Squats & Deadlift

So as of recent, I've copped on my training programme and squats have finally become a huge part of my leg routine- as has deadlifting.

What I'd like to know is it okay to squat and deadlift on the same day? And then deadlift again on back day?

I was thinking if I do stiff legged deadlifts on back day and then after a few weeks doing normal deadlifts using legs and lower back? Was thinking this may help my PR's? Or am I best off doing it the way I am at the moment?

Also on a side note- When I squat my right knee has developed a funny click on the way down, what could this be down to?

After a PM to Oryx, I'll have a new 2013 programme up soon as i wasn't at all happy with how I started my other one.

    It depends.

It depends - volume, intensity, sleep and kcal levels will all effect it.

Could be anything really... tendons sliding against each other perhaps!!

There's nothing wrong with deadlifting and squatting on the same day, provided it's approached sensibly as part of a well put together program.

    Thanks Hanley. Well at current I'd be doing this;

    Monday; Chest and triceps.
    Tuesday; Legs.
    Thursday; Back and Biceps.
    Friday; Shoulders.

And on both squat and deadlift I'd be doing 5x5's. Then if I feel up to it 1 rep maxes.

    a proper squat?
as in, quads horizontal with floor?
105kg is not bad if you're doing them right

deadlifts - thats a good lift!

Yup, just below parallel. I could probably go heavier but not get the full movement and I feel it'd be wasted.

I haven't done that in about a month or so since my weight was a bit higher, around 72-3kg with BF of 10.6%. More recently I'm at 69kg with a higher BF- around 13%. BF was prob down to christmas indulging.

Pretty impressive for a 72kg man for a 150kg deadlift.

Is it only clicking on your squats? It could be anything from tendons slipping as Hanley said to a small meniscal tear or just crepitus.

Cheers for that! Hoping to keep making gains obviously. But I think they'll probably come with some gain in weight.

Yup, just while squatting. I thought it might be down to the angle that I point my feet at (about 40degrees or so.) but even while box squatting it clicks. Is that a physio appointment or can I do my own home rehab for say?

as far as i know if you get a bit of popping and it doesn't hurt then it's alright...i had a bit of popping in my left knee and shoulder and the physio said it was grand as long as it wasn't painful.

for the numbers you're hitting i don't think squatting and deadlifting on the same day would be a good idea...but thats just my opinion. having your two biggest compounds on the same day (at that kind of weight) means one is bound to suffer. have you considered doing front and back squats on leg day and deadlifting on back day? if you're at 150kg @ 72kg you're at a decent level and going heavy once a week should be enough for progression.

oh thats good on the popping front then. Its not sore, I just had noticed it while squatting the bar for technique.

Yeah I was considering that option tbh. Might be able to heavier on both if I have separate training days for both. You might be right about the long term injury thing too so I'll do a bit of research into it and see. i don't lift heavy on both on the same day. If I'm going heavy on squats I'll do lighter deadlifts.

I was also considering putting in some SLDL's so I'll definitely have to do some swap around.
