Ive been a RaboDirect customer for a few years now and found it to be a great way to save, you can easily setup a direct debit, access your money anytime and I think Interest is paid monthly.

I was setting the GF up with an account and decided to look around for a promotional code when I came across this link:
    http://www.truthbank.ie/truths/OpenAccount

    Per that site:
Enter promo code 'Truthbank' in the promotional code box within the online application form and you'll receive €30 free in your new account. When I setup my account a few years ago I received €25 free.

    Copied from Rabo:
"With the RaboDirect Savings Account we don't do fees or sneaky charges. That would just be mean."
"You don't have to have a huge amount of money to earn interest on a RaboDirect Savings Account. Simply start with just €1."

The investment account is separate from the savings account, I have one but havn't used it yet :) Rabo's official word on it:
The RaboDirect Investment Account is free to open and there are no admin or maintenance fees - regardless of how frequently, or how much you invest. You'll find everything you need to know about our fees here.
Do you have to print the application off or can it be submitted online? Thanks OP
They do request that you print off the completed form, sign and date it and return by post. They also need a photocopy of a doc with your PPS Number and a photocopy of either your passport or drivers license.

No, I didn't have to lodge any money to get the free money or anything like that. danjo-xx is right though, they will verify your id before opening the account with the money.

Im just wondering how "safe" of a bank are rabo for long term or large sum investments? Are they guaranteed like other banks in Ireland or should there be any concerns with them?

How much notice do you need to give to withdraw money from this into your (BOI) current account?

Going on a trip in March that I want to put away a few quid for every week and then withdraw into my current account on the week in going away.

No notice needed. And you can either do regular savings or once off (or do both/neither) best of both worlds!

For me it was great since I could immediately withdraw my savings from BOI and lodge it in Rabo and then every month add a little more by direct debit.

It's a great account - I believe bonkers.ie recently rated them as the best on-demand deposit account.

The bank account is backed/guaranteed by the Dutch government I think? In any case it's a AAA rated bank, which is not what you can say about our domestic banks.

What gets my goat is that the Irish banks are rated so low yet give such meagre on demand rates. Though I did open a 14 month deposit account back when they had 4.7%(?) as the headline rate.

Rabobank is massive, its currently ranked 8th safest bank in the world. They are still making billions of profit despite the recession.

Arguably much safer than any of our banks.

    I don't think there's any argument.

So...what is rabodirect? What do you use it for?

EDIT: I see it as a bank.

2.45% monthly is it?! Seems like a great deal, no fees at all.

    I don't think there's any argument.
I remember opening up bank accounts when I started college with the pillar banks, thinking this free money they are giving me can't be a sound business model. They never made a penny from that money they gave me!

Having said that anything that encourages people to save is a great thing. The fees are built into the price of the products as far as I remember, which means you can buy a handful a units and not get stung for min charges. I liked them until others brought in more favourable savings rates but do have a liking for them.

they are rated higher than the Irish Government by Moodys & S&P

Effectively that mean the irish government is more liely to default than rabo

In the grand scheme of Ratings

    Rabo are AA-
    Irish Banks are about BB

    where it goes:

    AAA
    AA+
    AA
    AA-
    BBB+
    BBB
    BBB-
    BB+
    BB

so your money is much safer in a Rabo.
Also there are caps as to how much are guaranteed by Irish Banks (if the guarantee is there there??

Two? I tried that last year and was told that they don't allow that. I'd be interested if they changed this.

So is this just for a separate savings account, or would it be any use to close my AIB/BoI account and move completely over?

It's one of few big banks that did not need a bailout.

It wouldn't really work as a substitute for AIB/BOI in terms of your current account as its not possible to have a debit card. Its more of a savings and investments bank. You could move your savings account from AIB/BOI to Rabo if you wanted.

Best thing to do if you want to save up a bit of money is to open a Rabo account and setup a money mover in your Rabo account. Then you can tell your Rabo money mover to take an amount from your AIB/BOI account on a regular basis. The interest rate is good as far as whats available, your money is in safe hands and its somewhat out of sight so your less likely to dip into it.

You can have it linked to PayPal however which is good. Interest seems to be 2.5, I looked at tsb instant access savings account, the online regular saver, that has 3.5

The first time I logged into my account the money was there.

    Transfer to another bank acc.

Which is the same as any other standard savings account. Rabo is for savings rather than to use as a current account.

I rang Rabo, they said it will take 10 working days for the 30 euro to appear in my account. Panic averted!

I signed up a couple of years back and initially they only lodged €20... I sent them an email I think it was and they altered it... so just in case anybody only gets €20 just email saying it should have been €30.

Nothing like a bit of free money!

Just to add more reassurance, this worked for me as well, 30 quid free (with a little bit of photocopying and mailing of documents)

    Nice one, thanks OP!!

    Folks,

It's kind of ambiguous on the form.. but do you need to get your ID document stamped by a Garda (or other listed authorisers)? It says you either do this or send in a clear photocopy of your form, can you just do the latter?

It says you need to send in a stamped document OR a photocopy AND a current account bank statement. I read it the same as you at the start. Hope this helps.

The Gardai won’t stamp it so no point in wasting your time as I found out yesterday
