Just saw it in the listings there. Called Rory-being number one.
Based on his last 12 months
On bbc 1 at 10.30, might be of interest to some of you

Apparently he states that he may not play in the Olympics to avoid having to choose between Irl/GB

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,337 ✭✭✭big_drive

Probably be the easiest option for him at this stage

I'm not seeing this in the listings for BBC 1 tonight. Is it on some variation like BBC Wales or BBC NI?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,337 ✭✭✭big_drive

Probably bbc 1 Northern Ireland I think

Why not compete under the IOC flag? There were a few athletes under this flag in london, ie they had no country so represented the IOC.

Who honestly gives a f...ck who he plays for.?maybe he should Marry wosniaky become a Danish citizen and play under their flag .

It is a pity they do not do this with some of the other great golfers out there.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 312 ✭✭raymann

if he had said from the start he wants to play for ireland no one in the uk would have even cared. even in the north a person of catholic background playing for the republic is seen as normal. its clear he would rather play for britain and he realises the huge ****e storm that would create.

crap situation all round and one that has made me realise the situation up there is not as simply divided by the religious lines i thought it was.

Does anybody know how to set up BBC1 NI on a sky HD Box ?

Channel 141 if you are viewing in the Republic of Ireland. Or try other channels through the services section on your remote.

Really good documentary... loved the archived footage never seen before.

Also, kinda think it's crazy that Rory makes a huge comment that he is seriously considering not playing golf in the Olympics and we are not allowed to discuss it on a golf forum

No it's not. It just turns into a sh*t storm

Great documentary though, he always gives BBC NI a lot more access

Really want to go get the clubs out and go practicing after watching that :)

I don't know what I expected to be fair, but I thought it was a bit of a let down.

Nice to see the footage of him at home and as a kid.

Massive fan of Rory the golfer, but Rory the person doesn't have the same appeal to me (he'll be very upset I know :) )

Just find him a bit "too nice", and as for Whatshernameski... Christ, I couldn't handle her at all.
Maybe I've a slightly twisted mind, ok I do, but I'd love to see him be a young lad for a few years. Go out and party, enjoy all the trimmings a young superstar could be having.

Interesting programme; some good 'behind the scenes' footage.

Really got the sense of what a circus his life is and how hard it must be for him to just concenrate on golf. I'm sure all the money more than makes up for. How many times did the presenter like saying 'million dollars, another million dollars........'?!

I thought the background music and the moaney/droney voice of the narrator gave the programme the tone of an obituary!!
The old video of him as a child was really great, you can see the classic Rory swing from the outset. Definitely worth watching and the struggle that he is having with coming to a nice balance between being a young chap and a global sports superstar is fascinating. All said, he is doing a pretty decent job in getting there, and the golf is pretty decent too!! He does not have one of those instantly charming personalities, but he has a killer smile which he uses to great effect. He is certainly a very smart young man. He will always be the Irish fellah no matter what flag he plays under.

    cheers

    Peter

The problem up North is that there are loads of oafs who would make it their mission to 'care'. It's a place where people riot over flags!

I wonder of the Olympics body could let him represent both? Although that seems unlikely, they tend to avoid politics.

I never thought Olympic Golf was that big a deal though. I doubt he'll be THAT worried. There are much bigger competitions out there in Golf that aren't controversial for him.

thats enough on the flags thanks. Last warning.

The reintroduction of tennis at the London olympics was a damp squib and we only saw it because Brit great hope Andy Murray was doing well and even won the gold. My guess is that the golf is going to be lost in the overall scale of the olympic TV show as it is dominated by a host of short fast events, perfect for TV.

Tennis got reintroduced in 1988 so not exactly sure what you mean here. Considering the most wide-ranging golf event on the planet is also played for no prize money (the Ryder Cup, in terms of non-golfers watching it) then I think it could be an excellent addition.

1998, I stand corrected, I just never noticed, but you make my point perfectly!
As to TV coverage of golf in the olympics and the wall to wall Ryder Cup broadcasts, it will only get miniscule slots, in my opinion. I dont for a moment mean to suggest it is not a good thing, I just think it will not be a big draw.

    Cheers

I wonder could he say play for Ireland in the Rio Olympic and then the UK in the one after that or vice versa. I suppose though there would be an argument over who he would play for first then?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,036 ✭✭✭Loire

Thought the show was only OK. The bits when he was young were great, but the rest was just a summary of what was on the tele. It would have been great if the show was stretched to the hour and showed some more of his practice sessions - was well-impressed at what he was lifting in the gym

Totally agree. I mean we don't want deliberately provocative comments but Rory's going to be the biggest thing ever to come out of Northern Ireland and this issue can't really be just swept under the carpet.

According to my girlfriend they do this with ALL of her shows as if it's some kind of personal vendetta.

We're talking Eastenders, Strictly blah blah blah and the worst of the lot, the X Factor.

I have told her I have set up a quality control setting on the box that turns off before the end of shows that are utter ****e.

    /off topic

you can edit the recorder settings to start/stop +/-5mins to make sure you get all of it, but if you are recordings scheduled back to back you are in trouble....

Watched this last night, thought Rory and the missus came across as very down to earth considering their respective profiles

BBC's effort - notwithstanding the fact that they had great access to him all year and archive footage - put Greg Allen's piece on RTE the other night to shame. Nothing worse than getting an interview with a fella for 30 minutes and getting absolutely nothing new from him.

How did you manage to watch it - I can't get access to BBC iPlayer from here - presume you had it taped? I only have the RTE interview taped unfortunately :-/

I had it recorded from original broadcast on BBC1 NI

Totally agree with you there. Couldn't believe how bad RTEs effort was after getting access to the guy for a 30min Interview. I'd watch most things about McIlroy but I had to turn it off halfway through. Terrible.

.. well I see Rory was wearing an orange shirt at Quail Hollow yesterday - it wasn't a sash, just an orange shirt but ..- that's all I'm saying like..

If he considers himself British, let him play for the Brits. I don't want him playing for Ireland, if he doesn't want to play for us.

Who really gives a flying fcuk - it's the Olympics for God's sake.
