The exams are very important but it's also important not to stress too much and to make room for other stuff.
In this thread simply talk about what you like to do in your spare time or post links of stuff that you found amusing!
    But still work hard!
    I'll start!:

I think the pre's are supposed to be harder than the actual Junior cert so as to scare you into doing more study.

You don't have to know the whole course to pass, just keep working hard over the 6 days, get enough sleep and stay off the internet.. good luck!

Hi, not sure what thread to post this so sorry if its in the wrong thread!

But how much homework/study is recommended for us at this stage?

I do lots of extra curricular activities and often dont get home till 6:30, so manage about 2 hours homework (we get loads) and about 30 mins study MAX daily.. I try catch up on the weekends but still feel like I really should be doing more!
Any replies would be gratefully appreciated

My school is sooo stupid! Seriously, I get so much homework, it even takes me up to 5hrs a day and that's why I dont have time to study, I dont do any activities but I would love to, unfortunately no time, and they also expect us to go for a walk, catch some fresh air, go to bed EARLY - hahaha, with so much stuff to do I go to bed at 1 or 2 am! I have no life, seriously, and my school is up to 4pm but I get home after 5 because i have to take a bus which comes once every half an hour! its soo stupid! :( and i really want to do good but you see, you just cant! :(

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 620 ✭✭✭MomijiHime

We get barely any homework but are expected to study a lot. 5 hours is ridiculous though.. We're told to do 2-2.5 hours of homework a day (that's including study, revision, written etc.). I go to after school study for 2 hours everyday and I just study then and do my homework when I get home and still manage to get to bed at about 10p.m.. Does doing a lot of homework help you study?

I'm similar, but then the opposite to you. As in, I do about 2, maybe 2 1/2 hours daily of hw plus study, but most of what I do is hw, not study :( Wish we got no homework because then we could just study and I don't know about anyone else, but I do learn a good bit more doing study than homework...

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 270 ✭✭MinnieMouse15

I don't think my homework helps me to study, its usually off-topic and irrelevant to JC, f.e. in maths we do questions on geometry from the book and we are far behind etc and its all really simple and in my opinion we should concentrate on harder stuff and JC questions since we're HL! Seriously, we get like essays each night but I would love to study!

"Study study study study study study study study study study study study study study study study study study study study study study study study study study study study"

Am I the only person who can't bring themselves to care about the Junior Cert? I could spend five hours a day memorizing all the necessary facts for the exams and ace all of them. For what? Inflating my ego? The Junior Cert is meaningless.

Then why are you in a junior cert forum? The Junior cert gives you practice for the leaving cert which is important if you want to get into college and get a good job and money. If you do well in your junior cert you can get into higher level leaving cert subjects and get better results in the leaving cert. I'll admit, I do want to feel good about myself getting good results but I also want to make my parents proud and make sure they don't worry about me. Plus, I want to be educated. If you're not studying or working hard on something else like art or sport what are you doing? As much as I really love going online, it does you no good in life. You have to balance out fun and work.
And if you decide you want to go to college in the UK or Scotland, they look at your Junior cert results because you're leaving cert results aren't out yet by then.
The Junior cert isn't meaningless, if you want to waste the opportunity, go ahead.

    Your completely right
    But......
In a job opportunity or meeting all they care about is your skills/grades as far as lc results and college etc.
They would not give a damn about the JC
same as England they won't care they will just have to wait until your lc results come out

I'm on a Junior Cert forum to read the opinions of others and express my own.
Practice for the Leaving Cert: All the regular exams; Leaving Cert Past Papers. No?
I never said the Leaving Cert wasn't important, but considering the layout is extremely simple and enough practice is given from past papers, the Junior Cert isn't necessary to be capable of comprehending the Leaving Cert layout. Why should a Junior Cert be required to determine one's abilities? We have consistent exams all year round. Forcing people to take part in a memory game proves nothing about a person's intelligence or capabilities, only mindless, possibly slavish, determination.

"Plus I want to be educated". Irrelevant to Junior Cert? I not only learn a lot from school, but from self education. The Junior Cert isn't a device to educate people, it's a futile exercise. "You have to balance out fun and work". I agree. The Junior Cert knocks it out of proportion and necessity.

"As much as I really love going online, it does you no good in life." Let's not squabble on something quite as speculative as that.

If you want to waste portions of your life on tasks so laborious yet trivial, be my guest. I intend to live every spare moment of my own how I see fit.

As I said elsewhere, the HL JC course in many subjects, is the OL LC course.
It might be cool to say the JC doesn't matter, but the reality is that it does.
Not as much as many people make out, but it is in no way 'meaningless'.

Anybody recommended a revision book for HL French?

Or know which is better: "revise wise" or "less stress more success" ?

    Thanks

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 270 ✭✭MinnieMouse15

i have revise wise and i would really recommend it to you, but the problem for me is when they give you sample letters, formal letters, postcards and notes they're all very long with many unrelevant information while my french teacher said you only need about 2 sentences for each point they give you for the letter. you dont even need to fill in every single space :) anyone could recommend me an idea on how to study listening in french, im sooo bad at it, i know the vocab but i just cant seem to hear them say the words! i'm so lost and im going to fail that exam, comprehension and writing is kind of easy for me,you can always guess, but i simply hate the listening exam!

