Toyota Levin and save the extra money!

    1.6 165BHP and 6 speed :D

I always get about 40MPG out of mine too. I really don't think you can go faster for less money including buying the car, tax, servicing etc etc.

How about a R5 turbo....if you mind it - it will probably increase in value over the next 10 years

(lose the awful wheels and de-pimp it a bit and you have the perfect sleeper)

R5 Turbo is the one that I thought of, fats in a straight line and easily tuned.

Peugeot 205 Gti with the 1.6 engine, a good one won't lose it's value, which will more than offset the extra tax. Make sure it's accident free, be prepared to spend a few more quid on one that's been well looked after.

A well looked after Mazda MX-5 picked up at a proper price will hold it's value too, to hell with the image, they're a great drivers car.

Well an EK9 is definitely faster than the Cooper S.

This looks clean, bar the painted front grill.
There was an N1 floating around recently. If you can find it, get that!

106 gti 120 bhp realistically maybe a hundred after the few years wear..redicolously fast

Civic EK4 is fun too and a lot cheaper to insure than a EK9. Not a huge difference in power either.

This is true, doesn't take a lot to give it the same power either.

N1 should be quicker than cooper s and ek9. corsa opc should be within price range soon. one of those with a simple remap would be seriously quick!

Another car I just thought about
    What bout the daihatsu charade?
Drove one before and the speed is pretty ridiculous for a car of its size
Hard to find one in good condition tho

My son has a Golf Mk5 GT. It's 1.4 and delivers 170 BHP with a turbo and a supercharger... all standard kit. It feels like my other son's GTI to drive. Quick as sh¡t off a shovel. If you feel like taking it easy it's very economical as well.

OK guilty... here in Spain that would be doable. I'm not as clued up on the Irish market as I should be.

With the tax and petrol/maintenance costs of one of those things, you'd probably find it more affordable to drive a big petrol with a standard four stroke.

They're not as fragile as people like to think, just look after them as you should anything and it'll be grand.
Finding a clean one is the problem.

Most RX-7's are 1.7 tax, some have been successfully taxed as 1.3 after negotiations with vehicle reg office.

Are the Alfa Romeo 147's quick? They are all 1.6s and 5k would buy you a minter, possibly with leather and other extras.

Same could be said of FERRARI ! its all the one company. Alfa`s can be ok if they have a FULL service history and have been well minded otherwise avoid as they can be a bit soft and a money pit.

The RX7 is taxed as a 1.7 and they're putting out around 265bhp, they're turbo charged, and quick.

Ya, and VW is just a Hitler car. What's your point?
Punto's came in a 1.4 turbo also. Quick car too. Mitsubishi Mirage Mivec would be fairly quick.

    Had the lancer mivec
Was a great car and pretty quick easily take on the dohc civics not type r though
Mivecs in this country are ruined
    Same as most jap cars
Great cars that ended up in wrong hands

The odds are that the difference in motor tax is going to be one of the smaller costs for you to worry about.

For instance, I reckon you could easily pay a bit extra to insure a small, fast car than it would to insure one with a bigger engine which isn't considered as high a risk by the insurers.

Really? They're not as bulletproof as some might think, especially the 'cooking' cars, that said a corolla will go on forever just about but again it'll never be Italian or fun, guess it's the price you pay.

Yeah, any of the AE chassises will never be fun, sounds about right.

How about the KP60 Starlet that ripped out its real axle when new? Or the KP90 that deployed it's bags when driving normally?

    I'd be looking at this.......

2.0 though so not within the OPs criteria.

How that's not rotten I'll never know, the folks bought a 1985 Ritmo in 1987 and it started to rust after a year or so. By 1996 it was like a sieve.

Oh, thought it was on Classic tax!

How old does a car have to be before it gets classic/vintage tax?
