    Hi All,

I just picked up the tv below in the Currys sale for €499. Seems good value to me anyway €220 off the previous price. It certainly was the best deal I saw around this morning...

That looks a very good deal!

There was some seriously good deals in Currys I must say, I was in Harvey Norman before hand and even with their "Big Sale" a lot of tv's were still significantly higher in price than Currys.

It's tough choosing between all the TV options on sale today. I'm in the market for a new TV around 40" or so and can't figure out what to go with. SMART TV seems like it gives you a few nice options built in as opposed to going via a PS3 or similar. 3D I'm not sure I'd bother with, but seems to come on a fair few of them. Anyone any thoughts on which of these truly is the best BA?

    1) The cheap one from Curry's. 42" Full HD LED LG TV. Does the essentials but limited number of connection ports on it, a little more "thick" and dated looking (Don't think that really matters but worth noting) plus 50Hz. € 399

    2) The 47" 3D SMART LED LG TV from Curry's. € 799

    3) Currys had a 42" Smart 50Hz LG LED Full HD TV (no 3D) for around € 530.

    4) Power City 42" Full HD SMART LED LG 200Hz € 623.

    4) Power City 40" Full HD SMART 3D LED Samsung 200Hz € 699

    5) Power City 42" Full HD 3D SMART LED LG 400Hz € 699

I know I'm not quite comparing apples with apples, but any thoughts? I'm thinking the € 399 is cheapest but might regret not having more connectivity on it and SMART TV features. Then I wonder if I'm going SMART should I just go the whole hog and get 3D?

Snap (almost), that's the guy I'm looking at, same price in PowerCity and DID, due to space restriction that's about the max dimension we can go for.
Are you happy with it so far? seems to have pretty good meta rating on Amazon.

Have a look at the TV thread in the Talk to....Currys/PCWorld forum. In the first post by Declan there's a list of their best offers. They have a very good LG 32in for €299.0 which may be of interest. I have the precurser to that tv, and its a damn good piece of kit.

I was in Currys today in Blanchardstown...no real bargains to speak of.

Not a proper sales event with regards the 32 inch TVs....Currys and Harvey Normans are both the same......no real sales event or anything special in 32 inch TVs and their prices

My take on SMART tv is that will be redundant in a year or two as standards are still developing. I think it will end up being a case of getting new android set top box/stick coming out every year or two to keep up. I know my brothers 2 year old smart TV has youtube and thats it, no RTE player, 4od, Netflix etc. Considering other company's are going to compete with netflix too I think the custom coded smart TV software just won't be able to keep the pace.

I'd disagree. Smart TV's will be around for a long time. Granted a smart TV from two years ago might not get updated via firmware or might not be able to handle the latest things like web browsing but the likes of the new Samsung TV's have netflix, lovefilm, bbcPlayed 4od etc etc

As an early-adopter of a Philips internet TV exactly 3 years ago in the old Philips Shop sale I tend to agree.....paid 900 for a 42'' at the time.

To be fair to Declan, I think that's simply a case of getting your wires crossed - Their main TV Deal is for the 42" LG @ €399 (which is full HD) and I'd wager that was the set he had in mind when replying to you.

What happens when blinkbox, tescos new streaming thing becomes all the rage, or something else ? Maybe netflix will upgrade there security when somebody figures out how to get it for free. You will be relying on LG/Samsung etc to update the firmware on a 2012 model tv come 2013, or 2014. Meanwhile at LG HQ they see 30 different models, with 30 different CPU's, 30 different firmwares, they are just going to walk away, there is no sort of standard or platform across the manufacturers. Its the same story as feature phones before android, and even android phones themselves, how many phones are stuck on android 1.5/2.1/2.3 ? At least phones get replaced fairly often, I know I expect at least 5 years from my tellys.

May as well keep the cash in your pocket for the moment, I use my PS3 at the moment, no doubt I will be using my PS4 or some kind of android box in another 2 years time while I keep the PS3 in the attic for retro kudos.

