So you hear some folk say "I don't like cats, they're selfish, dogs are loyal" and the reverse I've heard said too, "Cats are independent and clever, dogs are dumb and needy".

Well I reckon opinions like that reveal more about the persons character than the natural characteristics of an animal...what ya reckon?

    I completely agree.

When someone doesn't like cats, my I instantly lose a bit if respect for them. Especially if they feel cats are untrustworthy or "evil".

I reckon that people that reckon opinions like that reveal more about the persons character than the natural characteristics of an animal actually reveal more about the persons character than the person who prefers one animal over the other.

I do love them both but cats are bast*rds, they always break my heart by just disappearing without a trace, then they just walk back into your life as if nothing happened and think we can carry on as it was, i don't think so, i have too much respect for myself to be treated like that.

I don't like cats or dogs, or any animal for that fact. I don't like calling to someone who has a cat or dog in the house, my clothes are full of cat/dog hair after sitting on their couch. Disgusting to say the least.

I don't get how a person can "love" one and "hate" another.

cats are untrustworthy and evil, they will eat you if you die in their presence, dogs will just protect, I know someone and their house was getting robbed, the cat ran to the front and meooowed, it never phased the burglar.

I don't dislike cats I just prefer dogs.

I know someone who was attacked and savaged by their own dog, how's that for untrustworthy and evil?
I know someone who was upstairs when they heard their cat bawling and screaming at the window outside downstairs and when they went down to see what the fuss was they found the dinner was burning in the oven.
Everyone has loads of stories like these.

I prefer dogs, they are just more fun.

I find cats to be more chewy than dogs. Frank's sauce helps though.

Funny OP, I had a similar thought and discussion recently. I always hear people saying they love dogs but not cats becuase cats are selfish etc. I thought it was a selfish comment. A dog gives so much love but not cats, it's no reason to 'hate' them.

    I like both.

I prefer cats, but I recognise that this is just a personal preference and does not make any kind of statement about me or people who prefer other pets. Or no pets.

You can prefer one to the other alright, I prefer cats but like dogs. Some cats are assholes, some dogs are too. Cats can be hilarious though, a box and laser pointer= endless entertainment.

Dogs are the number one pet between Ireland and England, so you can understand as to how there is so much love towards them. As for cats , im not a big fan tbh!

Indeed, I wont go too much into what I do for a living, but there seems to be a greater love for dogs and a deep dislike/hate for cats held by people who are a bit more "vunerable", shall we say.

I think that an intense dislike either way, might reveal elements of a persons characteristics or life experience...

I used to be a big cat person, but now I am a dog person, though I would never say no to a cat. I love them too, but not as much these two sausages!

Cats are cool until they put their ass all up in your face.

Dogs are cool until they hump and jizz on your leg.

I like cats AND dogs, but this Christmas we are sticking to Turkey.

People who don't like cats generally don't have any real experience of them. Having a "pet" cat that you occasionally see on the windowsill isn't having a pet. What's the point?

People with the usual (Irish) experience of cats are amazed when they see our cats playing and being affectionate and having individual personalities.

Any cat that gets plenty of attention and human contact from kitten-hood will have a personality to match any dog.

It's like feral children versus "normal" children.

Thats your opinion of those who dislike cats? That they're vulnerable? No judgement there at all.

Comments like the above reveal quite a bit about a persons characteristics too.

I like cats and dogs, but prefer dogs. Cats are fun, but stupid in comparison.

I agree with this entirely. We always had dogs growing up but I was given a stray kitten and I can honestly say my cat is more affectionate than any dog we had. They all have their own unique personalities and if they are given time and affection you will always get that back.

As soon as I hear of any:

    Police Cats,
    Search And Rescue Cats,
    Drug Cats,
    Guard Cats,
    Seeing Eye cats,
    Hearing Assist Cats or
    Bomb sniffing cats,

I'll revise my opinion of how smart they are.

That's is interesting, tone is very difficult to assess in posts, I think it causes a lot of ill feeling at times. However, you seem to interpreted it in one way, now the question is are you right or wrong.

Before I got my cat flap my cat would just sit on the front door step and howl until I got up and let him in. When I was lying in at the weekend he would jump onto the bed and shriek at me until I got up and fed him.

Cat had more smarts than I do.

    Hate cats
    Their sneaky little ba5tards
    Dogs are real pets
    Obedient and loving
Most people will feel a lot safer having a dog in the house rather than a cat
I'd rather have my ferrets in the house than a poxy cat

Cats are vermin. They're for people who don't really want to look after a pet but want to be able to tell everyone that they're an animal lover.

'I love the way my pet goes off for days at a time', said no normal person, ever.

TBF not all cat owners let their pet roam free, causing problems for other people. Some owners are responsible and do not let their cat out to roam.

How come cat lovers never hate dogs but loads of dog lovers hate cats?!

My conclusion is that cat people are actually animal lovers and dog people who hate cats are untrustworthy psychopathic freaks.

    It's scientific, innit.

I love cats, I feel like i can understand them.

It might be due to the fact that our family always owned a cat while I was growing up.

I like dogs as well, they're more fun than cats, although they require more effort to keep!

What does my opinion says about me? I guess I'm a sneaky, selfish introvert who doesn't want to rely on anyone :D

I don't think it says much in general; yeah of course it says something about you as a subject; however, I don't think that can then be transfered to all cat owners.

I was a meeting one day, someone felt they needed to add that the client keep snakes; and that this implied
something sneaky about them. I asked then what did it say about me that I keep a dragon and that shut them up.

Keeping my pet says something about me, but that cannot be applied to others who keep dragons or other types of lizards.

To turn back to that meeting, all that person was doing was projecting her thoughts about those who kept snakes on to that client.

Edit: just seen that was your first post, you poor thing!! Welcome to boards

I love cats :) I like dogs as well, though sometimes find them a little needy, but that's just me.

People who don't like cats seem to resent the fact that they don't fawn over people as much as dogs do.

Cake, and grief counseling, will be available at the conclusion of the test
