, Paddy Jackson, Darren Cave and Andrew Trimble. Adam Macklin gets his first home start after an up and down 60 minutes against munster. Adam D'Arcy is retained at 15 and Luke Marshall continues after an impressive outing. Michael Heaney is rewarded with a place on the bench after an impressive cameo appearance against munster setting up a try for Ali Birch. Niall Annett is also inculded on the bench after a similarly impressive showing after coming on against munster.

    Ulster: A D'Arcy, A Trimble, D Cave, L Marshall, C Gilroy; P Jackson, R Pienaar; T Court, R Herring, A Macklin, L Stevenson, D Tuohy, R Diack, C Henry (capt), N Williams.

    Replacements: N Annett, C Black, J Afoa, N McComb, R Wilson, M Heaney, P Wallace, R Andrew.

Scarlets : Dan Newton, George North, Gareth Maule, Jonathan Davies (capt), Kristian Phillips, Aled Thomas, Tavis Knoyle, Phil John, Emyr Phillips, Jacobie Adriaanse, Sione Timani, Richard Kelly, Josh Turnbull, Johnathan Edwards, Rob McCusker.

Replacements: Kirby Myhill, Rhodri Jones, Deacon Manu, Tomas Vallejos, Craig Price, Gareth Davies, Scott Williams, Adam Warren.

    Referee: Leighton Hodges (WRU)
Assistant Referees: Sean Gallagher, Brian MacNeice (both IRFU)
    Citing Commissioner: Gordon Black (IRFU)
    TMO: Marshall Kilgore (IRFU)

A lot of people have criticized Gilroy's defence...North will target him a lot no doubt. But I think we'll be fine, our back row will be pretty dominant. Ulster by 7-10

Yeah i agree, have yet to see him make a big miss in defense. Good he's going to get some game time now (sad for the reason why).

Hoping for an Ulster win as it'll do Munster and Leinster a big favour in securing a playoff place.

I can see Lanelli dropping out of the play off positions this weekend and not getting back in. The other play off teams (Leinster, Ospreys, and Glasgow) have gotten over their slow start to the season and will be too strong for Lanelli to catch.

Here we go, come on Ulster!

    First scrum

Big chance now for Macklin to put down a marker. He won't get ahead of Afoa but if he impresses over the next while he could cement a place even when Fitzpatrick returns

    early engagement

Don't like refs that leave a long pause between touch and set.

  • Administrators Posts: 54,417 Admin ✭✭✭✭✭awec

    Poor so far

  • 12 mins gone, Ulster doing well but missing some important passes and losing ball at unlucky moments.

D'Arcy limping off and Ricky Andrew joins the side.

    Ulster 0 - 3 Scarlets

For those in UK (Sky) you have the choice of BBC2 NI or BBC2 Wales. Two different commentary and punditry teams! Fairly impressive.

  • Macklin and Court earn a scrum penalty.

Pienaar on kicks tonight, should be straightforward.

The ref keeps on saying "use it"! I wish he's shut up.

Williams finding a bit of space to get the head nodding.

Nothing pretty so far but i'll take 4 points if possible.

Am watching the Leinster match but what happened with Dan Tuohy going off??

Stevensons having a mighty game, would be first choice lock if at Leinster.

was going to say he was a monster in the tight for the 30 mins I saw.

Saw him stretching his calf after a gallop down the touchline, only back from a calf injury, I'd guess its more precautionary than anything serious.

Tom Court, what's up with those glasses mate... :pac:

    Afoa and Wallace on

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 3,883 ✭✭✭shuffol

Wallace change is odd unless there's an injury seeing as D'arcys already gone off injured. Marshalls done well too.

Jacksons choice of passing is excellent, people rave about Madigans passing but for me Jacksons is better as he always seems to give it to the correct player. Madigan on the other hand though he has great technnigue has a tendency to throw a lot of man and ball passes.

Afoa is lethal in the scrum.

    this.

    Madigan's hands, Jackson's head.

The former is easier to teach than the latter. The idea of being a 'natural' in your position.

In Madigans defence he plays a lot flatter than Jackson so doesn't allow himself the time to pick and choose his passes like Jackson. The upside being Madigan scores a hell of a lot of tries from standing in the same flat positions.

Maybe he has been watching too much of Rog lately?

Personally I think that Madigan is further ahead in terms of their development but that Jackson has a higher upside. If he can continue to learn from Pienaar's decision making he will be a good player.

Big Nick is having a stormer...

  • Administrators Posts: 54,417 Admin ✭✭✭✭✭awec

Williams, what a man. Love to see him running with the ball, if he gets himself up to full tilt he's a deadly man to stop!

  • Referee wanting to use the TMO so has to ask if it was a try!

    Hilarious

Don't think it was a knockon either...