Thanks for people's feedback/thoughts on the whole SMART thing. I was thinking along similar lines myself, but the problem for me is also the connections. Seems like if you go for the more "basic" TV without SMART and/or 3D then it's deemed to be more entry level by the manufacturer and therefore less other features.

    Decisions, decisions......

I think the LG tv for 399 is good price for 42" LED. It has 2Hdmi, 1 scard, 1 composite and usb ports. You can get a cheap port switcher to add more if you need to.

Motion rate it the most important factor for me. You are never going to be able to keep up with the latest gadgets. Sure even a laptop is outdated these days after a couple of years.

I went for a 3D tv not for the 3D (rarely used tbh) but because it had a 400 hz refresh rate. Plus I can attach a usb drive and the TV will play anything I have thrown at it so far.

I think most people recommend at least 100hz for sport etc

How much extra are you paying for a smart tv? An Apple TV or boxee can be added for 100 euro. UPC and Sky have recently added plenty of features to there box such as the players etc.

Or an XBox - loads of features on that now also. Sky, Facebook, Twitter, Web Browsing, Netflix, Youtube, Xbox movie rentals and gesture navigation if you have a Kinect!

The 42 inch for 399 is what I would get if I was buying but if you can afford more than good for you. From what little I know HD or HD ready are the same thing and it's the hz that matter, 400 good, 50 not as good

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 30,475 ✭✭✭✭Ghost Train

Full hd would be much better for blu ray and probably look a bit better for 720p content too up close

Plasma and LCD are different when it comes to hz. You can't compare them, 400 in an LCD is extremely rare, where as 400 in a plasma is very basic

Well in fairness here (from the customers point of view)......you should have the facts right before going and teling people that a product is this and that when its clearly not.

People will part with hard earned cash on the basis of what the chap says...yet he is giving out false information and false advice to customers.

    Not good.:(

Have an LG bought over the summer, if you use plex on the pc to stream the media you should have no problems . have run bluray rips with no problems 2gb+. Also dependant on the router that you're using and the # of other people using it at the time

Not great but mistakes do happen. Declan will go above and beyond in all cases. If someone has bought it and found it is not what it should have been he said in another thread that he will take returns. More then a lot of companies would do

To be honest I am not really sure it comes into it. You will pay more for a TV with an inbuilt web cam and the same for in built wifi (versus wifi enabled) but for the "apps" it is hard to say as the TV's seem to be priced more by series. Like do you pay more now for Saorview technology?

I'll admit I am a bit of a Samsung fan boy :) and their TVs, leaving aside size and LED/LCD etc are done by series 4 to 9 I think and then within that you have a sub series such as 5500 or 5800 etc. The bottom of the range might not have an ethernet connection while the top of the range will have nearly every thing.

I think the SMART TVs will be more or less a standard like electric windows on a car versus in built sat nav.

I also have about 4 media players such as WDTV live and Asus O player and since my Samsung TVs have a DLNA I just read directly from the TV to my NAS box or PC. I rarely use the media players bar when I want to watch subtitled films. But in saying that having used one of the current generation Samsung SMART TV's over the crimbo (UE40ES5500?) it has very good subtitle facilities versus my 2 year old one.

Recently though I updated the firware on one of my Samsung TV's and it now has fairly decent subtitle abilities.

An important indicator of the quality of service a business delivers can be found by examining how that company reacts to concerns and complaints addressed them by their own customers.

Even a perfunctory glance at the Currys forum would leave most with the impression that their business is highly valued by the Managing Director, their concerns are addressed and acted upon in a timely manner and anything which falls below expected standards of customer care are routinely put right.

    That's good enough for me.

I went in to Currys this afternoon and the 42" LGs are all gone. I wouldn't mind but the guy on the Currys forum made it sound like they had plenty.

Often I think they make these claims of stock availability just to get you into the store. The staff were useless also.
