The faceless and invisible Head of 2FM should read Simon Garfield's book The Nation's Favourite - it recalls how Matthew Bannister incoming controller @BBC Radio one - went about 'shafting' all the ageing jocks. It recalls how he rolled out a Hot New young Schedule, and how he dealt with the initial reaction to a continuing drop in figures. But then it all happened for his new schedule and Radio one (One FM) took off with huge figures and became the most listened to young people's Radio station in the UK. Matthew embraced the Youth Culture at the right time - Pete Tong and Judge Jules arrived on the network. He introduced NewsBeat @ 5.45 - now a masterclass in how news should be presented - and dished up some exciting new intelligent and well informed DJays.

The boss of 2FM has inherited a lame duck - its not his fault that 2Fm sold out the young people and allowed Spin into its rightful place. Its not his fault that RTE does not support 2Fm and give it the budget to plan and interact with its Primary Audience - under 35's

I really believe that under current employment legislation 2FM cannot fire most of its DJ's without serious compensation. There is no other Radio station in the world in this precarious position.

I listened to it for a full day when I was out sick.

Hector - black pudding radio aimed at those with very little intellectual aspirations..

Tubridy - a complete contradiction to Hector - not enjoying his gig - more Radio 1 - does not have the humour or the cool intellect to be on a young peoples station.

Gogan - fair play to him - but its an insult to have him at 74 years of age on 2fm - he would be ideal for Weekend on Radio one - Saturday and Sunday mornings

    RickO

Tired and bored - very banal - out of touch with young Ireland - does he ever realise that a very high percentage of his listeners have a UNI degree and deserve more.

Leahy - Good Music - style a little nineties but at least tries hard to be different - and is quite bright and intelligent.

As regards the rest - with an average of only 18,000 listeners nationwide after 7pm - its obvious Management dont care.

Could one do a FOI on 2FM and what questions would you like answered?

I have to say PODboy's breakdown is fairly accurate as a young-in myself I agree that BBC Radio 1 definitely has the strongest line-up of talent in the world, and Ireland with humongous amounts of talent should wipe 2FM clean re-brand and change everything. Get a definite format, new presenters and some new imaging. Highly underused at 2FM if i'm honest considering all the budding producers out there it would give some people a chance. Also if they cut the existing presenters it will allow them to sort out a more reasonable wage for a presenter and give more money for new talent, branding, imaging, competitions and maybe a team dedicated to innovation/creativity at the station. They need creative people to come up with some great features and competitions, ones that will catch the stations attention.

I mean in all honesty there is only so many minutes Larry Gogan can do his just a minute quiz before it gets out right irritating, there is a HUGE gap in the market for a national youth station and 2FM have the opportunity to do it. It would be great if they could break away from the whole "RTE" side of things, I feel it restricts them in what they do. I think it makes them feel as if they can't push the boundaries of radio because they are the state broadcasters. Even though so are the BBC but they still manage to make great radio.

I forget his name, but I have to say, whoever was on last night in the 10pm hour (think he was covering for Jenny Greene) was excellent. Just playing some good tunes and not arsing around. 2FM really shines late at night tbh with it's dance music stuff. Just a shame everything else is so poor.

You guys are all shouting about 'making it younger - making it fresh - throw out the dead wood'

Lads... there is NO money in youth radio in Ireland. The younger demo's 15 -24's don't have money to spend. The vast majority of 25+ don't have jobs & a huge chunk of these demos have immigrated.

I read that 40% of 22 - 40 years old in Ireland are gone, no longer in the market.

Why do you think 2fm is trying to be TodayFM ? Because of the business TodayFM do in turnover. They crush 2fm in the revenue stakes.

2FM is a station I grew up with. It was 'The Big Station' the holy grail & the only show in town.

If you take your eye off the brand, if you don't watch the competitors if you don't scoop up the talent ... you're doomed.

    This is what has happened.

John Mac in 2FM is not to blame as such. 2FM's bad performance is tinged with bad luck also. Gerry died and that pulled the rug under mid mornings. They NEVER have got breakfast right since Ian left - while all of this is happening Gift Grub becomes the biggest item on breakfast radio, D'arcy is growing a whole new generation of mid morning listeners, Foley is doing his thing on afternoons and Matt Cooper had drive nailed.

Answer this ... can you honestly say that there is a 2FM presenter that makes you run to the radio, that makes you feel that you can not miss this show? That is constantly re-inventing their shift & doing brilliant memorable radio ?

    This is what's missing.

IF I had 2FM this is what I would do with it.

6-9 AM Foley, JP & Ann Gleeson

9 -12 Sean Moncrieff with a solid crew ( not ' so solid crew' that would just be daft)

    12- 2 The KC show

    2- 5 Dermot & Dave

5 -7 Dara O Briain doing a brilliant music & guest driven drive.

7- 10 Brian & Dara ( Dara O' Brian ? ) from Spin doing what they do now.

10 -1 Adrian Kennedy ( Yeah ... trashy at times ... but look at the figures over the last 10 years)

Great post, only problem is the bit I have highlighted. 2FM have amazing studios and facilities and fork out massive money on presenters, they have a huge financial backing from the RTE. If they actually did some of the things you mention here and dropped some of the big names on the station and replaced them with people more in tune with what 2fm should be aiming at they could cut cost's and increase listnership, its just a wasteland of names from around RTE sitting there, getting paid to do a job that frankly no one wants them to do. They need to make a choice and decide what they are, if they don't want the youth audience then they should give up the license for someone that is willing to put the effort in and try and become a different station.

Great idea for 2fm, but what music would you choose to play and why the need for so many shows, they could do longer shifts surely (like every other station in the country).

Poor old, Larry Gogan needs to retire, do the execs in 2fm not realise that the listeners go down by about 20,000 when Larry goes on and go back up when he finishes... He's a great presenter, but 2fm just isn't the place for him at the moment.

Anyone else feel as if RTE radio personalities kind of look down on the rest of the Irish radio platform? I mean I always hear that cliche line of "Ireland is swimming in talent, great up and coming dancers, singers, musicians" and dare I say it DJ's? I feel as if RTE promote all the cultural talent through both TV and Radio but they still hold the holy grail if you will over peoples heads? I'm talking on the younger side of the presenter platform more radio wise, will they ever give younger generation a chance? I'm talking SPIN, 104, Beat, Phantom etc. all these stations have great on air talent on them only looking for the opportunity to showcase that talent to the nation.

Will it always be that you've gotta be in a certain age bracket before you can join the station?
