I'm looking to purchase one or the other with a view to preparing a morning shake.

Ingredients will most likely include protein powder, oats, berries, maybe some green veg like half a head of brocoli or something.

Am I after a blender or a food processor?

Somebody must be on the veggie / berry breakfast shakes?

Maybe both would do the same job?

You want a blender. A food processor will do pretty much the same job, but it will take longer. If all you want is entirely liquified shakes then a blender is your best bet.

Some people use stick blenders and some upright blenders.

Personally I prefer the upright version, I do have both and use my Kenwood blender the most. You can get ones that call themselves specifc smoothie blenders. Someone gave me one and I found the tap blocked and ended up throwing it out.

Go for a decent quality upright blender in my opinion. I would steer clear of Cookworks brand - cheap and not so good in my opinion and go for something like a Kenwood or other decent brand.

I bought one of these 6 months ago and have used it almost every day since with no complaints. Considering it cost €22 on sale in Harvey Norman, I've certainly gotten my money's worth
