    lol :pac:

Imo a second hand diesel Octavia is as overpriced as any VW such is the demand for them.

Surely the demand is high because they're an excellent all round car?

Are you asking me? As you disagree with pretty much all of my points I can't see why you'd be asking me anything tbh.

As I've said imo they're as overpriced 2nd hand as any VW, due no doubt to demand, demand driven by many who don't really have a clue what value is.

Regarding them being an excellent all round car they are much in the same way the Carina was imo, the Carina of the 90s looked a lot better though :)

    lets keep it civil guys

Good luck with the new car looters. Neighbour of mine went looking for a good value 09 Octavia but ended up getting a Jetta much cheaper. Demand for the octy is pretty high from people looking for a bit of value,

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 11,865 ✭✭✭✭MuppetCheck

Jettas are the forgotten VAG at the moment. Prices are in fact lower than Octavias all too often and they are a much nicer place to spend time in. Worth a look if you're spending 12k on an octavia...

I wouldnt ever buy anything from Volswaken because Id be imbarrassed to have a car with that brand on it to be honest.

You'd pay more for a skoda because vws are overpriced?

Just curious as to why you'd be embarrassed by the vw badge (I'm not exactly a vw fan but I'm curious as to why you'd be so enthusiastic about one product of their marketing and so dead set against another)

But as was mentioned just a while ago, you'll pay a premium for a skoda in a lot of cases these days

As in, jettas are often cheaper than Octavias

Nothing against skodas or anything by the way. Just trying to see your reasoning.

If you could a jetta cheaper than the equivelant octy, would you still be embarrassed to drive a vw?

But a elegance spec Octavia has a lot more extras than most jettas. The vast majority of jettas don't even have fog lights or air conditioning. I wouldn't say octavias are overpriced my dad bought a 2005 new model ambiente spec a couple of months ago with had a new clutch and dmf and timming belt just fitted and he paid tiny money for it it even has nice 16 inch skoda alloys which I don't think came standard on them. I'd certainly prefere a skoda Octavia over a Jetta. In my opinion vw are overpriced and completely overrated anyone I know with a vw it seems to spend more time in the garage than on the road. That's just my outlook on it. our octavias are only ever in the garage to get a standard service.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,302 ✭✭✭Supergurrier

Jetta and Octavia are mechanically the same so that arguement is kind of silly and only goes to show that Skoda's advertising campaign is working as intended

    Exactly.

VW's are for the clueless people out there.
You only have to look at all those golfs out there, all they are is trouble and trouble at a high price..

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 73,545 ✭✭✭✭colm_mcm

'Most' jettas are basic, so are 'most' octavias.

So you'd rather have a mechanically identical Skoda?

The vast majority of all octavias sold in Ireland were ambient spec or higher. I will agree that the ambient spec is far from top spec it still has trip computer, alloys fog lights electric windows mirrors etc. you can still easily pick up a elegance spec they are far from gold dust and for 12k you will get elegance spec. I really don't know about the jettas spec but any Jetta I have ever seen was basic probably less than a quarter of jettas had fog lights which is quite a basic thing on a car of its price but obviously a classic spec Octavia had nothing on it but I doubt anyone is going to spend 12k on a classic Octavia and few were sold in Ireland anyway.

    Skoda is basically VW.

Sure the B 5.5 passat is identical to the Superb.

    Wouldn't most 2012 Octavias be 1.6 TDI?

Or are you thinking of getting a different engine in it?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 14,403 ✭✭✭✭jimmycrackcorm

Volkswagens and Toyotas are two brands I'd never buy. Basic and practical is all.

3.5k euro late 2005 160k km. but if you seen the car it is pristine no marks scratches. You would buy them cheaper but this one had everything done to it in terms of timming belt was changed, brake pads done it also has full skoda service history. Probably mightened seem really cheap on paper but my dad choose to pay a bit more for a really well minded car.

Has the OP actually owned an Octavia at any stage ? I had one for 5 years and while it was an ok car the spec/build quality was nothing compared to the Passat/A4 of the same generation

The thing I really dont like about VWs mainly is that they are in fashion right now.

People will pay silly prices for the car, just because it has a badge on it. They wont listen when I tell them how pointless it is.

You can't really compare a Octavia to a passat a4 as a Octavia is 22k new for top spec a passat a4 is at least 32k euro.

What are you talking about? You're saying you wouldn't want the VW label because they're overpriced. Yet you're willing to pay more for an octavia over a jetta, despite the fact they're pretty much the same car with both the entry level models having similar spec? Madness.

But have you not read the post pointing out that a Jetta, which is on the same chassis as a Skoda is cheaper at the moment?

Budget is 12k OP isn't buying a new car regardless, but hey maybe they can drive one of each and actually make up theie mind that way w/o going on a reverse badge snobbery rant that makes no sense :pac:

What you all have to realise is it comes down to knowing class.

Having driven both I can tell you that VW are very poor cars. The Octavias are the best and most affordable diesels out there though.

I don't really think jettas are that much cheaper over octavias. Ultimately octavias are still a great value diesel and if you want to buy a elegance spec Octavia you will be long time looking for the equivalent spec Jetta which is cheaper than an Octavia. Maybe if you compare bottom spec cars the Jetta would be cheaper due to the fact that most jettas sold were base mid specs at best. I don't think the op is looking for a basic car and imagine the op want to spend 12k on an elegance spec Octavia with all the bells and whistles.

I test drove a leon while owning a golf and preferred the leon by a country mile.

+1 for the Japanese reliability angle. Hard to beat Toyota or Nissan in those stakes, almost bulletproof.

Not so sure that the VW brand as a whole can be written off as crap though :o
