    DIY folks..

Halfords are doing a decent special on their own brand oils. I cant find it on their website, but blanchardstown had bulkstacks just on the left as you walk in.

I picked up myself 8L of 5w-30 fully synth for €25 this morning. Decent enough deal.

    10w-40 semi
    5w-30 semi
    5w-30 fully

    And a few more grades... all €12.50 / 4L

Halfords 5W30 Fully Synthetic Motor Oil 4L - Vauxhall Opel
    Was 47.99
    Now 12.50

    There's also a "Ford" 5w30 for 12.50

I would have nearly thought so too. Either way very good offer OP. Many thanks for sharing.

None. I think they just put makes on the stickers to make it easier for customers to get what they want. Any "first time buyer" driving ford will go for this one rather than one-for-all solution.

There's a little cap on Audi's that pops open if you put the other stuff in.. its very clever..

Well for modern VWs your supposed to use 5W30 that's VAG 504/507 standard approved. The VW oil in halfords would specifically state that, the others probably don't. They could be the same but there are different grades of 5W30, it's not all identical.

How is it possible that major brands don't limit using their oil on different makes/models?

No! You have to look at the ACEA classification as well. For example diesel cars with particulate filters in the exhaust require a low-ash oil, VWs with the PDi engine require an oil with high shear strength because the injection pumps are driven by sliding cams, and conversely some engines that are designed for fuel economy require an oil with a lower shear strength. It's all in the world's least-read publication: The Driver's Handbook.

    Nope, 1.5 Almera.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 3,327 ✭✭✭Merch

    Nope, 1.5 Almera.

it came up here on another thread, less oil than some Micra engines.

Its in different containers, 4L instead of 5, still, I got a few.

Halfords has a handy guide to what is the minimum required and preferred option, and a mobil option of oil grade.
If its an older car I wouldn't be too choosy, have put cheapest 10W40 into an older Micra annually without a bother.
But have always used the right grade and spec of oil for otherwise.

Can't say I'm overly impressed with their oil suggestions on the website. Just for fun I put our yoke into it and got recommended ...

Halfords 15W/40 Enhanced Mineral Diesel Oil 5L
    Cat. code: 166611-0
The Halfords 15W/40 Enhanced Mineral Diesel Oil is suitable for most non turbo diesel engines.

Halfords 15W/40 Part Synthetic Oil 1L
    Cat. code: 257683-0
The Halfords 15W/40 Part Synthetic Oil is suitable for most non fuel injected engines where synthetic protection is preferred.

These were for a 3.2 D-iD turbo diesel :pac:

Would anyone know what oil a 01 Focus 1.8 TDCI takes?

I might drop in after work to pick some up if it is suitable.

(i presume it is 5W30 semi-synth but I dont have the manual with me to check)

Opie oils seem to be recommending ACEA A1 which can't be right because that is for economy petrol engines.
    http://www.opieoils.co.uk/
I think in your case I would use an ACEA B3 oil which is designed for performance or long-drain diesel engines, unless you have a particulate filter in which case you should use ACEA C1, C2 or C3.

    5w30 is the correct grade.

Any 5w30 semi or fully synthetic is perfect for that engine.

    Same for a 04 2.0tdci mondeo George.??

Picked up 2 x 4 litres containers as the focus take 5.6L's.

    Thanks for the tip OP

I would recommend spending the extra few quid on fully synthetic for your engine Sean. The 1.8 is a very old design and is as basic as they come but your engine is far from basic.

Probably yes (Castol.com says you need 6litres 5w30), but its not the Ford focused (not a pun!) version, which might be fine, someone more familiar with your diesel block should know if it has specific or special requirements (again Castrol's what oil search doesnt seem to think so).

04 is 9 years nearly, I think semi synthetic would be ok for them.
The Fully synthetic ford spec oil wasnt on sale (unlike the vauxhall/opel fully synthetic). A more expert opinion, or even someone that has looked at the specs might say otherwise, but if its changed regularily or sooner than recommended, Id say it'd be no problem.
Having said that, Im not 100% certain what the Diesel oil spec for Fords is, mines a petrol, so I got a few semi synthetics containers for my car, one needed soon and put the other one away.

    sean1141 wrote: »

Id say It would probably be ok, it says its suitable for petrol/diesel. if you really want to know, try google/look up the spec of what you need for your Diesel and what the spec of this oil is. Reading up on them will tell you if this is ok. I got a few of these for the other half's car, but its also a petrol.

the only problem is the oil on offer is in 4L containers, some cars are gonna need more than that for a fill.

Picked up a lash of it. Changed my car today, will do hers soon. That accounts for near enough to 3 containers. Got another for top ups.

I was in a similar position a few years ago, got one of the suction yokes. You're in Cork City?? Welcome to use it if so :)

I asked about those suction devices on another thread a few weeks ago, and was advised against them. Can't remember the reasons exactly. Thanks for the offer. Are they just as good? Will have a look for that thread now.

Debatable, depends on the shape of the sump and the actual plug location, looking at some of them from underneath it's obvious enough there's going to be a half litre or so of oil etc at the bottom when drained.

Using a suction yoke can't get it all out either.

The likes of the PSA 1.6 diesel is not at all suitable for them, one of the mechanics on here posted a tech bulletin to that effect a couple of years back, crucial to allow all oil to drain out.

Dunno about Saab tbh, I suppose with the potential sludge issue it may be better or worse.

I use the suction yoke seldomly but it's handy at times, if you're stuck PM me anyway.

.... the Carisma the sister picked up last year had a "welded" sump plug, used it for that :)

Thanks a lot James. Will see what they say about using them on my engine. Handy to know there's a plan B, if all else fails. Another guy had the same problem as me (same engine) and he had to spray WD40 on the plug for a few days prior to giving it a second go and it worked. The plug is made of aluminium, and very easy to round. Others have the same problems on the 1.9 vectra diesel trying to get the plug off, same engine. Google will show this. I bought a fumoto valve, so will not have this problem once/if I get this bugger off.

Will give you a shout if going to plan b.

Can I use the Opel one, in an Audi?

Depends on the engine and the age of the car. If it's got the PD diesel engine I would say no.

Have a look for Plus Gas. It laughs at WD40.

    EDIT: Here it is http://www.handyhardware.ie/product/11202/801-10-Plusgas-Aerosol-200ml

    Expensive, but very effective.

400ml bottle here for £4. http://www.amazon.co.uk/English-Abrasives-801-10-Plusgas-Aerosol/dp/B0001P02RA/ref=sr_1_2?ie=UTF8&qid=1357330617&sr=8-2 Will give it a shot. Very handy to have that lying around anyway.
