I thought the Christmas show was much better than the Christmas Eve show.

The Royle Family Christmas Special FTW. Brilliant!!

Wasn't impressed with last nights too soppy. Tonights was very funny except for the singing at the end.

Angel Buster saved it for me :)
Loved when he was just hanging from the thing unconcious

I thought it was awful. I can't believe it took them 2 years to come out with that tripe. But then I just don't like the character of Joe that much.

about as funny as cancer, pile of cack, painful muck

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,097 ✭✭✭roanoke

Tonight was my first time being exposed to this tripe.

It was like a show created by someone who'd seen a few eps of Father Ted and Extras and thought it'd be a good idea to make a mishmash rip-off of both without actually understanding the underlying humour of either. Throw in a few f-bombs to paper over the cracks and away you go.

I was speaking to a few Australians and they love the crudity of it. There is a world wide audience for this BS it seems.

    Are you serious?

    The Royle Family was awful.

Not a patch on what that show used to be. Should be put to bed.

Brilliant series, There making a games show out of it this year as well. Can't wait. If ye don't like it why do ye continue to watch it and make threads about it and feel how you think you need to comment on every episode and how "crap it is".

I thought both shows were disappointing as well.. There certainly good jokes in there but a LOT of lazy, cliché jokes, the northern woman is horrifically wooden, the storylines are extremely simplistic like they are written for kid's TV... Seems like the public will lap up anything they put on at the moment, but they could actually make it a good show with better writing.

I think the main reason people like the show is because its simplistic.

    True that.

My biggest problem with it though is this - even within the broad and bawdy genre it inhabits, it lacks the charm, wit and craft of many of its precursors on British TV.

    Ooooo how would this work?
They all go to Butlins for Christmas or something?
Cheryl is finally getting married and the Browns are some of her relatives?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 9,844 ✭✭✭py2006

Have to agree, the Christmas special was very poor. I was never a huge fan of Brendan O'Carroll but I did warm to the series alright and it did have some very funny moments. However, those two shows were very poor by comparison.

Hopefully, the new series will be good.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 18,066 ✭✭✭✭Happyman42

Fair play to O'Carroll for finding a way to play and get paid for these hackneyed old jokes, but the whole concept just doesn't have any charm, it has fake charm but that's not the same thing. The second one was positvely missable!

Yep, it's long since departed from what made it great.

A few good lines but overall, it was shíte.

MBB was absolutely awful this time around (and I don't mind that show, it is what it is)

Come to think of it there was one joke that I didn't get. Something about a guy opening a newsagents and the other saying he always wanted to be a shepherd.

What was that about? I'm afraid that was a bit too high brow and intellectual for me.

How dare RTE show that filthy show at Christmas! Its just a load of dirty double meaning rubbish. Brendan O' Carroll is just a dirty little man with dirty little mind. I now see that RTE have sold that filth to the BBC - shame on them! Mrs Brown's Boys feed into all the stereotypes of the drunken, foul-mouthed, dirty Irish. What an embarrassment to the decent Irish people living in the UK.

It's actually the BBC the make it and RTE get it off them!

Easy known RTE are up their b****cks in debt with the awful Christmas TV schedule and Mrs Browns Boys is just cheap and tacky.Brendan at least has kept his untalented and unfunny wife, family and in laws off the dole with the show.
Apparently it is quite popular in the UK

Indeed, I thought it was about as funny as being told you have bowel cancer but others in my family insisted on watching the whole thing and laughed like drains through it.

If you actually read what my post you would have noticed l referred to RTE's Christmas schedule and furthermore the show is a co-production made by BBC Scotland,Bocpix and RTE so what are you on about!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 254 ✭✭dom40

AFAIK,Its a joint venture between RTE and the BBC,

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 254 ✭✭dom40

The reason why people like it is because its simple, not professional actors, family made show. It has a huge fan base and is funny.

The reason a lot of people like it is because it's made for simple people. That's not an insult, it's just that a lot of people haven't got the intelligence for proper comedy shows like Seinfeld or Curb Your Enthusiasm.

    "He can be a shepherd.
Ah great he used to work in a newsagents."

Now I think that's what the joke was, so can anybody help us get it?
Is it just that Buster doesn't know what a shepherd is? Or is it a cynical dig at the media and people following the news being sheep? Ha?

I wonder how many of that 9million just happened (like me) to be sitting in the room when it was on and absolutely hated it and would have to be held at gunpoint to even entertain the notion of ever watching it again? I'd guess a good 5-6 million (hopefully).