I do German, but same concept. Do Aural tests at home, from past papers (your exam papers should have a CD on it)

Listen to french radio, you'll start to pick up the colloquial after a while, which may be useful in the listening and the letter ;D

You can also watch french TV and practise your pronunciation, so that you can recognise what they say easier, try improve your speed!

    The Plantations are very simple.
Before - almost exclusively Catholic land owners, allegiance to local leaders, speaking Irish and following Irish customs and laws.
After - majority of land in Protestant hands, allegiance to English throne, speaking English and following English customs and laws.

my mocks start tomorrow and i'm been told not to worry because "you have a competition on wednesday". nonetheless, i am now having an absolute spaz attack while whacking myself in the head with my english exam papers.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 348 ✭✭AulBiddy

Anyone starting their mocks tomorrow - DON'T FREAK OUT!
I studied for my mocks and ended up with nearly everything D's, and everyone around me was getting b's and c's and some A's.. I felt so craaap! It was a good kick up the backside, and I did all my subjects at honours level and I ended up with 9 honours and 3 passes so please, PLEASE don't be upset if the mocks work out, they're there to give you an idea of what the real exams are like and to see what levels you would like to take before filling out the levels form which is the last change you can make - you can't change them back.
Get enough sleep tonight, take breaks from studying every half hour, try make a reward system out of it - do an English comprehension and you can go on the internet or something like that!
Bring water to your exam, it will honestly help, the rooms you do exams in will probably have the heating on which can make you feel really sleepy and the water will wake you up and of course give you something to keep you busy with pre exam or during exam nerves! (Don't drink it all in one go though, just small sips, they don't let you leave exams to use the toilet unless it's an emergency, at least my school didn't).
Don't do what loads of people (including myself) did last year and try to cram until about 1 a.m, going into exams tired doesn't work, and cramming until 1 a.m doesn't work either - you're too overtired to take in any information and you'll forget most of it!
Organize your pens and pencils. Keep a set of colours with you as well during exams, you will probably need them for science and geography.
Don't eat too much the night before or in the morning if you are feeling nervous - In the morning if you're not feeling too well chew some gum to keep your mind off it. But don't eat nothing , that's just as bad! Please, please don't get so nervous you get sick! And tell the supervisor before you go in if you really don't feel well , he/she might give you some leeway and let you start your exam a little bit later or will allow you to leave your exam without question if you feel you're going to be sick.
Don't bring your mobile phone in to the exam. 3 people got caught last year with them when they went off. Keep it at home or really make sure your phone is on silent.
Don't feel pressured by other people. If people are saying they didn't study at all, or they studied so much their brain swelled by 10 percent, don't listen to them, they're probably lying. Don't disclose how much you studied because it's just kind of silly and of course, quality, not quantity ;)
Girls with long hair - tie it up. Seriously you will thank me :P
When you get home from exams get a good sleep! Take a power nap and get your dinner, then sit down to study. You will feel a lot better than coming in, and getting straight to the studying and falling asleep midway! Like I said you won't take in anything if you're tired.
Shower in the morning, not at night, you can take your time in the morning instead of rushing around at night to get your study done and what not.
Everyone looks rougher than usual doing their exams so don't be worried about spots and all. Try keep foundation to a minimum or use tinted moisturizer and a bit of concealer because foundation will just encourage more spots when you're under stress.

Okay very very long but if you TL;DR - Don't get too upset over the mocks. :P

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 270 ✭✭MinnieMouse15

    ^ THIS!
You are so good for writing it. Mine start in 3 weeks, I'll be ok.
I'll just add that really REALLY don't bring your phones. My teacher said that if you get caught, they need to take your phone and post it with your exam to correct and you will never see it again. This is because they will want to see if there was anything on your phone that you could use to cheat. So just watch out for that. Also, it's just mocks. No one will ever ask you, when you're an adult, what you got in mocks or JC?! It's just to see where you're at and what you would like to do for the LC which is very important but since I won't be doing TY if I do bad in LC as in if I don't get enough points for Medicine then I'll repeat the LC and I will keep repeating it until I get it, that's the goal! so don't worry if you fail once, try try again. Don't give up easily. And don't think about the exam when it's over. Never check the answers in the book - if you got it right in the exam. The answer might be wrong and then you'll be so upset for loosing points. Just if anyone asks say it was hard or i did my best whatever the truth is and just forget about it. I made that mistake lots of times and I couldnt sleep as i was trying to work out if i still got an A with such a mistake etc.
    Once again, GOOD LUCK

That cram bit seems to be an exception for me....I've crammed every single exam I've done and have a high A rate (Other than English and Religion).

I shower at night, I'm fine.

It's the JC, huge percentages of people get As.
Don't expect the same to happen in the Leaving.
